AbbVie</p>\n<p>AbbVie makes for an ideal buy-and-forget investment. The&nbsp;healthcare stock&nbsp;yields an impressive 4.8% right now -- well above the&nbsp;<b>S&amp;P 500</b>average of just 1.4%. And the dividend is well supported; in the past 12 months, the company has generated free cash flow of $21.7 billion, more than double the $9 billion in dividends it paid out during that time.</p>\n<p>When the company released its latest quarterly earnings results on Oct. 29, it reported sales of $14.3 billion, 11% higher than the year-ago period. The company also raised its guidance for a third time in 2021, anticipating that its adjusted diluted earnings per share will come in between $12.63 and $12.67 for the full year. That's well above the $5.64 in dividends that the company is paying out annually per share. TheDividend Aristocratalso raised its dividend by 8.5% in a hike that will come into effect next year.</p>\n<p>While investors may be worried about the company's expiring patent on rhe&nbsp;umatoid arthritis drug Humira, AbbVie's management anticipates that newer drugs like Skyrizi and Rinvoq will generate long-term growth and make up for the inevitable decline in Humira's sales. Both drugs still have a long way to go. In just the latest quarter, they achieved combined sales of $1.2 billion in sales while Humira brought in more than $5.4 billion.</p>\n<p>CEO Richard Gonzalez said, \"What we're basically trying to accomplish with the company is build a set of assets that could ultimately significantly replace Humira in the marketplace and be superior to Humira.\"</p>\n<p>Even if there's a dip in profitability, AbbVie has plenty of room to support its dividend. And with other pharma stocks like&nbsp;<b>Pfizer</b>,<b>Merck</b>, and&nbsp;<b>Amgen</b>&nbsp;trading at forward&nbsp;price-to-earnings(P/E) multiples of more than 12, AbbVie's multiple of nine makes the stock look like a bargain buy.</p>\n<p>2. ViacomCBS</p>\n<p>Media and entertainment company ViacomCBS pays a dividend that currently yields right around 3% per year. While it's not as high as AbbVie's payout, the stock could more than make up for that with some possibly stronger gains. Viacom currently trades at a forward P/E of less than nine, which is dirt cheap as streaming stocks&nbsp;<b>WaltDisney</b>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<b>Netflix</b>&nbsp;trade at multiples of 35 and 62, respectively.</p>\n<p>One of the reasons investors aren't as bullish on ViacomCBS is that it still isn't a big rival to those streaming giants. At 47 million global streaming subscribers across its services (including Paramount+), ViacomCBS is nowhere near Netflix's tally of 214 million and has a long way to go in catching up to Disney at over 118 million.</p>\n<p>Plus, ViacomCBS's streaming service isn't even the biggest part of its business. In the latest quarter, its advertising, affiliate, and licensing segments together contributed the vast majority of the company's revenue -- about $5.5 billion in all. However, this latest quarter marked the first time that its global streaming revenue surpassed $1 billion. And with revenue growth of 72% over the year-ago period, streaming is by far the company's fastest-growing segment.</p>\n<p>Although it may not be as popular as its bigger-name rivals, ViacomCBS is posting some strong results of late and it could be an&nbsp;attractive contrarian betto take. But the shares have surged 50% since the company’s last earnings call, Bryson said, and were now trading at a multiple of around 55x Wedbush’s 2024 estimates.</p>\n<p>This means that the analysts would have to lift their multiple to around 67x to justify an Outperform rating, or, alternatively, double their sales growth assumptions for the next few years to continue to use a 40x multiple.</p>\n<p>“While we remain very bullish on both Nvidia’s near-term prospects and longer-term opportunities (particularly around AI), we simply find ourselves unable to justify lifting our multiple to levels that would continue to justify an Outperform,” Bryson said. “We are stepping to the sidelines on Nvidia with our new Neutral rating.”</p>\n<p>Nvidia—which will report earnings next Wednesday—is primarily a maker of graphics processing units (GPUs), which were originally designed for applications in gaming and film. While investors often want management to remain disciplined on when and how it spends the money, the swelling cash pile is “somewhat disappointing,” according to Edward Jones analyst Jim Shanahan.</p>\n<p>“Buybacks were fine, but cash balances increased again,” Shanahan said. “Cash is now approaching $150 billion. That certainly was unexpected earlier this calendar year, I would have thought they would have been able to manage that lower with a combination of investments, acquisitions and buybacks.”