week's bigger IPOs.
\n

\n

\n
After a flurry of initial-public-offering launches last week set the market up for a busy fall for deals, 11 are expected to price this week and raise more than $3 billion in proceeds.
\n

\n
If all deals materialize, it will make 2021 the biggest year for IPO proceeds ever, and shatter the previous record by about 30%, according to Bill Smith, founder and chief executive of Renaissance Capital, a provider of institutional research and exchange-traded funds oriented around IPOs. The market is expected to see some 375 deals for the year, raising $125 billion, according to Renaissance, beating the $97 billion raised in 2000 during the dot-com boom.
\n

\n
“After the long summer break, this week is a litmus test for upcoming tech, biotech, and consumer IPOs,” Smith wrote in a market commentary. The list includes a Swiss running-shoe company backed by tennis giant Roger Federer, a drive-through coffee kiosk operator and a mortgage insurer that was spun out of insurer Genworth Financial.
\n

\n
The biggest deal of the week is expected to come from Thoughtworks,a Chicago-based technology consultancy that will go public at a valuation of up to $6.1 billion.
\n
The company, which expects to change its name from Turing Holding Corp. to Thoughtworks with completion of the IPO, said a total of 36.84 million shares will be offered, split between the company and selling shareholders.
\n

\n
The deal is expected to price at between $18 and $20 a share, and the stock will trade on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “TWKS.” Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan are the lead underwriters. The company recorded net income of $79.3 million on revenue of $803.4 million in 2020, after income of $28.4 million on revenue of $772.2 million in 2019.
\n
The Swiss athletic-footwear maker On Holding is expected to raise up to $622 million at a valuation of almost $6 billion. On has applied to list 31.1 million shares priced at $18 to $20 each on the New York Stock Exchange, under the ticker symbol “ONON.”
\n

\n
Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and Morgan Stanley are lead underwriters in a syndicate of nine banks on the On deal. Proceeds are to be used for general corporate purposes. The company has a line that it co-developed with Federer.
\n

\n
The company had net income of 3.8 million Swiss francs ($4.1 million) in the six months through June 30, after a loss of 33.1 million francs in the year-earlier period, according to its IPO documents. Sales came to 315.5 million francs, up from 170.9 million francs.
\n

\n
Also from Switzerland, sports betting site Sportrader Group AG plans to offer 19 million shares priced at $25 to $28 each, for a valuation of up to $31 billion. The company has applied to list on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “SRAD.” JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup and UBS are lead underwriters in a syndicate of 13 banks working on the deal.
\n

\n
Proceeds are to be used for working capital and to spur growth. The company had a net profit of $29.9 million in the first six months of the year, on revenue of $321 million, according to its filing documents.
\n

\n
Dutch Bros Inc.,an operator of drive-through shops that serve hot and cold drinks mostly in western U.S. states, is planning to offer 21.1 million shares priced at $18 to $20 each in its IPO, valuing the company at up to $3.3 billion.
\n

