","summary":"A change of venue and skittish advertisers make it a volatile situation.","content":"
fuboTV (NYSE:FUBO) has a lot riding on the Qatar World Cup qualifying games that kicked off on June 3.
\n
As the exclusive rights holder to livestream the 70 soccer matches of the South American Football Confederation, also known as CONMEBOL, the sports livestreaming platform has an opportunity to get tens of millions of new fans to sign up for its service.
\n
With fuboTV's plans to launch a new sports betting platform later this year and seamlessly blend the two operations into a cohesive whole, the qualifying matches represent a huge revenue opportunity.
\n
Yet controversy over where the Copa America portion of the games will be played could upset those plans.
\n
\n
A country at risk
\n
Copa America is the oldest and arguably most prestigious football competition of national teams. Started in 1910 as part of celebrations around Argentina's independence, Chile, Uruguay, and Brazil also participated.
\n
Back then, the tournament was called the Campeonato Sudamericano de Selecciones, but it changed to Copa America in 1975 and in 1993 began inviting teams from outside South America to compete. The U.S. and Mexico were the first teams permitted entry, though no outside club has ever won the tournaments.
\n
This year Copa America was to be co-hosted by Columbia and Argentina, but CONMEBOL pulled the 10-nation games from Columbia because of civil unrest and Argentina backed out because of a spike in coronavirus cases.
\n
CONMEBOL chose Brazil as the location of the games, but an outcry arose over the country's choice because of the large number of COVID-19 deaths that have occurred there, some 479,000, which is second only to the U.S.
\n
With players complaining about the location choice, multinational companies began dropping their sponsorship of the games, potentially undermining the games and putting fuboTV's opportunity in jeopardy.
\n
A case of cold feet
\n
AmBev (NYSE:ABEV), the Brazilian unit of Anheuser-Busch InBev (NYSE:BUD)and sponsor of the Brazilian national team, announced \"its brands will not be present at the Copa America,\" as did Mastercard (NYSE:MA), which said it would not \"activate\" its sponsorship of the games, something it has done since 1992.
\n
That was followed by global spirits distributor Diageo (NYSE:DEO), which said it was withdrawing sponsorship of Copa America \"given the current Brazilian health situation and out of respect for this moment of the COVID-19 pandemic.\"
\n
Parties have gone to court to try to block Brazil from hosting the games, but the country's Supreme Court rejected the injunction bids and said the games could proceed, though they ordered various health and safety measures be implemented.
\n
There also don't seem to be any boycotts of the games yet. While the Brazilian national team had called out \"humanitarian\" concerns over locating the games in their home country, it said it would still play.
\n
An exclusive opportunity
\n
This is why the qualifying games are so critical for fuboTV. To contain the possible spread of COVID-19, Brazilian officials are holding the games without fans present in the stadium, and the teams will undergo testing every 48 hours. Players will also have their movements restricted as they travel between the four host cities.
\n
That means fans will need to find alternative means of watching the games, and with the sporting event's huge global popularity, fuboTV has a unique opportunity to see a massive influx of new subscribers to its streaming service.
\n
Select English-language games will be available to subscribers who have the fubo Sports Network, but they will only be available on fuboTV and not through the network's usual off-platform distribution partners, such as ViacomCBS' Pluto TV.
\n
The Copa America games will be free to current fuboTV subscribers, while new subscribers need to sign up for one of fubo's plans and then add the CONMEBOL & More package for an additional $7 per month. That package includes eight other premium sports channels featuring soccer, baseball, football, basketball, and more.
\n
It's still game on
\n
fuboTV looks like it will avoid a collapse of the Copa America games, though other CONMEBOL games are going off without a hitch so far. As long as other major sponsors stay put, the teams don't boycott, and there are no COVID-19 outbreaks among players, it should be a success.
