Stocks surged Monday and Tuesday and were flat to modestly higher early Wednesday as investors once again buy the proverbial dip.
\n
Buying the dip is basically a phrase investors use when they are purchasing a stock after a big drop because they think it will quickly bounce back. PYPL stock hit 275% high from the bottom but gave a bunch of that back.
\n
PYPL stock has had a rough ride lately. First, it fell as a result of the failed acquisition attempt of social media app Pinterest , and now it is falling after a bleak Q4 outlook.
\n
It trades today at 20% less than this time last year. However, PYPL stock is for the long term and we will see it going upwards in the coming months. With that in mind, let us dig deeper into my investment thesis.
\n
A Closer Look at PYPL Stock
\n
PayPal reportedrevenue of $6.18 billionand earnings per share of $1.11 for the third quarter. The total payment volume increased by 26% to hit $310 billion and the company successfully added 13.3 million new net active accounts. This brought the total accounts to 416 million.
\n
The consistent rise in the number of active accounts shows the company’s strength. As long as PayPal continues to attract users to the platform, the revenue is going to grow.
\n
What stands out in the third quarter results is the success of PayPal’s Venmo app. It began supporting cryptocurrency services in April and saw a massive rise in payment volume.
\n
The was an increase of 36% in payment volume which hit $60 billion. Cryptocurrency is the hot property today and any platform that offers convenience and security to buyers and sellers will be their first choice.
\n
PayPal has a network of 33 million retailers and allows customers to buy and sell digital currencies. Venmo is turning into a super app that is only going to grow in the coming years.
\n
PayPal will allow users to also make purchases on Amazon with their Venmo accounts beginning next year.
\n
This partnership with Amazon will help the company in the long term and will reflect on the bottom line. PayPal is consistently making moves to make financial transactions convenient, secure and quicker for the customers. The future is all about digital transactions and no one can deny the viability of the business.
\n
For this quarter, the company expects revenue between $6.85 billion and $6.95 billion and adjusted earnings of $1.12 per share.
\n
Analysts weren’t happy with the revenue guidance and the shares took a dip after the announcement but the company expects a rise in revenue of about 18% which is no small feat.
\n
The Bottom Line on PYPL Stock
\n
E-commerce surged in the pandemic and PayPal benefitted from it but it is here to stay. PYPL stock may not double like it did last year but it will certainly move higher.
\n
This dip is a good chance to buy the stock and hold for the long term. It is a temporary dip and PYPL stock may break out in the coming weeks. PYPL stock hit 275% high from the bottom but gave a bunch of that back.\nPYPL stock has had a rough ride lately. First, it fell as a result of the failed acquisition attempt of social media app Pinterest , and now it is falling after a bleak Q4 outlook.\nIt trades today at 20% less than this time last year. However, PYPL stock is for the long term and we will see it going upwards in the coming months. With that in mind, let us dig deeper into my investment thesis.\nA Closer Look at PYPL Stock\nPayPal reportedrevenue of $6.18 billionand earnings per share of $1.11 for the third quarter. The total payment volume increased by 26% to hit $310 billion and the company successfully added 13.3 million new net active accounts. This brought the total accounts to 416 million.\nThe consistent rise in the number of active accounts shows the company’s strength. As long as PayPal continues to attract users to the platform, the revenue is going to grow.\nWhat stands out in the third quarter results is the success of PayPal’s Venmo app. It began supporting cryptocurrency services in April and saw a massive rise in payment volume.\nThe was an increase of 36% in payment volume which hit $60 billion. Cryptocurrency is the hot property today and any platform that offers convenience and security to buyers and sellers will be their first choice.\nPayPal has a network of 33 million retailers and allows customers to buy and sell digital currencies. Venmo is turning into a super app that is only going to grow in the coming years.\nPayPal will allow users to also make purchases on Amazon with their Venmo accounts beginning next year.\nThis partnership with Amazon will help the company in the long term and will reflect on the bottom line. PayPal is consistently making moves to make financial transactions convenient, secure and quicker for the customers. The future is all about digital transactions and no one can deny the viability of the business.