The company sold off its utility-scale solar business, spun off its solar panel manufacturing business, and is in the process of finding a buyer or other alternative for its commercial solar business. What's left is the residential solar installation business that's become one of the most valuable parts of the solar energy market. And you can see below that it's treated investors very well.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/153edab316184e1b7e084406d0753f3e\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"449\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>SPWR DATA BY YCHARTS</span></p>\n<p>I'm thankful that SunPower found a path to success on the market and can&nbsp;now focus on becoming a growth stock. The company has built the infrastructure to sell, design, install, and finance residential solar projects at scale, which is what the market is rewarding today. And it made a great deal in selling its inverter business to Enphase Energy for stock that ultimately saved the company.</p>\n<p>The next few years will be important for SunPower's long-term prospects. If it can grow in residential solar and improve profitability along the way the stock could continue to rise. But solar installation has been a competitive business and companies have risen and fallen over the last decade. What I think will separate SunPower long-term is the ability to combine high-quality solar installations with energy storage and monitoring features. As all of these energy products come together, SunPower will keep giving us new energy products to be thankful for.</p>\n<p><b>An investment for the planet</b></p>\n<p><b>Howard Smith(Enphase Energy):</b>I first heard of Enphase Energy seven years ago, when I was investigating&nbsp;adding solar panels&nbsp;to my roof. I didn't invest in the company, or even consider it at the time. It was just a name on the equipment controlling and monitoring the solar power coming into my home after I made the investment. Seven years later that investment in the solar panel system has about paid for itself -- including tax and other incentives -- and I wish I had bought Enphase stock more than 2,000% ago.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8376c88917368014c7189a358b113d3e\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"387\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>ENPH DATA BY YCHARTS</span></p>\n<p>My equipment may be the company's first-generation microinverter and related technologies, but Enphase recently released the eighth-generation microinverter system. The IQ8 is an all-in-one system that the company says is \"capable of forming a microgrid during a power outage using only sunlight, providing backup power even without a battery.\" While it is currently only available in North America, that will change soon as Enphase has been working to grow globally.</p>\n<p>Enphase recently launched its battery storage system in Belgium and has also just expanded into Brazil and Italy. And the company is not just growing geographically, it is also adding to its addressable market base. Enphase just announced plans to acquire ClipperCreek, an electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions company.</p>\n<p>Enphase plans to integrate that technology into its product base giving its global distributors and installers another product to offer alongside its solar and battery technology systems. The move into the EV sector also gives Enphase a path \"to enable bi-directional charging capability for vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-grid applications.\"</p>\n<p>Investors who have held Enphase stock through its explosive growth are likely thankful they have remained patient. But the stock isn't the only part of Enphase to be thankful for this year. Enphase's products can provide nice returns on investment in and of themselves, while supporting the conversion to renewable energy that the entire planet can be thankful for as well.</p>\n<p><b>Good companies usually turn into good stocks, too</b></p>\n<p><b>Daniel Foelber&nbsp;(Lucid Group):</b>From its&nbsp;pre-merger stint with Churchill Capital IV, to its&nbsp;merger in July, to reaching&nbsp;deliveries in late October, Lucid has given investors a wild, volatile, and quite often stressful experience in 2021. But so far this year, Lucid is the best-performing automaker in the world -- giving investors who have stayed the course a fourfold return.</p>\n<p>In just a year, Lucid has transformed itself from an unproven company to a company with some of the&nbsp;best technology in the entire electric vehicle (EV) industry.</p>\n<p>The short-term outlook looks impressive. Its balance sheet is&nbsp;rich with cash, its manufacturing plant has enough capacity to meet 2022 demand, reservations are now over 17,000, and it is on track to build 20&nbsp;sales and service centers&nbsp;throughout the U.S. and Canada before year-end.</p>\n<p>The medium-term outlook looks excellent as well. In 2022,the company expects to be producing four versions of the Lucid Air sedan&nbsp;at price points ranging from $77,400 to $169,000. It's also further growing its manufacturing capacity to 50,000 units by 2022 so it can handle production of the Air and Gravity SUV in 2023.</p>\n<p>Over the long term, Lucid expects to expand into Saudi Arabia and China, its second- and third-largest markets by demand. By 2026, it expects to deliver over 250,000 units.&nbsp;It also plans to grow its manufacturing capacity to 500,000 units by the end of the decade.</p>\n<p>Over the last three months, share prices of Lucid have dipped as low as $16.12 per share and as high as $57.44 a share. To say it has been a rocky road would be an understatement. Yet despite the volatility, long-term investors hope that Lucid's growth story is maybe only in the first or second inning. The lesson here is that winning technology and a competent management team able to&nbsp;deliver on promisesis what makes a great company. As long as Lucid continues to capture market share and charts a path toward profitability, investors are likely to be thankful for years to come.