</p>\n<p>The Omaha, Nebraska-based business, which reported third-quarter earnings Saturday, posted an 18% gain in operating profit during that period, buoyed by record railroad earnings and strong results from its energy businesses. Questions have been raised as to why members of the policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), with immense power to move markets, would ever be allowed to personally profit on trades.</p>\n<p>“No <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> is happy,” Powell told the press on Sept. 22. “No one on the FOMC is happy to be in this situation, to be having these questions raised. It's something we take very, very seriously.”</p>\n<p>Peter Conti-Brown, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania who has written about Fed independence, told Yahoo Finance that the entire situation is a “calamity and a scandal” for the Fed.</p>\n<p>“I think central bankers should never be under a cloud of suspicion that they’re advocating for policies that will enrich them,” Conti-Brown said, adding that he would support a wholesale ban on any senior Fed official holding any individual stocks.</p>\n<p>San Francisco President Mary Daly, whose financial disclosures showed no individual stock holdings, told reporters Sept. 29 that she acknowledges the American public’s concern that the Fed’s existing ethics rules are “not sufficient.”</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/041dbdec77d0aa8b865a34c363c30aba\" tg-width=\"705\" tg-height=\"504\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Boston Fed President Eric Rosengren (left) and Dallas Fed President Robert Kaplan (right) announced early retirements. The Boston Fed said the trades were not done via a blind trust and were “consistent” with ethics rules.</p>\n<p><b>September 9, 2021:</b>Federal Reserve Banks of Boston and Dallas simultaneously issue statements with nearly identical language, both noting that their financial transactions complied with the Fed’s ethics rules. The statements said both presidents would dump their holdings by Sept. 30 (with reinvestment into diversified index funds or cash savings), alongside a promise that they would not be active in those accounts as long as they remained presidents.</p>\n<p><b>September 15, 2021:</b>Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.)writes to all 12 Federal Reserve banksasking them to, within 60 days, impose a ban on the ownership and trading of individual stocks by senior officials.</p>\n<p><b>September 16, 2021:</b>Federal Reserve Board issues a statement via a spokesperson noting that Powell directed Board staff the week prior to “take a fresh and comprehensive look at the ethics rules around financial holdings and activities by senior Fed officials.” Fed notes that its rules on personal financial practices are “stricter than those that apply to Congress.”</p>\n<p><b>September 22, 2021:</b>Powellfields questions from the press, insisting he was not aware of the trading until after both presidents had filed disclosures (which are filed on an annual basis). Powell reiterates the Fed's existing restrictions, such as not being able to trade immediately before and during a policy-setting meeting. As the heads of two of the Fed's network of 12 reserve banks, both were instrumental in engineering the Fed’s response to the financial fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic.\nRosengren and Kaplan would promise not to do any more trading during their tenure as senior Fed officials, but would later announce early retirements as the public fallout expanded.\nFed Vice Chairman Richard Clarida would also likely catch scrutiny for rotating millions of dollars out of bond fund and into stock funds in February 2020— right before the Fed started slashing interest rates.\nAt the direction of Fed Chairman Jerome Powell, the Federal Reserve Board (the system's headquarters in Washington) is now in the process of a system-wide review regarding its ethics practices. Questions have been raised as to why members of the policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), with immense power to move markets, would ever be allowed to personally profit on trades.\n“No one is happy,” Powell told the press on Sept. 22. “No one on the FOMC is happy to be in this situation, to be having these questions raised. Traders have been buying Apple stock after its September correction, but earnings will decide the tug-of-war between Apple bulls and Apple bears.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/75383021ae523c74b5fd4b0902352205\" tg-width=\"635\" tg-height=\"449\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Data by YCharts</span></p>\n<p>Key issues on deck:</p>\n<ul>\n <li>Will the global supply chain crisis finally drag Apple down with it? The 2020 holiday season (Apple's FY '21) was the best holiday season ever for Apple, with demand boosted by stimulus and limited issues with supply. 