\nFor this quarter, the company expects revenue between $6.85 billion and $6.95 billion and adjusted earnings of $1.12 per share.\nAnalysts weren’t happy with the revenue guidance and the shares took a dip after the announcement but the company expects a rise in revenue of about 18% which is no small feat.\nThe Bottom Line on PYPL Stock\nE-commerce surged in the pandemic and PayPal benefitted from it but it is here to stay. PYPL stock may not double like it did last year but it will certainly move higher.\nThis dip is a good chance to buy the stock and hold for the long term. It is a temporary dip and PYPL stock may break out in the coming weeks. It may not happen immediately but it will happen certainly.\nThe fundamentals of the company look good and the Amazon partnership will benefit the business significantly. You might want to be cautious in the short term but the long-term outlook of the company is spectacular.\nPayPal offers right what consumers are looking for, it is taking e-commerce to another level with the Amazon partnership and its revenue is steadily growing.\nOn the date of publication, Vandita Jadeja did not have (either directly or indirectly) any positions in the securities mentioned in this article. The opinions expressed in this article are those of the writer, subject to the InvestorPlace.comPublishing Guidelines.\nVandita Jadeja is a CPA and a freelance financial copywriter who loves to read and write about stocks. Since the certification process takes three to six months and the deadline is Sept 24, it will be \"virtually impossible\" for exchanges that haven't already won approval to get it in time, the regulator said.\nHowever, the regulatory move is expected to affect only a small portion of the country's crypto activity. South Korea's four biggest exchanges, including Upbit and Bithumb, have all registered as legal trading platforms - and they account for about 97 per cent of trading volume in the country, according to ruling party lawmaker Noh Woong-rae last week.\nInvestors who bought \"Kimchi coins\" - cryptos that primarily developed and traded by South Koreans that tend to be smaller and less liquid than many - are likely to be the most affected. Platforms that will fail to meet the regulatory requirements must notify their clients of possible closure by Friday (Sept 17).\nThe Korean won is the sixth-most-used fiat currency in the world to trade major cryptocurrencies as of Wednesday, CoinMarketCap data show, and over the years a \"Kimchi premium\" has often existed where Bitcoin costs more than elsewhere in the world due to high demand.\nThe coins listed only on the small exchanges being forced to shut down generally lack intrinsic value and serve little purpose, which could make it difficult to calculate their fair value or estimate the scope of the overall impact, according to market watchers. The shutdowns could cause 3 trillion won (S$3.45 billion) of damage to investors in the so-called Kimchi coins, according to an estimate by chair of the Korea Society of Fintech Blockchain last week.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":219,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":806909055,"gmtCreate":1627621127577,"gmtModify":1633757676999,"author":{"id":"3572945845916163","authorId":"3572945845916163","name":"NareshwG","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0d6dc06165c1a0cc4f1a8169ea48573d","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572945845916163","authorIdStr":"3572945845916163"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"What happened is not fair for her.. It’s more ambiguous. If the numbers say anything, maybe it’s that “sell in May and go away” is only half right. Since 1900, someone who sold in May actually could have retired earlier and with more money—but only if they hung around and waited to buy their stocks back during the usual summer panic.

Obvious note: If you want an easy life, ignore all trading advice from the Wall Street crowd. Set some basic rules—asset allocation, clearly established sell signals and so on—and stick to them.

On the other hand, there’s no point leaving money on the table if you’re willing to take a more active role.

The Wall Street phrase “sell in May” dates back at least to the 1930s. Originally it seems to have started in Great Britain, where the rhyme went “sell in May, go away, and don’t come back till St Leger’s Day”—meaning a famous horse race that takes place in mid-September. The theory was that the stock market’s returns over the summer months are usually so dismal that there’s really no point being in the market.

The updated version of this adage calls it “the Hallowe’en Effect,” and stretches the hiatus from May 1 to October 31: A full six months.