\n
The situation, though, shows just how fragile the sporting world still is as it emerges from the pandemic and tries returning to a sense of normalcy. fuboTV, though, still has enormous growth prospects before it.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; The U.S. and Mexico were the first teams permitted entry, though no outside club has ever won the tournaments.\nThis year Copa America was to be co-hosted by Columbia and Argentina, but CONMEBOL pulled the 10-nation games from Columbia because of civil unrest and Argentina backed out because of a spike in coronavirus cases.\nCONMEBOL chose Brazil as the location of the games, but an outcry arose over the country's choice because of the large number of COVID-19 deaths that have occurred there, some 479,000, which is second only to the U.S.\nWith players complaining about the location choice, multinational companies began dropping their sponsorship of the games, potentially undermining the games and putting fuboTV's opportunity in jeopardy.\nA case of cold feet\nAmBev (NYSE:ABEV), the Brazilian unit of Anheuser-Busch InBev (NYSE:BUD)and sponsor of the Brazilian national team, announced \"its brands will not be present at the Copa America,\" as did Mastercard (NYSE:MA), which said it would not \"activate\" its sponsorship of the games, something it has done since 1992.\nThat was followed by global spirits distributor Diageo (NYSE:DEO), which said it was withdrawing sponsorship of Copa America \"given the current Brazilian health situation and out of respect for this moment of the COVID-19 pandemic.\"\nParties have gone to court to try to block Brazil from hosting the games, but the country's Supreme Court rejected the injunction bids and said the games could proceed, though they ordered various health and safety measures be implemented.\nThere also don't seem to be any boycotts of the games yet. While the Brazilian national team had called out \"humanitarian\" concerns over locating the games in their home country, it said it would still play.\nAn exclusive opportunity\nThis is why the qualifying games are so critical for fuboTV. To contain the possible spread of COVID-19, Brazilian officials are holding the games without fans present in the stadium, and the teams will undergo testing every 48 hours. Players will also have their movements restricted as they travel between the four host cities.\nThat means fans will need to find alternative means of watching the games, and with the sporting event's huge global popularity, fuboTV has a unique opportunity to see a massive influx of new subscribers to its streaming service.\nSelect English-language games will be available to subscribers who have the fubo Sports Network, but they will only be available on fuboTV and not through the network's usual off-platform distribution partners, such as ViacomCBS' Pluto TV.\nThe Copa America games will be free to current fuboTV subscribers, while new subscribers need to sign up for one of fubo's plans and then add the CONMEBOL & More package for an additional $7 per month. That package includes eight other premium sports channels featuring soccer, baseball, football, basketball, and more.\nIt's still game on\nfuboTV looks like it will avoid a collapse of the Copa America games, though other CONMEBOL games are going off without a hitch so far. As long as other major sponsors stay put, the teams don't boycott, and there are no COVID-19 outbreaks among players, it should be a success.\nThe situation, though, shows just how fragile the sporting world still is as it emerges from the pandemic and tries returning to a sense of normalcy. fuboTV, though, still has enormous growth prospects before it.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":513,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":186441194,"gmtCreate":1623536518918,"gmtModify":1631889799452,"author":{"id":"3573606104770883","authorId":"3573606104770883","name":"Bliang","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0d7cd18997f43a1b7035c0207a1c5872","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573606104770883","authorIdStr":"3573606104770883"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good","listText":"Good","text":"Good","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/186441194","repostId":"2142204074","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":772,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":186556905,"gmtCreate":1623513836107,"gmtModify":1631889799464,"author":{"id":"3573606104770883","authorId":"3573606104770883","name":"Bliang","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0d7cd18997f43a1b7035c0207a1c5872","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573606104770883","authorIdStr":"3573606104770883"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good company","listText":"Good company","text":"Good company","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/186556905","repostId":"1189143522","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1189143522","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1623513679,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1189143522?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-06-13 00:01","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Snowflake Is a Growth Juggernaut. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been expecting a gain of 4.7%.\n\"I think there were a lot of people who held back, who wanted to see the hotter inflation number,\" CNBC's Jim Cramer said on \"Squawk on the Street.\" \"Now they've said, 'OK, now that's over with. Let's do some buying.' Because they've been on the sideline and they want to get in. I don't think that's actually usual these days because there's still so much buying power out there. People want in.