2021 looks ominous, with now over 100 ships&nbsp;waiting to unload&nbsp;in the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, while the Chinese energy crisis&nbsp;imposes blackouts&nbsp;on some Apple suppliers. I'm not seeing many signs of progress with inflation and shortages, especially with the price of oil rising higher every single week.</li>\n <li>Will consumer demand in the United States and Europe remain strong with stimulus unwinding? With multiple rounds of $1,200 stimulus checks and consumers stuck at home, iPhone revenue hit a record after the pandemic. Now, with $4 gas in many areas of the US, rising food prices, and stimulus spent and gone, those prior year comps could start to look hard to match. This said–I'd expect iPhone demand to remain relatively strong–which only matters if Apple can supply it.</li>\n <li>As Apple's valuation has risen, services growth is the key to Apple's business growing into its nearly $2.5 trillion valuation. Investors are sure to watch for indications to services can keep growing at a rapid rate, and are likely to be wary of any indications that competition and/or antitrust action could slow growth.</li>\n</ul>\n<p><b>Is Apple Impacted By The Supply Chain Crisis?</b></p>\n<p>Apple is known for having a world-class supply chain. Apple's massive scale means that Apple historically tells suppliers to jump, and suppliers ask \"how high?\" As such, Apple saw far fewer disruptions early in the pandemic than companies with less logistical expertise/firepower (e.g. US automakers). As such, AAPL stock has had a banner FY 2021 and is expected to earn an all-time high of $5.58 per share for the year.</p>\n<p>With the supply chain situation continuing to deteriorate in the United States, Bloomberg has recently reported that Apple's&nbsp;luck may be coming to an end.</p>\n<p>From Bloomberg:</p>\n<blockquote>\n Apple had expected to produce 90 million new iPhone models this year, but is now telling manufacturing partners that the total will be lower because Broadcom Inc. and Texas Instruments Inc. are struggling to deliver enough components, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the situation is private.\n</blockquote>\n<p>Apple is now expected to cut production by&nbsp;as many as 10 million iPhones&nbsp;due to chip shortages. Recent reporting shows that if you order an iPhone 13 today, Apple estimates that they can get it to you by&nbsp;early December. But with over 100 ships piled up off the coast of California, I think Apple, like many manufacturers, is being optimistic about shipping dates. Shortages will likely be worse on the East Coast due to the goods having to cross the country through jams at West Coast railyards and trucking warehouses as well.</p>\n<p><b>Los Angeles Ports: 2021</b></p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/01d1d18f0f9af9b0905171a36b7c30a0\" tg-width=\"1100\" tg-height=\"618\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"></p>\n<p><b>Los Angeles Ports: 2019</b></p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/3e0db19f9dc28174f19d477e66de294e\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"358\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Source: CNN</span></p>\n<p>The port congestion may soon ease, but not for the reason Corporate America hopes. China is facing severe shortages of energy commodities going into winter, and&nbsp;they're already curtailing manufacturing, which has already impacted Apple. Morgan Stanley&nbsp;came out with a note&nbsp;that said they think Apple will gain market share from this because competitors will have even worse problems with the supply chain. I'd push back on this because Apple is a consumer discretionary company.</p>\n<p>Nobody&nbsp;<i>needs</i>&nbsp;an iPhone, so if customers wait five years to replace their phones instead of three years, Apple simply loses the revenue. This is to say nothing about shortages of other products, like the Apple Watch. It's possible Apple could use its supply chain muscle to fight through and save Christmas, but I think this situation is such a perfect storm that Apple's record earnings will probably be peaked for the cycle. If Apple sounds the alarm on inflation and the supply chain in their quarterly earnings call on Thursday, it would have implications not only for Apple, but for the global economy as well. I'd much rather own a company like Union Pacific (UNP) here than Apple, given how much of a battle the supply chain is going to be.</p>\n<p><b>iPhone Demand &amp; Services Revenue</b></p>\n<p>On the plus side, demand for iPhones seems like it will be fairly resilient. Over the years, Apple has been successful in turning the iPhone from something that affluent consumers would shell out $600-$700 for to something that anyone can pay a small monthly subscription to have. To put this in economic terms, there's a lot of&nbsp;consumer surplus&nbsp;with the iPhone. As such, I'd expect iPhone demand to hold up pretty well, even in the face of consumers having less disposable income with stimulus unwinding and higher prices. The devil, of course, will be in Apple's ability to supply demand. One threat to Apple's growth projections is government intervention, however.