It sounds like superstitious nonsense, but there is some remarkable evidence for it.One exhaustive academic studylooked at all the available stock market data from around the world going as far back as 1693 (coincidentally, the time of the Salem witch trials in Massachusetts—make of this what you will).

“In none of the 65 countries for which we have total returns and short term interest rates available—with the exception of Mauritius — can we reject a Sell in May effect,” report researchers Cherry Zhang and Ben Jacobsen. “Summer risk premiums are not only not significantly positive, they are in most cases not even marginally positive. In 45 countries the excess returns during summer have been negative, and in seven significantly so,” they write. In other words: Historically, all the stock market’s returns have come during the winter months. It’s more ambiguous. If the numbers say anything, maybe it’s that “sell in May and go away” is only half right. Since 1900, someone who sold in May actually could have retired earlier and with more money—but only if they hung around and waited to buy their stocks back during the usual summer panic.Obvious note: If you want an easy life, ignore all trading advice from the Wall Street crowd. Set some basic rules—asset allocation, clearly established sell signals and so on—and stick to them.On the other hand, there’s no point leaving money on the table if you’re willing to take a more active role. It sounds like superstitious nonsense, but there is some remarkable evidence for it.One exhaustive academic studylooked at all the available stock market data from around the world going as far back as 1693 (coincidentally, the time of the Salem witch trials in Massachusetts—make of this what you will).“In none of the 65 countries for which we have total returns and short term interest rates available—with the exception of Mauritius — can we reject a Sell in May effect,” report researchers Cherry Zhang and Ben Jacobsen. “Summer risk premiums are not only not significantly positive, they are in most cases not even marginally positive. In 45 countries the excess returns during summer have been negative, and in seven significantly so,” they write. In other words: Historically, all the stock market’s returns have come during the winter months. During the summer months, typically, the stock market’s returns haven’t been any better than the returns on keeping your money in the bank.(Oh, unless you’re living in Mauritius.)Smart money mavens have a number of pushbacks to all this. They’ll point out that this is somewhat random, and makes no logical sense. They’ll warn that likely gains don’t really compensate for the trading costs, the potential taxes (in a taxable account). And they’ll add that you risk missing out if the market rises.Furthermore, they’ll say, once you and I get in the habit of getting into the market and then out of it again, most of us will simply mess it up. We’ll get back in too early, or too late, or not at all.All reasonable points. So the advice, “leave it alone,” is not wrong. But…the mathematical criticism of “sell in May” is partly off-beam. That’s because critics assume we sell on May 1 and go away, and don’t come back until October 31.I’ve looked through the history of the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA,+0.70% going back to 1900 and something amazing leaps out.Ignore where the market ends up on October 31. The real opportunity occurs at some point during the six month period. There hasalmost alwaysbeen a “summer selloff.” In 105 out of 120 years, or 88% of the time, the stock market has posted a decline at some stage in the six months after May 1.So in almost 9 years out of 10, someone who sold their stock funds at the start of May was able to buy them back more cheaply during the next six months. The average decline is 8%. Its revenue fell 1% year over year to $19.7 billion, but still beat estimates by $1.75 billion.
\n
Its non-GAAP net income declined 6% to $5.7 billion. Its non-GAAP earnings per share, buoyed by buybacks, dipped 1% to $1.39 and cleared expectations by $0.25. Those numbers exclude its NAND business, which will be sold to SK Hynix, and other one-time items.
\n
Intel expects its revenue and non-GAAP earnings to decline 10% and 15% year over year, respectively, in the second quarter. Analysts had expected its revenue and earnings to fall 9% and 19%, respectively.
\n
For the full year, Intel expects its GAAP revenue to dip 1% to $77 billion, and for its non-GAAP revenue to drop 7% to $72.5 billion, which misses the consensus forecast of $72.8 billion. It expects its non-GAAP EPS to decline 13%, compared to gloomier forecasts for a 19% decline.
