The company unveiled its electric F-150 Lightning truck last month and also told investors that it now expects electric vehicles to account for 40% of global sales by 2030.</p>\n<p>And GM (GM) is up more than 40% as well. The Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac maker said this month that it's looking to spend a whopping $35 billion on EVs by 2025.</p>\n<p>It seems investors are a bit infatuated with these legacy Big 3 automakers as they look to rapidly expand their electric car offerings to catch up with Tesla.</p>\n<p>Tesla is still growing incredibly quickly. Analysts expect earnings per share to more than double this year and increase at an average rate of about 45% annually over the next few years.</p>\n<p>Yet Tesla is one of the most polarizing stocks on Wall Street.</p>\n<p>According to Refinitiv, 14 analysts have the stock rated a \"buy,\" 13 a \"hold\" and 10 a \"sell.\" Contrast that with GM, which has 20 buy ratings, two holds and no sells.</p>\n<p><b>Skeptics have many questions about Tesla and Musk</b></p>\n<p>The consensus target price for Tesla stock from analysts is $652, about 6% lower than its current price.</p>\n<p>Tesla critics have a pile of worries to point to. A notable short seller who was featured in \"The Big Short\" is betting against the company. Concerns about Tesla's management bench sprung up after longtime executive Jerome Guillen abruptly left earlier this month — especially since CEO Elon Musk is also busy running SpaceX.</p>\n<p>And Musk's obsession with bitcoin and dogecoin, along with other extracurricular activities like hosting Saturday Night Live and constantly tweeting, might be a turnoff for some investors and analysts.</p>\n<p>Still, there is no denying that the company has plenty of ardent fans, and its vehicles have grabbed plenty of positive headlines this week alone.</p>\n<p>For example, Cars.com (CARS) announced earlier this week that Tesla's Model 3 was ranked first in its American-Made Index, which measures how much a vehicle contributes to the US economy based on factors such as domestic factory jobs, manufacturing plants and parts sourcing.</p>\n<p>The Model 3 edged out Ford's Mustang for the top spot, and Tesla's Model Y also ranked third on the list. Analysts expect earnings per share to more than double this year and increase at an average rate of about 45% annually over the next few years.\nYet Tesla is one of the most polarizing stocks on Wall Street.\nAccording to Refinitiv, 14 analysts have the stock rated a \"buy,\" 13 a \"hold\" and 10 a \"sell.\" Contrast that with GM, which has 20 buy ratings, two holds and no sells.\nSkeptics have many questions about Tesla and Musk\nThe consensus target price for Tesla stock from analysts is $652, about 6% lower than its current price.\nTesla critics have a pile of worries to point to. A notable short seller who was featured in \"The Big Short\" is betting against the company. In just one month, that percentage has climbed to&nbsp; 31%. Why? Last week, the Fed bumped up its time line for its next projected rate hike significantly. The Fed went from expecting no rate hikes until at least 2024 to projecting two hikes in 2023.</p>\n<p>The timing and pace of Fed interest rate hikes most certainly hinges on whether or not the 3.4% inflation rate the Fed projects for 2021 is temporary. It’s unlikely the Fed will pull the trigger on an interest rate hike any time soon. But the sooner and the higher interest rates start rising, the worse it is for TSLA stock.</p>\n<p><b>How Interest Rates Matter for TSLA Stock</b></p>\n<p>Barron’s writerAl Rootrecently penned a concise explanation of why higher interest rates are worse news for growth stocks than the rest of the market. In a nutshell, growth companies generate a higher percentage of their cash flow years into the future. Higher interest rates mean future cash is worth less in today’s dollars in part because investors have an opportunity to earn higher returns from assets paying interest and dividends today.</p>\n<p>As of March, analysts were projecting Tesla to generate $2 billion in cash flow in 2021 and $42 billion by 2030.</p>\n<p>By utilizing the discounted cash flow valuation method, Root calculated that each 1% rise in interest rates today would hurt Tesla’s valuation by about $200 billion. Based on Tesla’s current $601 billion market cap, a 1% rise in interest rates would correlate to about 33% downside for Tesla’s stock.</p>\n<p><b>Analyst Take</b></p>\n<p>InFebruary 2012, Tesla CEO ElonMuskmade a bold declaration about Tesla’s financial situation.</p>\n<p>“Tesla does not need to ever raise another funding round,” Musk said. “We may want to do so, but we are in a strong cash position, and we don’t need to.”</p>\n<p>Since then, Tesla has completed 14 capital raises, raising a total of more than$22 billion.</p>\n<p>Raising additional capital will be key to Tesla’s ability to grow, according to Bank of America analyst John Murphy:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “It remains to be seen if TSLA can capitalize on their first-mover advantage and stay dominant in the long term. Nevertheless, we continue to believe that as long as the company can fund outsized growth (new model introductions, capacity installation, etc.) with little to no cost of capital, as it has over the past decade plus, its high stock price will be justified.”