\"\nFears of spiking inflation have weighed on the stock market in the last month, with investors worried the jump in prices will raise costs for companies, spark a move higher in interest rates and cause the Federal Reserve to remove its easy money policies.\n\"This CPI isn't likely to change the narrative dramatically, and there are still indications that inflation momentum is set to abate in the coming months,\" Adam Crisafulli, founder of Vital Knowledge, said in a note Thursday.\nMany economists also said the surge in used car costs for the month could have skewed the inflation reading. Used car and truck prices jumped more than 7%, accounting for one-third of the total increase for the month, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The jump in used car prices likely reflects a temporary phenomenon related to the pandemic and auto supply.\nA separate report released Thursday showed that jobless claims for the week ended June 5 came in at 376,000, versus a Dow Jones estimate of 370,000. The total still marked the lowest of the pandemic era.\nUPS shares rose about 1% afteran upgrade from JPMorgan. Shares of Boeing were higher, but Delta Air Lines slipped.\nVideo-game retailer and meme stock GameStop fell 27% even after the company tapped former Amazon executive Matt Furlong to be its next CEO and said that sales rose 25% last quarter. More than anything, investors are buying it now as a speculative investment.\nThe price was sitting at $37,100 as of Friday afternoon and has been struggling to rebound to its May highs after Tesla CEO Elon Musk began moving crypto markets, sending bitcoin lower. The cryptocurrency is the largest by market cap, which is $693 billion as of Friday, according to Coin Metrics.\nHistorically, bitcoin’s demand has been driven largely by retail investors, but that narrative changed late last year as big investors and institutions began reconsidering their positions on it. Bitcoin has always and continues to suffer from reputational issues that are hard for it to shake, mostly because of its newness and therefore the lack of data or history to support its raison d’être.\nIf you’ve gotten caught in the confusion and misinformation around bitcoin, here are the key things to focus on if you’re considering bitcoin for your portfolio.\nBull case\nBitcoin, like gold, is a non-sovereign store of value that people can use to store wealth outside of the U.S. dollar system. It’s “digital gold” as its proponents often say, which is attractive given the increasing collective concern about inflation. More than that, it has the potential, once the market structure evolves, to serve as digital cash both domestically and across borders.\n“These are large markets, and you get them almost as a free call option on the ‘digital gold’ thesis,” said Matt Hougan, chief investment officer at Bitwise Asset Management. It’s also an attractive asset from a portfolio construction perspective, he added, because it gives investors high potential returns, low correlations to stocks and bonds, and liquidity in one asset.\n“The bull case can be seen when you look at the price trend, volume, and retail and institutional adoption,” said Max Schatzow, an attorney at Stark & Stark, where he advises investment advisers and broker-dealers on a range of financial regulatory matters. “We already witnessed the price north of $60,000 so with current prices, it would seem like there is room for growth based solely on historical prices. If demand continues to rise, that price should probably follow.”\nBear case\nBitcoin is high risk with potentially high reward or complete wipeouts that go to zero, said Jason Pride, CIO of private wealth at Glenmede. For that reason, his firm doesn’t recommend investors include it in their portfolio, despite some of the high returns the market has seen from it. Many point to bitcoin as being a diversifying non-correlated asset, but Pride noted that with every equity decline the market has seen, bitcoin has declined dramatically in tandem with it.\n“If the Fed were to pull back on stimulus, a majority of risk assets would decline,” he said. “If we were to have some extraordinary event, an economic downturn, bitcoin would probably be suffering right alongside equities. It did during the pandemic and during the December 2018 correction, which was a market liquidity event.”\nPlus, major exchanges and insurers might not have enough reserves to cover all their cryptocurrency activity, Schatzow said.\nBiggest risks\nVolatility– Bitcoin’s price suffers from massive swings due to its speculative nature and developing market infrastructure. While less volatility is necessary for it to prove itself a more reliable asset, it will always be somewhat volatile because of its perfect inelasticity, meaning the quantity of the bitcoin supply (which, again, is set at 21 million) doesn’t change in response to a move in the price of bitcoin. However, as the market structure continues to improve and mature price volatility should calm down.\n“Investors should think of bitcoin as a long-term buy-and-hold investment,” said Hougan. “Those who try to speculate on the short-term price movements of bitcoin are liable to get hurt.”\nLack of regulation– Cryptocurrencies are still so young that regulators still don’t fully understand which agencies should regulate them or how, since crypto also doesn’t fit perfectly into existing frameworks. For example, because bitcoin and other digital assets aren’t securities, they aren’t available on most custodial platforms. Custodians and other regulated financial firms can’t accommodate the rising crypto demand until there’s more regulatory clarity, which could slow industry growth. “More regulation will significantly help boost bitcoin’s adoption, to a point,” Hougan said. “But regulators could over-reach or enact poorly designed regulations that would hurt growth, and that is a risk worth monitoring.”