\n
Intel's first-quarter growth cleared Wall Street's low bar, but its mixed guidance indicated its troubles would persist throughout the year. Intel's stock might look cheap at 13 times forward earnings with a decent forward yield of 2.4%, but it's still not worth buying for five simple reasons.
\n
1. PC sales will decelerate after the pandemic ends
\n
Intel's Client Computing Group (CCG) revenue rose 8% year over year to $10.6 billion during the quarter as it sold more CPUs for PCs. Its total PC unit volumes increased 38% year over year, with a 54% jump in notebook volumes offsetting a 4% decline in desktop volumes.
\n
However, PC sales mainly rose because the pandemic caused more people to buy new systems for remote work, online education, and gaming. That tailwind should fade after the pandemic ends.
\n
2. It could lose more market share to AMD
\n
Intel's ongoingchip shortage, which started in 2018 and hasn't been resolved yet, caused many PC makers to buy more chips from its fabless rival AMD (NASDAQ:AMD), which outsources its chip production to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (NYSE:TSM) instead of manufacturing its chips internally.
\n
As a result, Intel ceded the desktop and notebook CPU markets to AMD over the past three years.
\n
DATA SOURCE: PASSMARK SOFTWARE.
\n
Those declines could continue for the foreseeable future as the pandemic-related tailwinds dissipate and AMD moves further ahead in the \"process race\" to create smaller and more powerful chips with TSMC.
\n
3. Existential threats in the data center market
\n
Cloud capex soared across the world over the past year as data centers upgraded their hardware to cope with more online activities throughout the pandemic.
\n
For example, the three largest hyper-cloud companies --Amazon,Microsoft, and Alphabet's Google -- collectively boosted their capex 32% in 2020. That increased spending should be good news for Intel, which holds a near-monopoly in data center CPUs.
\n
Yet Intel's data center group (DCG) revenue declined 20% year over year to $5.6 billion during the first quarter. It blamed that contraction on a \"challenging\" comparison to its 43% growth a year ago, which benefited from upgrades across the cloud, enterprise, government, and communication sectors.
\n
But those challenging comparisons could persist throughout 2021 as cloud and data center customers prioritize purchases of other chips, such as NVIDIA's (NASDAQ:NVDA) high-end GPUs for crunching AI tasks, over Intel's flagship Xeon CPUs. NVIDIA's recent launch of its own data center CPU and its planned takeover of Arm could exacerbate that pressure.
\n
4. Unclear plans for its own foundry
\n
To resolve its ongoing production issues, Intel will outsource the production of some of its chips to TSMC. But it also plans to accept third-party chip orders at its new Intel Foundry Services division.
\n
This strategy contradicts itself. Intel still needs TSMC to produce some of its new chips because of the limitations of its existing foundries, yet it's building new plants to manufacture chips for other fabless chipmakers.
\n
In other words, Intel would still be temporarily dependent on TSMC, which remains ahead in the process race, while trying to compete against TSMC andSamsungfor orders of less advanced chips. The foundry services business will also likely generate lower-margin revenue than its CCG and DCG businesses.
\n
5. Gross margin pressure and reduced buybacks
\n
Lastly, Intel's adjusted gross margin -- which dropped 6.1 percentage points year over year to 58.4% during the first quarter -- could remain under pressure as its PC sales decelerate, its data center sales decline, and it expands its lower-margin foundry services business.
\n
Intel also plans to reduce its buybacks to conserve more cash for its expansion efforts. That's a necessary measure, but it will throttle its EPS growth as its gross and operating margins contract.