\n</blockquote>\n<p>Cost of capital is a key concern, however. If Tesla continues to find investors to buy shares of stock, it can just continue to complete equity offerings. It’s easy enough to raise capital by diluting current shareholders. However, if it has to sell bonds to raise money, interest rates matter a lot. The interest paid on those bonds can get very costly if rates continue to rise.</p>\n<p>Like Murphy, I gave up a long time ago on predicting where TSLA stock is headed next. In just one month, that percentage has climbed to  31%. Why? Last week, the Fed bumped up its time line for its next projected rate hike significantly. The Fed went from expecting no rate hikes until at least 2024 to projecting two hikes in 2023.\nThe timing and pace of Fed interest rate hikes most certainly hinges on whether or not the 3.4% inflation rate the Fed projects for 2021 is temporary. It’s unlikely the Fed will pull the trigger on an interest rate hike any time soon. But the sooner and the higher interest rates start rising, the worse it is for TSLA stock.\nHow Interest Rates Matter for TSLA Stock\nBarron’s writerAl Rootrecently penned a concise explanation of why higher interest rates are worse news for growth stocks than the rest of the market. In a nutshell, growth companies generate a higher percentage of their cash flow years into the future. Higher interest rates mean future cash is worth less in today’s dollars in part because investors have an opportunity to earn higher returns from assets paying interest and dividends today.\nAs of March, analysts were projecting Tesla to generate $2 billion in cash flow in 2021 and $42 billion by 2030.\nBy utilizing the discounted cash flow valuation method, Root calculated that each 1% rise in interest rates today would hurt Tesla’s valuation by about $200 billion. Based on Tesla’s current $601 billion market cap, a 1% rise in interest rates would correlate to about 33% downside for Tesla’s stock.\nAnalyst Take\nInFebruary 2012, Tesla CEO ElonMuskmade a bold declaration about Tesla’s financial situation.\n“Tesla does not need to ever raise another funding round,” Musk said. “We may want to do so, but we are in a strong cash position, and we don’t need to.”\nSince then, Tesla has completed 14 capital raises, raising a total of more than$22 billion.\nRaising additional capital will be key to Tesla’s ability to grow, according to Bank of America analyst John Murphy:\n\n “It remains to be seen if TSLA can capitalize on their first-mover advantage and stay dominant in the long term. Nevertheless, we continue to believe that as long as the company can fund outsized growth (new model introductions, capacity installation, etc.) with little to no cost of capital, as it has over the past decade plus, its high stock price will be justified.”\n\nCost of capital is a key concern, however. If Tesla continues to find investors to buy shares of stock, it can just continue to complete equity offerings. It’s easy enough to raise capital by diluting current shareholders. However, if it has to sell bonds to raise money, interest rates matter a lot. In 2016, iPhones accounted for 63% of total sales. This was a problem for Apple, and they knew it. The problem existed due to two main factors: first, the smartphone business was mature (with low growth rates); second, it was (and it is) a highly competitive business. I see a lot of ways in which this new generation of iPads can be implemented. However, I also have to admit that there is a big player swimming in the same sea, the new 2-1 Laptops. The new 2-1 Laptops are a very interesting solution for those looking to have the best of the two worlds. In this last view, the iPad segment may represent a lower % of total sales, around 7.8% (vs current 9.1%).</p>\n<p><b>3. Mac</b></p>\n<p>From 2016 to 2020, the Mac segment grew at a CAGR of 5.81%, and also here, as it is for the iPad segment, the Mac segment represents a more or less constant number as % of total sales 10.6% in 2016 vs 10.4% TTM. I personally tried this new generation of Macs and I have to admit, Apple knows very well how to delight its customers. Personal PCs are a highly competitive market and, even if I like and I use Apple products, I prefer to work with a Lenovo.</p>\n<p><b>4. Wearables, Home, and Accessories (WH&amp;A)</b></p>\n<p>The Wearables, Home, and Accessories segment includes sales of AirPods, Apple TV, Apple Watch, Beats products, HomePod, etc. This is where it gets interesting. From 2016 to 2020, the WH&amp;A segment grew at a CAGR of 28.78%, and it changed from representing only 5.2% of total sales in 2016 to represent 10.8% TTM. I present below the growth rate for the WH&amp;A segment over the last 5 years (2016-TTM).