\n“The continued lack of regulation and enforcement of intermediaries, promoters, and institutional traders is a disservice for bitcoin and its potential growth and acceptance,” Schatzow added. “Some people think regulation will hurt its prospects, but without a viable regulator of market participants, the market is susceptible to manipulation.”\nOther digital assets– It may have taken bitcoin more than a decade to be taken seriously by establishment institutions, but as it gains momentum, developers are working hard cryptocurrencies we’ve never even heard of that might become more dominant than bitcoin for one reason or another. “Development of alternative digital assets, currencies, and technologies are happening at supersonic speeds,” Schatzow said. “No one can predict whether Bitcoin will be the choice digital currency or store of value for the future. If people collectively decide that another digital currency or store of value is better, it could hurt bitcoin’s prospects. It seems remote now given Bitcoin’s staying power, but this is a nascent industry and don’t discount what happened to AOL.”\nPortfolio sizing\nAdvisors say bitcoin should be a complementary play, not a competitive one. Having an outsized position in bitcoin carries a lot of risks and investors need to size their allocation accordingly. ”[Bitcoin] can fall 50% in a very short period of time,” Hougan said. “If you have 1% to 5% of your portfolio invested in bitcoin, that’s not so bad. But if you have 50% of your portfolio invested in bitcoin, that can be very, very tough. Position sizing is key.”","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":194,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":112637374,"gmtCreate":1622865226798,"gmtModify":1631892138403,"author":{"id":"3573606104770883","authorId":"3573606104770883","name":"Bliang","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0d7cd18997f43a1b7035c0207a1c5872","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573606104770883","authorIdStr":"3573606104770883"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Is this good news?","listText":"Is this good news?","text":"Is this good news?","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":0,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/112637374","repostId":"1160563289","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1160563289","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1622864224,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1160563289?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-06-05 11:37","market":"us","language":"en","title":"FTSE Russell removed GameStop from the small-cap index","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1160563289","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"FTSE Russell removed GameStop from the small-cap index, with Tesla and JPMorgan among the top 10 in ","content":"
FTSE Russell removed GameStop from the small-cap index, with Tesla and JPMorgan among the top 10 in the Russell U.S. index.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 179.35 points to 34,756.39. The Nasdaq Composite outperformed with a nearly 1.5% rally to 13,814.49.\nThe major averages all registered modest gains for the week. The blue-chip Dow and the S&P 500 advanced about 0.7% and 0.6%, respectively, on the week for their second straight positive week. The tech-heavy Nasdaq gained just shy of 0.5% this week for its third winning week in a row.\nThe U.S. economy added 559,000 jobs in May, the Labor Department said on Friday. The number came in slightly lower than an estimate of 671,000 from economists surveyed by Dow Jones, but still showed a healthy rebound in the labor market. It’s an improvement from the upwardly revised 278,000 payrolls added in April.\nThe unemployment rate fell to 5.8% from 6.1%, which was better than the estimate of 5.9%. Many believe the jobs report, while solid, is not strong enough to trigger the Federal Reserve to dial back its bond buying program.\nThe jobs number is “goldilocks for risk,” said John Briggs, global head of strategy at NatWest Markets. It’s “not too hot to bring in the Fed and not too cold to worry about the economy.”\nThe 10-year Treasury yield dipped slightly following the jobs report. Bond yields had jumped higher in recent months amid rising inflation expectations.\n“While the job gains were somewhat modest relative to expectations, the good news is the figure rebounded from last month’s disappointing miss,” said Charlie Ripley, vice president of portfolio management at Allianz Investment Management. “Overall, today’s report does provide progress in the right direction.”\nMeme stocks continued their wild prices swings on Friday, but this time to the downside. AMC Entertainment ended the session down about 6.7%, but still gained more than 80% this week. The theater company said it would use the funds for potential acquisitions, upgrading its theaters and deleveraging its balance sheet.Shares were up 22.6% when the market closed. On Tuesday afternoon, Bloomberg News reported that Mudrick had sold all of its new shares in AMC. The stock fell from its highs of the day following the report.AMC’s business was effectively halted during the pandemic, with movie theaters shut in most of the country for months and major studios delaying releases during the pandemic. However, the stock becamea favorite of traders on Redditand has seen wild swings in recent months. The sharesdoubled last weekon incredibly high volume as the speculative activity by retail traders driven by message board chats ramped back up once again. The company has taken advantage of those price surges by selling additional shares to raise cash. The stock is up more than 1,000% year to date.