\n
The bottom line
\n
Intel isn't doomed yet, but it's falling behind better-run chipmakers like AMD, NVIDIA, and TSMC. Intel's new CEO Pat Gelsinger claims 2021 will be a \"pivotal year\" for the company -- but I'd like to see it actually pivot before I can consider it a worthy investment.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
5 Reasons to Avoid Intel After Its Q1 Earnings Report
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n5 Reasons to Avoid Intel After Its Q1 Earnings Report\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-04-29 09:45 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
The world's top PC and data center CPU maker is losing its edge.\nIntel's stock recently tumbled after the chipmaker posted its first-quarter earnings. It blamed that contraction on a \"challenging\" comparison to its 43% growth a year ago, which benefited from upgrades across the cloud, enterprise, government, and communication sectors.\nBut those challenging comparisons could persist throughout 2021 as cloud and data center customers prioritize purchases of other chips, such as NVIDIA's (NASDAQ:NVDA) high-end GPUs for crunching AI tasks, over Intel's flagship Xeon CPUs. NVIDIA's recent launch of its own data center CPU and its planned takeover of Arm could exacerbate that pressure.\n4. Unclear plans for its own foundry\nTo resolve its ongoing production issues, Intel will outsource the production of some of its chips to TSMC. But it also plans to accept third-party chip orders at its new Intel Foundry Services division.\nThis strategy contradicts itself. Intel still needs TSMC to produce some of its new chips because of the limitations of its existing foundries, yet it's building new plants to manufacture chips for other fabless chipmakers.\nIn other words, Intel would still be temporarily dependent on TSMC, which remains ahead in the process race, while trying to compete against TSMC andSamsungfor orders of less advanced chips. The foundry services business will also likely generate lower-margin revenue than its CCG and DCG businesses.\n5. Gross margin pressure and reduced buybacks\nLastly, Intel's adjusted gross margin -- which dropped 6.1 percentage points year over year to 58.4% during the first quarter -- could remain under pressure as its PC sales decelerate, its data center sales decline, and it expands its lower-margin foundry services business.\nIntel also plans to reduce its buybacks to conserve more cash for its expansion efforts. That's a necessary measure, but it will throttle its EPS growth as its gross and operating margins contract.\nThe bottom line\nIntel isn't doomed yet, but it's falling behind better-run chipmakers like AMD, NVIDIA, and TSMC. Intel's new CEO Pat Gelsinger claims 2021 will be a \"pivotal year\" for the company -- but I'd like to see it actually pivot before I can consider it a worthy investment.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":225,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":877425517,"gmtCreate":1637975148195,"gmtModify":1637975148829,"author":{"id":"3572945845916163","authorId":"3572945845916163","name":"NareshwG","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0d6dc06165c1a0cc4f1a8169ea48573d","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572945845916163","authorIdStr":"3572945845916163"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Nvda has high potential. The team working on the effort, part of the SEC’s enforcement division, uses analytics and has built a database to try to pinpoint potential manipulators of EPS, the commonly used measure of a company’s financial performance.
\n
“Three cases is not a huge amount, but it does show that they’re focused on it,” said David Rosenfeld, associate law professor at Northern Illinois University and former co-head of enforcement for the SEC’s New York office. “It takes a fair amount of time to unravel cases involving accounting issues.”
\n
The SEC’s ongoing effort to scrutinize these companies falls in line with Chairman Gary Gensler’s far-reaching policy agenda bent on requiring stronger corporate disclosures and overhauling some Wall Street firms’ business models to better protect investors.
\n
Investors use a company’s price-to-earnings ratio, which is calculated by dividing the share price by EPS, to help gauge a stock’s value relative to earnings.
\n
EPS of companies in the S&P 1500 have largely climbed over the past decade, and the quarterly average EPS, as of June 30, was $1.298, up from 38 cents a year earlier, when companies were dealing with the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, according to FactSet Research Systems Inc., a data provider. Stock prices in recent years have risen faster than company profit, though corporate earnings remain the primary driver of stocks over the long term.
\n
Analysts come up with EPS estimates for companies ahead of quarterly earnings announcements based on their projected future growth. It is unclear to what extent companies rely on earnings-management practices to meet or beat analyst estimates.
\n
“Many investors suspect EPS manipulation is more common than the cases suggest,” said Amy Borrus, executive director of the Council of Institutional Investors, which represents pension funds and other large money managers.