</p>\n<p><b>A lot to be thankful for</b></p>\n<p>Not only are these companies building the infrastructure to reduce emissions and provide clean energy for the world, they're giving investors market-beating returns. Some employees and investors have called for him to resign in the wake of&nbsp;a Wall Street Journal investigation&nbsp;into his handling of sexual-misconduct allegations and multiple regulatory probes into the company’s culture.</p>\n<p>A company spokeswoman didn’t respond to requests for comment.</p>\n<p>Shares of Activision have fallen more than 14% since the Journal article published online Nov. 16, and about 30% since the first of the regulatory investigations into the company’s culture was made public in late July.</p>\n<p>The Journal article, citing interviews and internal documents, described how Mr. Kotick knew of sexual misconduct allegations across the company, including rapes, and didn’t report them to the company’s board of directors. Chairman Brian Kelly was part of the team that acquired the assets of the company that became Activision Blizzard in 1991. Sweetgreen joins&nbsp;electric-truck makerRivian AutomotiveInc.,sneaker makerAllbirdsInc.and software makerBrazeInc.in producing big gains on their first day of trading this month.</p>\n<p>Sweetgreen co-founder and Chief Executive Jonathan Neman said Thursday that Sweetgreen intends to use much of the new investment to open new U.S. locations. “The major focus is continuing to expand our footprint into as many communities as possible,” he said in an interview.</p>\n<p>Founded in 2007 by three 22-year-olds, Sweetgreen is a fast-food restaurant brand with 140 restaurants across 13 states and Washington, D.C. The company has built a supply chain around more than 200 domestic food partners, such as bakers and farmers, to source its ingredients.</p>\n<p>The company is coming public as the competitive restaurant industry continues to feel the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic has rattled supply chains, raised labor and product costs, and kept people out of offices, akey source of trafficat Sweetgreen’s urban locations during lunch hours.</p>\n<p>Sweetgreen’s profit margins and average sales per restaurant took a hit during the pandemic, the company’s pre-IPO filing showed. The chain reported a restaurant-level profit margin of 12% this year through Sept. 26, down from 16% in 2019.</p>\n<p>Mr. Neman said Sweetgreen is adding more stores in suburban areas, which have generally done better during the pandemic as more people worked from home. The company has invested in technology to help with its to-go and online sales.</p>\n<p>“We really used the crisis in a lot of ways to reset,” he said.</p>\n<p>Sweetgreen plans to open at least 30 company-owned restaurants in the U.S. this year, and roughly double its total number of locations over the next three to five years, it said in the filing.</p>\n<p>Mr. Neman and co-founder Nathaniel Ru served as co-chief executives from 2009 through December 2017, when Mr. Neman took the helm solely. Mr. Ru serves aschief brand officer, while its third co-founder, Nicolas Jammet, is the company’s chief concept officer.</p>\n<p>Since the beginning of this year through to Sept. 26, Sweetgreen has generated revenue of $243.4 million. In comparison, the company had revenue of $274.2 million in 2019 and $220.6 million in 2020, hurt by pandemic-related disruptions.</p>\n<p>So far this year, the company posted a net loss of $87 million. In 2020, the company had a loss of $141.6 million.</p>\n<p>For many restaurants during the pandemic, digital orders have become a key source of revenue and an important way to interact with customers. From the beginning of 2021 through to Sept. 26, Sweetgreen’s total digital revenue was 68% of its total revenue.</p>\n<p>Sales through its owned digital channels represented 43% and 56% of revenue in 2019 and 2020, increasing to 50% and 75%, respectively, when including orders placed through third-party delivery apps.</p>\n<p>The stock opened Thursday at $52, above its better-than-expected initial-public-offering price of $28.</p>\n<p>Sweetgreen is expected to get $364 million in proceeds from its IPO. The company plans to spend the money raised on general corporate purposes, which include working capital, operating expenses and capital expenditures, as well as developing the technology acquired in its recent acquisition of robotic-powered fast-food restaurant, Spyce Food Co.</p>\n<p>It said it might also use a portion to buy other complementary businesses or technologies, adding that it doesn’t currently have any targets.</p>\n<p>In mid-September of 2019, Sweetgreen got an injection of $150 million from investors, valuing it at the time of that funding round at $1.6 billion.</p>\n<p>The top three stockholders of the company are entities affiliated with Fidelity Investments Inc.,T. Rowe Priceand Revolution Growth, respectively holding 13.4%, 10.6% and 7.8% before the IPO.</p>\n<p>Mr. Neman has a 2.6% stake but has 22.8% of the shareholders’ total voting power. Sweetgreen joins electric-truck makerRivian AutomotiveInc.,sneaker makerAllbirdsInc.and software makerBrazeInc.in producing big gains on their first day of trading this month.\nSweetgreen co-founder and Chief Executive Jonathan Neman said Thursday that Sweetgreen intends to use much of the new investment to open new U.S. locations. “The major focus is continuing to expand our footprint into as many communities as possible,” he said in an interview.\nFounded in 2007 by three 22-year-olds, Sweetgreen is a fast-food restaurant brand with 140 restaurants across 13 states and Washington, D.C. The company has built a supply chain around more than 200 domestic food partners, such as bakers and farmers, to source its ingredients.\nThe company is coming public as the competitive restaurant industry continues to feel the disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic has rattled supply chains, raised labor and product costs, and kept people out of offices, akey source of trafficat Sweetgreen’s urban locations during lunch hours.