“Given that AMC is raising hundreds of millions of dollars, this is an extremely positive result for our shareholders,” CEO and President Adam Aron said in a filing. “It was achieved through the issuance of only 8.5 million shares, representing less than 1.7% of our issued share capital and only a small portion of our typical daily trading volume.”The dramatic price swings could also be due to ashort squeezein the stock, which is caused by traders who have bet against the stock buying shares to limit their losses. Roughly 20% of the floated shares of the company are sold short, according to S3 Partners.AMC has around $5 billion in debt and needed to defer $450 million in lease repayments as its revenue largely dried up during the pandemic. Theaters were closed for months to help stop the spread of the virus, and when the company reopened its doors, few consumers felt comfortable attending screenings, and movie studios held back new releases. Now, as vaccination rates rise and the number of coronavirus cases decline, consumer confidence in returning to movie theaters has spiked. Not to mention, studios are finally releasing new content.Over the weekend, John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place Part II,” the sequel to his 2018 blockbuster, garnered $48.4 million over Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the highest three-day haul of any film release during the pandemic. For the full four-day Memorial Day weekend, the North American box office tallied nearly $100 million in ticket sales.Still, while initial box-office receipts are promising, fundamental elements of the movie theater business have changed in the last year, including theater capacity, shared release dates with streaming services and the number of days that movies play in theaters. The securities filing from AMC, which closed Friday with a $11.8 billion market cap, also has a risk warning for investors: “Our market capitalization, as implied by various trading prices, currently reflects valuations that diverge significantly from those seen prior to recent volatility and that are significantly higher than our market capitalization immediately prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, and to the extent these valuations reflect trading dynamics unrelated to our financial performance or prospects, purchasers of our Class A common stock could incur substantial losses if there are declines in market prices driven by a return to earlier valuations.”","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":150,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":110785699,"gmtCreate":1622504534711,"gmtModify":1631892138411,"author":{"id":"3573606104770883","authorId":"3573606104770883","name":"Bliang","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0d7cd18997f43a1b7035c0207a1c5872","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573606104770883","authorIdStr":"3573606104770883"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good","listText":"Good","text":"Good","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/110785699","repostId":"1197301052","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":367,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":137616223,"gmtCreate":1622342672762,"gmtModify":1631892138414,"author":{"id":"3573606104770883","authorId":"3573606104770883","name":"Bliang","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0d7cd18997f43a1b7035c0207a1c5872","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573606104770883","authorIdStr":"3573606104770883"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Wow","listText":"Wow","text":"Wow","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/137616223","repostId":"1188611521","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":200,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":135237786,"gmtCreate":1622164791845,"gmtModify":1631892138417,"author":{"id":"3573606104770883","authorId":"3573606104770883","name":"Bliang","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0d7cd18997f43a1b7035c0207a1c5872","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573606104770883","authorIdStr":"3573606104770883"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good","listText":"Good","text":"Good","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":3,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/135237786","repostId":"1148985369","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":317,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"hots":[{"id":346746672,"gmtCreate":1618118256597,"gmtModify":1634294808927,"author":{"id":"3573606104770883","authorId":"3573606104770883","name":"Bliang","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0d7cd18997f43a1b7035c0207a1c5872","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573606104770883","authorIdStr":"3573606104770883"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Rising","listText":"Rising","text":"Rising","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":7,"commentSize":3,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/346746672","repostId":"1142324412","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":209,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":358400569,"gmtCreate":1616719699451,"gmtModify":1634524394494,"author":{"id":"3573606104770883","authorId":"3573606104770883","name":"Bliang","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/0d7cd18997f43a1b7035c0207a1c5872","crmLevel":4,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3573606104770883","authorIdStr":"3573606104770883"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Great for fede","content":"
The ETFMG Alternative Harvest ETF is down 26.3% in the last three months as efforts to push for federal U.S. cannabis legalization haven’t progressed as quickly in Washington, D.C. during the early innings of the Joe Biden administration as some investors had hoped.
