Over the past decade, Apple’s shares outstanding have declined by 10 billion units to 16.7 billion. Share count is the denominator in EPS (earnings per share) and EPS is the denominator in price-to-earnings. Therefore, buybacks alone have probably been responsible for a good chunk of Apple stock’s climb in the past several years.</p>\n<p>At the current stock price of $165 apiece, Apple can afford to retire around 435 million more shares with its current net cash balance, or barely 3% of the float. The target presents an 18% increase from Apple’s (ticker: AAPL) $161.84 closing price on Friday. The stock was up 1.2% to $163.73 in premarket trading Monday.</p>\n<p>Of the 42 analysts covering the stock surveyed by FactSet, 32 have it at a Buy or Overweight rating, nine rated it at Hold, and one rated it Underweight.</p>\n<p>“While AAPL is expensive by historical valuations, we find AAPL attractive relative to other mega-caps,” Nispel wrote on Monday.</p>\n<p>The analyst outlined three main reasons for his bullish take. Nispel doesn’t believe iPhone unit sales have peaked, with the 5G upgrade cycle potentially pushing Apple past its current peak; he believes the company has managed to increase its product breadth to reduce reliability on iPhone sales; and he foresees services to grow at rates multiple times faster than user growth.</p>\n<p>The analyst forecasts Apple to have 1.09 billion active iPhones and 1.8 billion active installed devices by the end of the first quarter of the 2022 fiscal year. This presents a 7% and 8% year-over-year increase, respectively.</p>\n<p>“This shows a healthy growing user base where Apple iPhone market share is low relative to key geographies outside the United States,” Nispel wrote. “As the installed base grows, a larger base can support more sales on lower upgrade rates.”</p>\n<p>Apple’s international segment is likely to grow faster in the coming years as other countries adapt to 5G, prompting a wave of upgrades to compatible hardware, Nispel wrote. He estimates every 1% increase in 5G upgrade rates could drive an incremental 11 million iPhone unit sales.</p>\n<p>As hardware adoption grows, so does Apple’s services business. The segment, which includes services such as Apple TV+, Music, News+, AppleCare, Advertising, and Cloud, has grown 27% in the 2021 fiscal year. All three finished near their lows of the day.</p>\n<p>Fed governors have been dropping hints in recent weeks that the beginning of the end of the central bank’s bond buying was nearing, and the minutes confirmed that&nbsp;taperingis at hand. “Most participants noted that …it could be appropriate to start reducing the pace of asset purchases this year,” the minutes read.</p>\n<p>The assessment comes as&nbsp;the economy has recovered quickly, and reflects that the Fed is now focused on when—and how quickly—to remove support from the economy.</p>\n<p>The selloff was broad. About 83% of S&amp;P 500 stocks fell on the day, according to FactSet. This dynamics often reflects concern about how the market will perform without the Fed there to support it.</p>\n<p>Now, it’s just a question of when tapering will begin. It’ “is going to be September or December,” said Dave Wagner, portfolio manager and analyst at Aptus Capital Advisors. “Everyone is focusing on Jackson Hole in my opinion,” he continued, referring to the conclave of central bankers that occurs later this month in Jackson Hole, Wyo.</p>\n<p>Strangely, the bond market didn’t react all that much, with the 10-year Treasury yield closing at 1.27%, where it hovered for most of the day. people said. The new retail spaces will be around 30,000 square feet, smaller than most department stores, which typically occupy about 100,000 square feet, and will offer items from top consumer brands. The Amazon stores will dwarf many of the company’s other physical retail spaces and will have a footprint similar to scaled-down formats that Bloomingdale’s Inc.,Nordstrom&nbsp;Inc.&nbsp;and other department-store chains have begun opening, the people said.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/d67f9de0074029db2427cb052caf03fc\" tg-width=\"1050\" tg-height=\"700\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Chains including J.C. The plans aren’t yet final and could change, these people said.</p>\n<p>Amazon’s plans represent an evolution in the company’s efforts to move into bricks-and-mortar retail after years of taking market share from big-box operators—moves that helped to push many into bankruptcy. The company’s growth in online shopping helped accelerate the fall of mall operators and other once-potent physical-store empires.Amazon is now the largest seller&nbsp;of clothing in the U.S., surpassing&nbsp;Walmart&nbsp;Inc.,according to Wells Fargo &amp; Co.</p>\n<p>Founded in 1994 as an online bookseller, Amazon has gradually gained a foothold in physical retail through the opening of book stores,grocery outlets&nbsp;and other physical spaces. The company bought the grocer Whole Foods Market in 2017.</p>\n<p>Amazon is pushing into an area that has struggled for decades. Department stores were once big, exciting places to shop, where consumers could find everything from toaster ovens to evening gowns under one roof. But they have lost out to discounters, fast-fashion retailers and online players. A generation ago, department stores comprised 10% of retail sales, excluding automobiles, gas and restaurants, according to estimates by the consulting firm Customer Growth Partners. So far this year, they account for less than 1%.