\nSweetgreen’s profit margins and average sales per restaurant took a hit during the pandemic, the company’s pre-IPO filing showed. The chain reported a restaurant-level profit margin of 12% this year through Sept. 26, down from 16% in 2019.\nMr. Neman said Sweetgreen is adding more stores in suburban areas, which have generally done better during the pandemic as more people worked from home. The company has invested in technology to help with its to-go and online sales.\n“We really used the crisis in a lot of ways to reset,” he said.\nSweetgreen plans to open at least 30 company-owned restaurants in the U.S. this year, and roughly double its total number of locations over the next three to five years, it said in the filing.\nMr. Neman and co-founder Nathaniel Ru served as co-chief executives from 2009 through December 2017, when Mr. Neman took the helm solely. Consumer staples and utilities were the biggest gainers among 11 S&P 500 sectors, while consumer discretionary and tech weighed on the broader market, falling 1.2% and 0.9%, respectively.Shares of General Motors climbed nearly 6.4% after the company said it expects its results for the first half of 2021 to be “significantly better” than its prior guidance.On the data front, private job growth for May accelerated at its fastest pace in nearly a year as companies hired nearly a million workers, according to a report Thursday from payroll processing firm ADP.Total hires came to 978,000 for the month, a big jump from April’s 654,000 and the largest gain since June 2020. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been looking for 680,000.Meanwhile,first-time claims for unemployment benefitsfor the week ended May 29 totaled 385,000, versus a Dow Jones estimate of 393,000. It also marked the first time that jobless claims fell below 400,000 since the early days of the pandemic.“With ADP knocking it out of the park, and jobless claims breaking that 400k barrier—a pandemic low—all eyes will be on the larger jobs picture tomorrow,” said Mike Loewengart, a managing director at E-Trade. “With seemingly all systems go on the jobs front, the economy is flashing some very real signs that this isn’t just a comeback—expansion mode could be on the horizon.”The market may be on hold before the release of the jobs report Friday, which is likely to show an additional 671,000 nonfarm payrolls in May, according to economists polled by Dow Jones. Or is this historically cyclical sector up to its old tricks and headed into a sustained downtrend that will rip your face off.</p>\n<p>A lot depends on your timeline but if you like to own stocks for years rather than rent them for days, the group is a buy. The chief reason: “It’s different this time.”</p>\n<p>Those are admittedly among the scariest words in investing. But the chip sector has changed so much it really is different now – in ways that suggest it is less likely to crush you.</p>\n<p>You’d be a fool to think there are no risks. I’ll go over those. But first, here are the three main reasons why the group is “safer” now – and six names favored by the half-dozen sector experts I’ve talked with over the past several days.</p>\n<p><b>1. The wicked witch of cyclicality is dead</b></p>\n<p>“Demand in the chip sector was always boom and bust, driven by product cycles,” says David Winborne, a portfolio manager at Impax Asset Management. “<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/FBNC\">First</a> PCs, then servers, then phones.” But now demand for chips has broadened across the economy so the secular growth story is more predictable, he says.</p>\n<p><a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/JE\">Just</a> look around you. Because of the increased “digitalization” of our lives and work, there’s greater diversity of end market demand from all angles. Think remote office services like <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/ZM\">Zoom</a>, online shopping, cloud services, electric vehicles, 5G phones, smart factories, big data computing and even washing machines, points out Hendi Susanto, a portfolio manager and tech analyst at Gabelli Funds who is bullish on the group.</p>\n<p>“There is no aspect of the modern digital economy that can function without semiconductors,” says Motley Fool chip sector analyst John Rotonti. “That means more chips going into everything. The long-term demand is there.”</p>\n<p>He’s not kidding. Chip sector revenue will double by 2030 to $1 trillion from $465 billion in 2020, predicts William&nbsp;Blair&nbsp;analyst Greg Scolaro.</p>\n<p>All of this means the widespread supply shortages you’ve been hearing about “likely won’t be cured until sometime late next year,” says <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/BAC\">Bank of America</a> chip sector analyst Vivek Arya. “That’s not just our view, but <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> confirmed by a majority of large customers.”</p>\n<p><b>2. The players have consolidated</b></p>\n<p>All up and down the production chain, from design through the various types of equipment producers to manufacturing, industry players have consolidated down into what Rotonti calls “earned” duopolies or monopolies.</p>\n<p>In chip design software, you have Cadence Design Systems&nbsp;and Synopsys.In production equipment, companies dominate specialized niches like ASML&nbsp;in extreme ultraviolet lithography&nbsp;(EUV). Manufacturing is dominated by Taiwan Semiconductor&nbsp;and Samsung Electronics.</p>\n<p>These companies earned their niche or duopoly status by being the best at what they do. This makes them interesting for investors. The consolidation also means players behave more rationally in terms of pricing and production capacity, says Rotonti.</p>\n<p><b>3. Meanwhile chip sales growth continued. Normally the two follow the same trend, points out Karazeris, who tracks this indicator at Thrivent. He chalks the divergence up to inventory building which is less sustainable than true end-market demand.