\n
BofA Securities, JPMorgan and Jefferies are lead underwriters in a syndicate of 13 banks working on the deal. The market is expected to see some 375 deals for the year, raising $125 billion, according to Renaissance, beating the $97 billion raised in 2000 during the dot-com boom. \n\n“After the long summer break, this week is a litmus test for upcoming tech, biotech, and consumer IPOs,” Smith wrote in a market commentary. The list includes a Swiss running-shoe company backed by tennis giant Roger Federer, a drive-through coffee kiosk operator and a mortgage insurer that was spun out of insurer Genworth Financial. \n\nThe biggest deal of the week is expected to come from Thoughtworks,a Chicago-based technology consultancy that will go public at a valuation of up to $6.1 billion.\nThe company, which expects to change its name from Turing Holding Corp. to Thoughtworks with completion of the IPO, said a total of 36.84 million shares will be offered, split between the company and selling shareholders.\n\nThe deal is expected to price at between $18 and $20 a share, and the stock will trade on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “TWKS.” Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan are the lead underwriters. The company recorded net income of $79.3 million on revenue of $803.4 million in 2020, after income of $28.4 million on revenue of $772.2 million in 2019.\nThe Swiss athletic-footwear maker On Holding is expected to raise up to $622 million at a valuation of almost $6 billion. On has applied to list 31.1 million shares priced at $18 to $20 each on the New York Stock Exchange, under the ticker symbol “ONON.”\n\nGoldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and Morgan Stanley are lead underwriters in a syndicate of nine banks on the On deal. Proceeds are to be used for general corporate purposes. The company has a line that it co-developed with Federer.\n\nThe company had net income of 3.8 million Swiss francs ($4.1 million) in the six months through June 30, after a loss of 33.1 million francs in the year-earlier period, according to its IPO documents. Sales came to 315.5 million francs, up from 170.9 million francs.\n\nAlso from Switzerland, sports betting site Sportrader Group AG plans to offer 19 million shares priced at $25 to $28 each, for a valuation of up to $31 billion. The company has applied to list on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol “SRAD.” JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, Citigroup and UBS are lead underwriters in a syndicate of 13 banks working on the deal.\n\nProceeds are to be used for working capital and to spur growth. The company had a net profit of $29.9 million in the first six months of the year, on revenue of $321 million, according to its filing documents.\n\nDutch Bros Inc.,an operator of drive-through shops that serve hot and cold drinks mostly in western U.S. states, is planning to offer 21.1 million shares priced at $18 to $20 each in its IPO, valuing the company at up to $3.3 billion.\n\nBofA Securities, JPMorgan and Jefferies are lead underwriters in a syndicate of 13 banks working on the deal. But even with strong buying power, Apple is grappling with the same supply disruptions that have wreaked havoc on industries around the world. Major chipmakers have warned that demand will continue to outpace supply throughout next year and potentially beyond.
\n
Apple gets display parts from Texas Instruments, while Broadcom is its longtime supplier of wireless components. One TI chip in short supply for the latest iPhones is related to powering the OLED display. Apple also is facing component shortages from other suppliers.
\n
Apple and TI representatives declined to comment. Broadcom didn’t respond to a request for comment.
\n

\n
Apple shares slipped as much as 1.6% to $139.27 in late trading after Bloomberg reported on the news. The stock was up 6.6% this year through Tuesday’s close. Broadcom and TI also dipped in after-hours trading.
\n
The shortages have already weighed on Apple’s ability to ship new models to customers. The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max went on sale in September, but orders won’t be delivered from Apple’s website for about a month. And the new devices are listed as “currently unavailable” for pickup at several of the company’s retail stores. Apple’s carrier partners are also seeing similar shipment delays.
\n
Current orders are slated to ship around mid-November, so Apple could still get the new iPhones to consumers in time for the crucial holiday season. The year-end quarter is expected to be Apple’s biggest sales blitz yet, generating about $120 billion in revenue. That would be up about 7% from a year earlier -- and more money than Apple made in an entire year a decade ago.
\n
Apple’s woes show that even the king of the tech world isn’t immune from global shortages made worse by the pandemic. In addition to facing tight iPhone availability, the company has struggled to make enough of the Apple Watch Series 7 and other products.
\n
Earlier this year, Apple warned that it would face supply constraints of the iPhone and iPad during the quarter that ended in September. The Cupertino, California-based company cited the global chip shortages at the time. That period included about a week and a half of iPhone 13 revenue.
\n
Broadcom doesn’t have major factories of its own and relies on contract chipmakers like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. to build its products. Texas Instruments makes some chips in-house, but also relies on outside manufacturing. We have argued that the North Star in this current equity regime is an expansion of the profits cycle. The challenge in this period has become the start-stop-and-start-again motion of the reopening as the complexities of COVID/supply chain events warp a traditional profits rebound.
\n