</p>\n<p>Their troubles worsened last year during the depths of the Covid-19 pandemic, when J.C. Penney, Neiman Marcus Group Inc., Lord &amp; Taylor and Stage Stores Inc.&nbsp;filed for bankruptcy. J.C. Penney and Neiman Marcus emerged from court protection under new owners. Lord &amp; Taylor now sells only online, and Stage Stores liquidated.</p>\n<p>Analysts and industry executives aren’t counting department stores out just yet. Chains including&nbsp;Macy’s&nbsp;Inc.&nbsp;and&nbsp;Kohl’s&nbsp;Corp.&nbsp;reported strong sales Thursday as shoppers restocked their closets after reducing clothing purchases last year. That would be particularly beneficial in apparel, which can often be a guessing game for customers shopping online because of size and fit concerns. It would also give customers even more instant gratification than the quick shipping offered by Amazon for online purchases.</p>\n<p>Amazon executives have felt that bricks-and-mortar stores would enable better engagement with customers and provide a showcase for its devices and other products to shoppers who otherwise might not have tried them, a person familiar with the matter said. Year-over-year sales for the segment grew 11% during the second quarter this year.</p>\n<p>The company has in recent years invested more in building out its fashion business and giving shoppers increased alternatives regarding the purchase of apparel.Amazon has had a tougher time&nbsp;breaking into high-end fashion. Although Oscar de la Renta began selling cocktail dresses on Amazon’s website last year, few other luxury brands have followed.</p>\n<p>Over the years, Amazon has used its clout to expand into new markets, disrupting some industries and gaining strength in many others, including entertainment, groceries, healthcare and more. While the extent to which its physical-retail ambitions will grow isn’t clear, the company has been steadily adding stores for years.</p>\n<p>Amazon opened&nbsp;its first physical store in 2015, a bookstore in Seattle. It tried to set the stores apart from competitors by providing discounts to Amazon Prime customers, offering its own devices for testing and sale, and creating a highly curated selection of books based on a ratings system.</p>\n<p>Amazon now operates more than 20 bookstores throughout the country, as well as more than two dozen Amazon 4-star stores, outlets that sell gadgets from electronics to kitchen products. The 4-star stores have typically been around 4,000 square feet. Two years ago, the company said&nbsp;it would close many “pop-up” stores&nbsp;it had opened in malls. The small shops showcased such devices as smart speakers, tablets and Kindle e-readers.</p>\n<p>The company’s technological innovations have been particularly present in its line of grocery stores, which began with its purchase of Whole Foods. Those now include its cashierless Amazon Go convenience stores in Chicago, New York, San Francisco and Seattle and its more conventional Amazon Fresh stores across several states. The analyst has called the upcoming device launch a “12S cycle”, arguing that the best of Apple’s iPhone upgrade wave,the so-called 5G super cycle, has been left in the rearview mirror.</p>\n<p>New Street subscribes to the view that the strong iPhone 12 cycle has pulled forward smartphone sales, leaving a gap in demand going forward. Interestingly, this is exactly the&nbsp;opposite opinion of bullish Wedbush analyst Dan Ives, who said the following during an interview with the Apple Maven:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “What the Street underestimates is how massive and elongated this super cycle is. […] 5G does not get fully embraced for the next two or three years, until the networks are built out. In China [where the 5G infrastructure is further ahead], the iPhone 12, especially the larger Pro versions, really sold extremely well.”\n</blockquote>\n<p>Still on the iPhone, Mr. Ferragu laid out his expectations for 2022 back in April (I am unaware of revisions since then). He believes that iPhone shipments will reach 190 million units, suggesting segment revenues of around $150 billion – a modest annual increase of 5% from COVID-19 levels.</p>\n<p><b>Could AAPL sink 40%?</b></p>\n<p>Now, let’s put pen to paper. For Apple stock to be valued at $90 apiece, one of two things would need to happen: either financial performance would need to lag consensus expectations, or valuations would need to contract (or a combination of both).</p>\n<p>On results,Wall Street currently sees&nbsp;fiscal 2022 EPS landing at $5.63, roughly flat against a 2021 that has been impressive so far. For AAPL to drop 40% in price, therefore, next-year earnings would need to miss consensus substantially, by at least a couple of dollars. I find this highly unlikely.</p>\n<p>On valuations, AAPL currently trades at a fiscal 2021 earnings multiple of 27 times. Assuming consensus-matching results in the future, this multiple would need to drop to about 16 times for AAPL shares to sink to $90. The stock’s forward P/E has not been this low in years.</p>\n<p><b>The Apple Maven’s take</b></p>\n<p>I find it very improbable, if not virtually impossible, for Apple to ever be valued at $90 per share again.