\n
Bank of America analyst Heather Balsky said Monday that significant steps in the cannabis legalization process may be just around the corner.
\n
SAFE Act Update:Balsky said the SAFE Banking Act, which would allow U.S. banks to service cannabis companies in states that have legalized cannabis, appears to be gaining steam in Congress, even among Republicans. The bill recently passed in the House of Representatives for the third time.
\n
It has eight Republican co-sponsors in the Senate, and Balsky said she believes it has enough bipartisan support to pass. At this point, Balsky said the biggest question for the SAFE Act is just how long Democrat and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer will wait to put the SAFE Act to a vote. She predicts the SAFE Act will be put to a vote by late 2021 or early 2022.
\n
In the meantime, House Republicans David Joyce and Don Young recently introduced legislation to remove cannabis from the federal Controlled Substances Act. The bill recently passed in the House of Representatives for the third time.\nIt has eight Republican co-sponsors in the Senate, and Balsky said she believes it has enough bipartisan support to pass. At this point, Balsky said the biggest question for the SAFE Act is just how long Democrat and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer will wait to put the SAFE Act to a vote. She predicts the SAFE Act will be put to a vote by late 2021 or early 2022.\nIn the meantime, House Republicans David Joyce and Don Young recently introduced legislation to remove cannabis from the federal Controlled Substances Act. Ballsy said the Republican-sponsored legalization bill is unlikely to pass at this point, but it is an important symbol that legalization is becoming a bipartisan issue.\nBWS Bill Dead In The Water?At the same time, Democrats have their own Booker-Widen-Schumer legalization bill that will likely be introduced to the Senate before June. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 179.35 points to 34,756.39. The Nasdaq Composite outperformed with a nearly 1.5% rally to 13,814.49.\nThe major averages all registered modest gains for the week. The blue-chip Dow and the S&P 500 advanced about 0.7% and 0.6%, respectively, on the week for their second straight positive week. The tech-heavy Nasdaq gained just shy of 0.5% this week for its third winning week in a row.\nThe U.S. economy added 559,000 jobs in May, the Labor Department said on Friday. The number came in slightly lower than an estimate of 671,000 from economists surveyed by Dow Jones, but still showed a healthy rebound in the labor market. It’s an improvement from the upwardly revised 278,000 payrolls added in April.\nThe unemployment rate fell to 5.8% from 6.1%, which was better than the estimate of 5.9%. Many believe the jobs report, while solid, is not strong enough to trigger the Federal Reserve to dial back its bond buying program.\nThe jobs number is “goldilocks for risk,” said John Briggs, global head of strategy at NatWest Markets. It’s “not too hot to bring in the Fed and not too cold to worry about the economy.”\nThe 10-year Treasury yield dipped slightly following the jobs report. Bond yields had jumped higher in recent months amid rising inflation expectations.\n“While the job gains were somewhat modest relative to expectations, the good news is the figure rebounded from last month’s disappointing miss,” said Charlie Ripley, vice president of portfolio management at Allianz Investment Management. “Overall, today’s report does provide progress in the right direction.”\nMeme stocks continued their wild prices swings on Friday, but this time to the downside. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., the chair of the Senate Judiciary subcommittee on antitrust at a hearing Wednesday.The hearing brought together representatives from Apple with Google and several of their most outspoken critics, includingMatch Group, which owns dating site Tinder; Tile, which makes devices that help users find lost objects and faces new competition fromApple’s AirTag technology; and streaming music serviceSpotify.The hearing comes as lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are working on updates to the antitrust laws that could better account for the power a few tech giants hold over many digital markets. That includes the ability of platforms like Apple and Google to manage the main distribution platform for apps while increasingly hawking their own competitors.Throughout the hearing, the app makers expressed fear over how easily either company could undercut their businesses by making small changes to their app store rules. They also complained of high fees for in-app purchases and unclear enforcement of standards.Allegations of threatsMultiple executives accused Apple and Google of threatening their businesses.Sine said Google called Match Group on Tuesday night after his testimony became public to ask why his testimony differed from the company’s comments in their latest earnings call.On the earnings call, Match executives had said they believed they were having productive conversations about Google’s 30% in-app payment fee through its Google Play store. But in testimony, Match complained that Google had made “false pretenses of an open platform” and complained about its “monopoly power.”Google Senior Director of Public Policy and Government Relations Wilson White said it sounded like employees working in Google’s business development team reached out to ask an “honest question.” Wilson said he didn’t view it as a threat “and we would never threaten our partners” because Google needs app developers to use its app store in order for it to be successful.Sen. Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., said the call was “potentially actionable.”Klobuchar said she planned to look into the matter further.Spotify Chief Legal Officer Horacio Gutierrez said he could think of “at least four clear examples of threats and retaliation” from Apple after Spotify decided to speak out about alleged anticompetitive behavior and Apple’s fees for developers on digital products purchased through its platform. That included threats of removing Spotify’s app, refusing to promote it, or waiting for months for minor app updates to be approved, he claimed.“They’ve basically thrown the book at us in order to make it hard for us to continue to sustain our decision to speak up,” he said.Fees and rival productsMany app makers have complained about the fees gatekeepers charge for in-app purchases for digital services.Gutierrez complained of what he called Apple’s “gag order” over how it can communicate with its own users about how to upgrade to its paid version.For instance, Spotify allows customers to upgrade only outside of its iOS app in order to avoid Apple’s 15% to 30% commission fee on digital services purchased through its platform. But because Spotify doesn’t sell the paid service through its iOS app, Apple also doesn’t let the app maker talk about upgrades with customers through the app -- instead, users have to upgrade through a web browser on a PC or another method.At the same time, Apple operates a competing service, Apple Music, which has no such restrictions. Gutierrez claimed this gives Apple’s version an unfair advantage.Representatives from Apple and Google both told lawmakers that their fees for developers are meant to cover the costs that go into distributing apps through their platforms and securing them appropriately. Apple Chief Compliance Officer Kyle Andeer compared the services offered on the App Store today to the cumbersome and expensive process app makers had to pursue to distribute their apps before the App Store existed.White cast the group as a set of “small but vocal” voices of “primarily large companies.” He said he worried that in trying to satisfy their complaints, “we damage the very foundation that has allowed the Android open source ecosystem to work so well for a much larger set of small and medium-sized businesses.”In addition to complaints about fees, developers worried that Apple’s own rival products incentivized it to make unfavorable decisions toward them.For example, Tile General Counsel Kirsten Daru said the company had asked Apple for permission to use ultra-wideband (UWB) technology on iPhones to make its item-tracking technology more precise than it can be using only Bluetooth. She said Apple had refused the request, then reserved the technology for its own competitiveAirTags, which it announced on Tuesday.While Apple is rolling out a way for third-party developers to build on the more precise location data, Daru said that in other to access that, “we have to give Apple unprecedented control over our business and directed customers to the Find My app to find their lost items.”Andeer argued AirTags is a separate product from Tile, which currently has majority of the market share for the space, and that opening tools to more third-party developers will encourage competition.Unclear standardsApp makers also complained that Apple’s enforcement of its app store rules can appear arbitrary and delay the launch of key features. Apple may tell developers which rule they’ve violated, but not exactly how or what to do to fix it, Sine said.He said Tinder had tried to submit a version of its app with a feature aimed at protecting its LGBTQ+ users by notifying them when they were in a country where they could be at risk of exposing their sexuality or gender identity. Sine said that it took two months and a conversation between top executives of Match Group’s ownerIACand Apple to sort out the issue.An exchange between subcommittee Ranking Member Mike Lee, R-Utah, and Andeer revealed how complex Apple’s App Store rules can be.Lee asked Andeer to differentiate between why a paid service through Tinder might incur a commission while one for Uber would not. Andeer explained an Uber customer is paying for a non-digital service — a car to show up to their house — while they don’t expect the same return from Tinder, saying that would be a different service, in what appeared to be a insinuation of sex work.The app makers emphasized their reliance on the app stores because of their unprecedented access to consumers. But, they argued, it’s not the symbiotic relationship that Apple and Google like to paint.“We are not successful because of what Apple has done, we have been successful despite Apple’s interference,” Gutierrez said. “And we would have been much more successful but for their anticompetitive behavior.”","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":103,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0}],"lives":[]}