\n
We continue to make a case for investing in higher quality firms to better navigate this moment while limiting exposure to innovation firms to reduce risk. Secular highs in the valuation of innovation shares are a source of risk as interest rates reverse course and Fed-watching returns to prime time viewing.
\n
Investors will shift their gaze again to a tapering tantrum. In this back and forth state of COVID-on, COVID-off, chasing the tails of the tape will leave investors tired as they frantically recalibrate their portfolios. The focus on higher quality with a valuation bias should offer the best path forward as investors weigh the chances of Yet Another Reopening Trade.
\n
This see-saw action between weaker-than-expected inflation and liquidity-driven reflation fears has drained investors this cycle as we head into a likely choppy fourth quarter. As the global economy has started to reopen, albeit in a mixed fashion, sales growth in the U.S. has rebounded to a solid 7.4% year over year with the latest reporting.
\n
In other words, the early stage gains are most likely behind us. We have argued that the North Star in this current equity regime is an expansion of the profits cycle. The challenge in this period has become the start-stop-and-start-again motion of the reopening as the complexities of COVID/supply chain events warp a traditional profits rebound.\n\nWe continue to make a case for investing in higher quality firms to better navigate this moment while limiting exposure to innovation firms to reduce risk. Secular highs in the valuation of innovation shares are a source of risk as interest rates reverse course and Fed-watching returns to prime time viewing.\nInvestors will shift their gaze again to a tapering tantrum. In this back and forth state of COVID-on, COVID-off, chasing the tails of the tape will leave investors tired as they frantically recalibrate their portfolios. The focus on higher quality with a valuation bias should offer the best path forward as investors weigh the chances of Yet Another Reopening Trade.\nThis see-saw action between weaker-than-expected inflation and liquidity-driven reflation fears has drained investors this cycle as we head into a likely choppy fourth quarter. As the global economy has started to reopen, albeit in a mixed fashion, sales growth in the U.S. has rebounded to a solid 7.4% year over year with the latest reporting.\nIn other words, the early stage gains are most likely behind us. Investors should position for continued expansion and look to firms with higher profit margin and better balance sheets .\nImportantly, high quality firms remain notably discounted as investors ignored basics such as margins and balance sheets to chase after liquidity-driven, innovation-centric names during the lock-down. The Singapore-based company's digital entertainment wing, Garena, is anchored by the video game Free Fire --a monster hit in Asia. In the second quarter, active players of its titles grew by 45% year over year to a massive 725 million souls, and more people are paying for in-game goodies to give themselves a competitive edge -- the number of quarterly paying users advanced at an even faster 85% pace to over 92 million.
\n
Where users go, the money follows. Sea's total revenue for digital entertainment was just under $1 billion in Q2 alone, a mighty 167% higher than in the same quarter last year. That was on the back of total bookings that rose by 65% to $1.2 billion.
\n
Sea also has Shopee, a thriving e-commerce operation. On the back of the Shopee app, which the company says is the No. 1 retail app in Southeast Asia, revenue is pouring in for this business. It drew $1.2 billion during the quarter, up a whopping 161% year over year, with gross merchandise value clocking in 88% higher at $15 billion.
\n
Both business segments should continue to do gangbusters business. When it delivered its Q2 report, the company raised its full-year guidance for both segments; it's anticipating 44% growth over 2020 for digital entertainment, and nearly 122% for e-commerce.
\n
At the moment, the third leg of the business, a digital financial services arm SeaMoney, is a relative blip in terms of standalone revenue. However, the company said the unit's total payment volume in Q2 was over $4.1 billion, a nearly 150% year-over-year rise. We can imagine that number will grow considerably given how SeaMoney is integrated with Garena and Shopee.
\n
Sea isn't yet profitable. In fact, its net loss deepened in Q2 to more than $433 million. However, like many of the best tech companies did at similar life stages, it's spending money to make money -- basically sacrificing near-term profitability for longer-term growth. Since its growth rates are robust and highly impressive, this feels like a smart strategy that will pay off in the coming years.
\n
\n
Capitalize on this massive digital media trend
\n
Keith Noonan(Unity Software):Video games stand above pretty much every other entertainment medium when it comes to engagement. In an era where the \"attention economy\" has never been more important, and keeping audiences captivated opens up cross-platform opportunities and synergies, it's no stretch to say that the future of entertainment is interactive.
\n
Unity Software is best known as a company that provides a development engine for building video games. In addition to its core engine, Unity also provides pre-made assets that developers can plug into their creations. The company's software can also be used to create experiences outside of the traditional gaming space.