\n
EPS manipulations usually aren’t detected by auditors conducting high-level reviews of companies’ quarterly financials. Auditors generally test a company’s internal controls and question executives about why they made large or unusual journal entries during a particular period, said Denis Usher, partner in charge of audit and consulting services for U.S.-listed companies at professional-services firm Mazars U.S.A. LLP. A challenge in detecting manipulations is that the accounting adjustments are usually small and don’t exceed a certain materiality threshold that auditors use for determining the aspects of quarterly adjustments to examine, he said.
\n
The SEC’s so-called EPS Initiative in August charged Healthcare Services Group Inc., which provides housekeeping and other services to healthcare facilities. The agency said the Bensalem, Pa.-based company failed to accrue for and disclose material loss contingencies—or a potential future loss—related to the settlement of private litigation in a timely fashion, as required by U.S. generally accepted accounting principles.
\n
There are about 5,500 companies publicly listed on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq combined, according to the exchanges. SEC officials use risk-based data analytics to find companies that may have engaged in manipulations, and sometimes rounding issues can lead to an investigation.
\n
The initiative’s database was built on the basis of academic research dating back to 2009 that examined the unusually high absence of the numeral “4” in companies’ quarterly financial numbers, posing questions whether firms were improperly rounding up their earnings.
\n
Companies continue to use the numeral “4” in their unrounded quarterly EPS in less than 10% of cases, highlighting the potential for earnings manipulation through strategic rounding, said Nadya Malenko, an associate finance professor at University of Michigan. She conducted the research with former SEC commissioner Joseph Grundfest and Yao Shen, an assistant finance professor at Baruch College.
\n
The researchers assumed that every number should appear in the tenths place of unrounded EPS 10% of the time. Some companies could have an unusually low usage of “4” by statistical chance, but there is a strong correlation between this low usage and firms’ future restatements in their overall financials, Ms. Malenko said.
\n
“We have a…metric that appears to be a remarkably powerful predictor of problematic accounting behavior,” said Mr. Grundfest, now a professor of law and business at Stanford University.
\n
The SEC seeks to detect other earnings-management practices that are in violation of federal securities laws, including not recording loss contingencies in the appropriate quarters and making unsupported adjustments, such as those made to stock-based compensation accounts.
\n
Before the Healthcare Services Group settlement, the SEC in September 2020 said it had brought similar charges of EPS inflation for two other companies, modular carpet maker Interface Inc. and financial-services firm Fulton Financial Corp.
\n
Fulton Financial agreed to pay $1.5 million to settle the charges, while Interface settled for $5 million and Healthcare Services for $6 million. The median fine that public companies paid in cases involving financial reporting for the year ended September 2020 was $1.5 million, according to consulting firm Cornerstone Research.
\n
Interface and Fulton Financial declined to comment. Healthcare Services didn’t respond to a request for comment. The companies and the individuals didn’t admit or deny the charges in settling with the SEC.
\n
The U.S. securities regulator, currently, is investigating multiple companies over potential manipulations of earnings per share as part of the ongoing initiative, which may result in charges, a person familiar with the matter said.
\n
Unlike initiatives such as those focused on share-class selection disclosure—in which investment advisers provide conflicts of interest related to their practices—and short selling, the EPS initiative involves investigating financial fraud, which is particularly complex. The probes require witnesses and auditors to testify and the SEC to conduct a detailed analysis of GAAP. Financial fraud investigations typically take between 18 to 24 months.