</p>\n<ol>\n <li>Antitrust concerns. Apple's services revenue growth is especially vulnerable to antitrust action. Apple charges Google (GOOG) over $1 billion per month to be the default search engine on iPhone. Additionally, Apple has a monopoly over the App Store, essentially controlling what apps are allowed to go on iPhones and taking a cut. Apple faces antitrust lawsuits all the time in the US and Europe. Apple's latest surge in services growth will likely be driven by&nbsp;advertising revenue, which benefitted from Apple's privacy changes. These revenue sources are all great for Apple in a vacuum, but the problem is whether the market is pricing Apple stock like all of these revenue sources will see perpetual growth when there is actually political, legal, and economic pushback against them. The question then becomes whether Apple's valuation makes sense in the context of these headwinds to growth.</li>\n <li>Right to repair&nbsp;is potentially a bigger long-term problem for Apple, which has relied on&nbsp;planned obsolescence&nbsp;and rapidly changing technology to coax consumers to upgrade. For example, increasing competition in the automobile market means that cars are now lasting longer, which is better for consumers. If government regulation and/or competition forces Apple to build more durable products, then iPhone sales are not going to sustain themselves at their current pace.</li>\n</ol>\n<p><b>A Side Note: Apple 5G Market Share</b></p>\n<p>To oversimplify things, 3G allowed cellphones to send pictures in the 2000s and 4G made iPhones fast enough to watch and send videos in the 2010s. Now&nbsp;5G is supposed to bringfaster internet to iPhones, with the most obvious use case being watching streaming TV like Netflix (NFLX) or live sports from your phone with minimal interruption. The ultimate goal for 5G is&nbsp;for it to be faster than WiFi, which would be disruptive and a win for consumers. The new iPhones also have a&nbsp;great camera, which is a plus.</p>\n<p>5G hasn't really proved that much so far besides being a corporate buzzword you hear in AT&amp;T and Verizon's saturation of TV advertising, but it will be interesting to see how the technology continues to develop. Apple is dominating the&nbsp;market share&nbsp;for 5G phones with nearly 30% share, nearly twice the share of their closest competitor. I wouldn't extrapolate this to assume that Apple will make huge market share gains for the broader market, but it's a clear positive for the stock.</p>\n<p>Will people rush en masse to buy a new iPhone because it's faster than the old one? I doubt it, but it should provide a tailwind for the stock.</p>\n<p><b>Is Apple Stock A Buy, Sell, Or Hold?</b></p>\n<p>I don't particularly like the risk/reward of buying AAPL stock before earnings here. I've previously modeled about 7% annual returns for investors buying Apple at current prices– the present price implies about the same return. Once my largest holding, the increase in the price of AAPL since late 2019 has far outrun the actual capabilities of the business. I'd rate AAPL a hold here, with moderate long-run returns expected and some downside risk in the short-run from the ongoing supply chain chaos. Apple is expected to earn $5.63 in 2022, which would break its all-time record likely to be set when FY 2021 is reported on Thursday. Recent reporting shows that if you order an iPhone 13 today, Apple estimates that they can get it to you by early December. It's possible Apple could use its supply chain muscle to fight through and save Christmas, but I think this situation is such a perfect storm that Apple's record earnings will probably be peaked for the cycle. The fundamentals of the business are intact and growth is strong. It’s like Amazon&nbsp;(<b>AMZN</b>) -Get Report.Eventually, it will perform better&nbsp;- it’s a question of “when” and not “if.”</p>\n<p>Shares continue to hold the $210 to $212 area and have recently cleared downtrend resistance (blue line). That said, there’s plenty of overhead hurdles.</p>\n<p>Specifically, Alibaba stock is struggling with the 21-week moving average, as well as the 21-month and 10-month moving averages.</p>\n<p>Let’s be clear: There are not a lot of bullish technical components here. If Alibaba stock could hold the 10-week moving average on this week’s dip, I’d feel better about it.</p>\n<p>However, as long as it can hold up over the $210 level and really, the 200-week moving average, I feel okay about Alibaba going into the next six months.</p>\n<p>A push over $235 - thus putting it over all of the moving average hurdles mentioned above - could open up a run to $250, then $263.