\n
There's a good chance that tech trends including augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) will make digital browsing and shopping more interactive and game-like, and Unity will pave the way. Let's say a clothing company wants to launch a shopping experience tailored for an AR or VR interface. They could spend the time and money building their software from the ground up and wind up with highly customized code. Or, they could take what would likely be a much more cost-effective route and opt to use Unity's flexible engine and assets.
\n
Opting for existing development engines or platforms will be an easy choice for most businesses looking to create digital experiences, and Cathie Wood is betting big on the future of Unity. The software company currently stands as the fourth-largest stock holding across her ARK Invest funds, and the business is showing impressive momentum. Revenue surged by 48% year over year last quarter, and investors can look forward to more big growth.
\n
With the company sporting a market capitalization of roughly $41 billion and valued at approximately 39 times this year's expected earnings, the market has already priced in some strong performance, but the stock could go on to be a big winner for patient investors. At various times, she has picked up Sea Limited,Unity Software, and Tesla -- and according to three of our Motley Fool contributors, you might want to follow her lead and buy those stocks yourself right now.\nIMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.\nA potentially huge wave that's yet to crest\nEric Volkman (Sea Limited):Budding tech conglomerate Sea Limited is well-positioned to be a powerhouse, as it has not one, not two, but a trio of fast-growing business segments.\nEach of the three is in a red-hot area of the tech sector. The Singapore-based company's digital entertainment wing, Garena, is anchored by the video game Free Fire --a monster hit in Asia. In the second quarter, active players of its titles grew by 45% year over year to a massive 725 million souls, and more people are paying for in-game goodies to give themselves a competitive edge -- the number of quarterly paying users advanced at an even faster 85% pace to over 92 million.\nWhere users go, the money follows. Sea's total revenue for digital entertainment was just under $1 billion in Q2 alone, a mighty 167% higher than in the same quarter last year. That was on the back of total bookings that rose by 65% to $1.2 billion.\nSea also has Shopee, a thriving e-commerce operation. On the back of the Shopee app, which the company says is the No. 1 retail app in Southeast Asia, revenue is pouring in for this business. It drew $1.2 billion during the quarter, up a whopping 161% year over year, with gross merchandise value clocking in 88% higher at $15 billion.\nBoth business segments should continue to do gangbusters business. When it delivered its Q2 report, the company raised its full-year guidance for both segments; it's anticipating 44% growth over 2020 for digital entertainment, and nearly 122% for e-commerce.\nAt the moment, the third leg of the business, a digital financial services arm SeaMoney, is a relative blip in terms of standalone revenue. However, the company said the unit's total payment volume in Q2 was over $4.1 billion, a nearly 150% year-over-year rise. We can imagine that number will grow considerably given how SeaMoney is integrated with Garena and Shopee.\nSea isn't yet profitable. In fact, its net loss deepened in Q2 to more than $433 million. However, like many of the best tech companies did at similar life stages, it's spending money to make money -- basically sacrificing near-term profitability for longer-term growth. Since its growth rates are robust and highly impressive, this feels like a smart strategy that will pay off in the coming years.\nIMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.\nCapitalize on this massive digital media trend\nKeith Noonan(Unity Software):Video games stand above pretty much every other entertainment medium when it comes to engagement. In an era where the \"attention economy\" has never been more important, and keeping audiences captivated opens up cross-platform opportunities and synergies, it's no stretch to say that the future of entertainment is interactive.\nUnity Software is best known as a company that provides a development engine for building video games. In addition to its core engine, Unity also provides pre-made assets that developers can plug into their creations. The company's software can also be used to create experiences outside of the traditional gaming space.\nThere's a good chance that tech trends including augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) will make digital browsing and shopping more interactive and game-like, and Unity will pave the way. Let's say a clothing company wants to launch a shopping experience tailored for an AR or VR interface. They could spend the time and money building their software from the ground up and wind up with highly customized code. Or, they could take what would likely be a much more cost-effective route and opt to use Unity's flexible engine and assets.\nOpting for existing development engines or platforms will be an easy choice for most businesses looking to create digital experiences, and Cathie Wood is betting big on the future of Unity.