\n
The SEC’s recent settlements could spur auditors to review more quarterly journal entries than they normally would, Mazars’ Mr. Usher said. “It may heighten our sense of risk related to those smaller journal entries that we might not have paid as much attention to in the past,” he said.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
SEC Digs Deeper Into Companies’ EPS Manipulation
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nSEC Digs Deeper Into Companies’ EPS Manipulation\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-10-11 10:52 GMT+8 WSJ\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
The Securities and Exchange Commission’s review of companies’ earnings per share has brought cases against three firms over the past year or so, and could come into greater focus under the regulator’s...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{},"source_url":"https://www.wsj.com/articles/sec-digs-deeper-into-companies-eps-manipulation-11633870803?mod=markets_lead_pos6","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1169252841","content_text":"The Securities and Exchange Commission’s review of companies’ earnings per share has brought cases against three firms over the past year or so, and could come into greater focus under the regulator’s new leadership.\nThe initiative, launched a few years ago, reviews earnings per share for the majority of U.S. public companies at least once a year, looking to spot questionable reported figures. Auditors generally test a company’s internal controls and question executives about why they made large or unusual journal entries during a particular period, said Denis Usher, partner in charge of audit and consulting services for U.S.-listed companies at professional-services firm Mazars U.S.A. LLP. A challenge in detecting manipulations is that the accounting adjustments are usually small and don’t exceed a certain materiality threshold that auditors use for determining the aspects of quarterly adjustments to examine, he said.\nThe SEC’s so-called EPS Initiative in August charged Healthcare Services Group Inc., which provides housekeeping and other services to healthcare facilities. The agency said the Bensalem, Pa.-based company failed to accrue for and disclose material loss contingencies—or a potential future loss—related to the settlement of private litigation in a timely fashion, as required by U.S. generally accepted accounting principles.\nThere are about 5,500 companies publicly listed on the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq combined, according to the exchanges. SEC officials use risk-based data analytics to find companies that may have engaged in manipulations, and sometimes rounding issues can lead to an investigation.\nThe initiative’s database was built on the basis of academic research dating back to 2009 that examined the unusually high absence of the numeral “4” in companies’ quarterly financial numbers, posing questions whether firms were improperly rounding up their earnings.\nCompanies continue to use the numeral “4” in their unrounded quarterly EPS in less than 10% of cases, highlighting the potential for earnings manipulation through strategic rounding, said Nadya Malenko, an associate finance professor at University of Michigan. She conducted the research with former SEC commissioner Joseph Grundfest and Yao Shen, an assistant finance professor at Baruch College.\nThe researchers assumed that every number should appear in the tenths place of unrounded EPS 10% of the time. Some companies could have an unusually low usage of “4” by statistical chance, but there is a strong correlation between this low usage and firms’ future restatements in their overall financials, Ms. Malenko said.\n“We have a…metric that appears to be a remarkably powerful predictor of problematic accounting behavior,” said Mr. Grundfest, now a professor of law and business at Stanford University.\nThe SEC seeks to detect other earnings-management practices that are in violation of federal securities laws, including not recording loss contingencies in the appropriate quarters and making unsupported adjustments, such as those made to stock-based compensation accounts.\nBefore the Healthcare Services Group settlement, the SEC in September 2020 said it had brought similar charges of EPS inflation for two other companies, modular carpet maker Interface Inc. and financial-services firm Fulton Financial Corp.\nFulton Financial agreed to pay $1.5 million to settle the charges, while Interface settled for $5 million and Healthcare Services for $6 million. The median fine that public companies paid in cases involving financial reporting for the year ended September 2020 was $1.5 million, according to consulting firm Cornerstone Research.\nInterface and Fulton Financial declined to comment. Healthcare Services didn’t respond to a request for comment. The companies and the individuals didn’t admit or deny the charges in settling with the SEC.\nThe U.S. securities regulator, currently, is investigating multiple companies over potential manipulations of earnings per share as part of the ongoing initiative, which may result in charges, a person familiar with the matter said.\nUnlike initiatives such as those focused on share-class selection disclosure—in which investment advisers provide conflicts of interest related to their practices—and short selling, the EPS initiative involves investigating financial fraud, which is particularly complex. The probes require witnesses and auditors to testify and the SEC to conduct a detailed analysis of GAAP. Financial fraud investigations typically take between 18 to 24 months.\nThe SEC’s recent settlements could spur auditors to review more quarterly journal entries than they normally would, Mazars’ Mr. Usher said. “It may heighten our sense of risk related to those smaller journal entries that we might not have paid as much attention to in the past,” he said.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":468,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":803682268,"gmtCreate":1627436269054,"gmtModify":1633765011260,"author":{"id":"3572945845916163","authorId":"3572945845916163","name":"NareshwG","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0d6dc06165c1a0cc4f1a8169ea48573d","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572945845916163","authorIdStr":"3572945845916163"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"When it falls, it's time to buy the dip.. =) ","listText":"When it falls, it's time to buy the dip.. =) ","text":"When it falls, it's time to buy the dip.. =)","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":12,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/803682268","repostId":"2154991792","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":100,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":175968490,"gmtCreate":1627003008110,"gmtModify":1633768899050,"author":{"id":"3572945845916163","authorId":"3572945845916163","name":"NareshwG","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0d6dc06165c1a0cc4f1a8169ea48573d","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572945845916163","authorIdStr":"3572945845916163"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"We need to fight this war for longer than expected.. And it underscored how quickly the pandemic's latest surge had unsettled Americans who had begun to believe the worst was over, sending politicians and public health officials scrambling to recalibrate their responses.\n\"This is like the moment in the horror movie when you think the horror is over and the credits are about to roll,\" said Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md. \"And it all starts back up again.\"\nThe choice by millions to reject the vaccine has had the consequences that public health officials predicted: The number of new cases in the country has shot up almost 250 per cent since the beginning of the month, with an average of more than 41,000 infections being diagnosed each day during the past week - up from 12,000.\nThe disease caused by the virus is claiming about 250 lives each day - far fewer than during the peaks last year, but still 42 per cent higher than two weeks ago. More than 97 per cent of those hospitalised are unvaccinated, Dr Walensky said last week.\nThe public health crisis is particularly acute in parts of the country where vaccination rates are the lowest. In Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, the number of daily new cases is up more than 200 per cent in the past two weeks, driving new hospitalisations and deaths almost exclusively among the unvaccinated. Intensive care units are filled or filling in southern Missouri and northern Arkansas.\nThe turnabout is forcing both political parties in Washington to grapple - so far in halting and tentative ways - with questions about what tone they should strike, what guidance they should provide and what changes they need to make to confront the latest iteration of the worst public health crisis in a century.\nThe White House announced new grants on Thursday to local health offices for vaccines and increased testing in rural communities, even as administration officials said they were \"making continued progress in our fight against the virus\" and insisted that there was no need to reconsider their basic strategy. Although reports of so-called breakthrough infections in vaccinated people are growing, they remain relatively uncommon, and those that cause severe illness, hospitalisation or death are especially so.\nOn Capitol Hill on Thursday, House Republican leaders and elected doctors only grudgingly signalled their support for vaccinations, though even that support was mixed.\n\"If you are at risk, you should be getting this vaccine,\" said Rep. Andy Harris of Maryland, a physician, adding, \"We urge all Americans to talk to their doctors about the risks of Covid-19, talk to their doctors about the benefits of getting vaccinated and then come to a decision.\"\nRep. Greg Murphy, R-N.C., said, \"This vaccine is a medicine, and just like with any other medicines, there are side effects and this is a personal decision.\"\nTheir news conference was advertised as an attempt to \"discuss the need for individuals to get vaccinated.\" But it was dominated by efforts to promote an unproven theory that the Chinese released a virulent, human-made virus on the world and accusations that Democrats covered it up.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":77,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":113161010,"gmtCreate":1622598430930,"gmtModify":1634100073981,"author":{"id":"3572945845916163","authorId":"3572945845916163","name":"NareshwG","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0d6dc06165c1a0cc4f1a8169ea48573d","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3572945845916163","authorIdStr":"3572945845916163"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"It's time to do some shopping.. The heavyweight tech sector(.SPLRCT)fell while the healthcare sector(.SPXHC)was dragged down by a weak profit forecast from Abbott Laboratories(ABT.N).Data showed U.S.manufacturing activity pickedup in May as pent-up demand in a reopening economy boosted orders.