</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/e16432a1ae66aa9dda7a4f969a9cfcdf\" tg-width=\"607\" tg-height=\"357\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Source:Author's estimates using data from the latest 10-K report</span></p>\n<p>The WH&amp;A segment is showing a growth rate of 14.7% TTM driven by a strong performance from both Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE. Apple Watch may have a very bright future in the years ahead, driven by Apple entering into the healthcare market. In fact, it can be used to monitor the health status of the person. Imagine you being close to having a heart attack, your Apple Watch may call an ambulance and save your life, not bad no? Finally, let's don't forget also the launch of Apple TV 4K and of the newest accessory, AirTag (I don't see a market for the latter, but I may be wrong).</p>\n<p><b>5. Services</b></p>\n<p>Services include sales from the Company’s advertising, AppleCare, digital content, and other services. From 2016 to 2020, the Services segment grew at a CAGR of 21.9% and it changed from representing 11.3% of total sales in 2016 to represent 18.6% TTM. I present below the growth rate for the Services segment over the last 5 years (2016-TTM).</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/af34eb1ba8fffd690a75318f8cf805f7\" tg-width=\"610\" tg-height=\"363\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Source:Author's estimates using data from the latest 10-K report</span></p>\n<p>To date, the Services segment is showing a growth rate of 12.3% TTM. The growth is driven by App Store, Cloud Services, Music, Advertising, and Payment Services. The new services, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, Apple News+, and Apple Card, are also starting to contribute to overall services growth, and continue to add users, content, and features. I believe that in the future, the Services segment will be the company's dominant segment. Below I present an interesting part I extrapolated from theQ4 earnings call.</p>\n<blockquote>\n <i>First, our installed base continues to grow and is at an all-time high across each major product category. Second, the number of both transacting and paid accounts on our digital content stores reached a new all-time high during the September quarter, with paid accounts increasing double digits in each of our geographic segments.Third, paid subscriptions grew more than 35 million sequentially, and we now have over 585 million paid subscriptions across the services on our platform, up 135 million from just a year ago. With this momentum, we are very confident to reach and exceed our increased target of 600 million paid subscriptions before the end of calendar 2020.</i>\n</blockquote>\n<p><b>Company Analysis</b></p>\n<p>I initiate Apple with a Neutral rating and a fair value of $111.42/share (vs. the current price of $131.7/share). The fair value is an algorithm-adjusted value that accounts for different factors, fundamental and technical (e.g. DCF fair value, Momentum, etc.), and so it takes into consideration the Mr. Market mood. At the same time, the fair value which I obtained through the DCF model is equal to $105.68/share. Now before showing the results, the numbers used as the base are the trailing twelve-month numbers. Moreover, I also restated the financials since I capitalized on R&amp;D expenses with an amortizable life of 3 years. I don't believe that in the case of Apple, R&amp;D is an operating expense and for this reason, I treat it as CapEx. By taking into account the R&amp;D, the following metrics have been restated (all numbers in $mm).</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/f7a2222a8e8b9088e619b0b971193a1f\" tg-width=\"569\" tg-height=\"262\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Source:Author's estimates using data from the latest 10-K report</span></p>\n<p>It is very important to capitalize on R&amp;D expense, if we don't, we are just keeping the company's biggest asset off-balance sheet.</p>\n<p><b>Discounted Cash Flow Model</b></p>\n<p>Now, let's turn to the discounted cash flow valuation part. In the base case scenario, I assume the drivers of growth to be: the iPhone segment (driven by 5G transition), the Services segment (driven by a broader customer base), and the new powered M1 Macs segment. Under this scenario, I assume a Y1 growth rate of 12%, a CAGR Y2-Y5 of 7.1%, and a target operating margin in Y10 of 27%. The DCF fair value under this scenario is $105.68/share.</li>\n <li><i>Best Case Scenario</i>: The business is booming! In the best-case scenario, I see again as the main drivers the one which I described for the base case scenario, however, in addition, I see a greater market penetration in China. Over the last 5 years, we can observe a falling pattern for sales in China, however, this year sales jumped 39.7% (with the iPhone segment rising substantially). Under this scenario, I assume a Y1 growth rate of 14%, a CAGR Y2-Y5 of 9.1%, and a target operating margin in Y10 of 30%. The DCF fair value under this scenario is $130.32/share.</li>\n <li><i>Worst Case Scenario</i>: Well, this is a scenario that I would like to call like \"mature company scenario\". Under this scenario I see Apple growing a little above the growth rate of the economy and for this reason, I assume a Y1 growth rate of 10%, a CAGR Y2-Y5 of 3.1%, and a target operating margin in Y10 of 25%. The DCF fair value under this scenario is $81.03/share.</li>\n</ul>\n<p>Finally, for each scenario, I see Apple entering into the health care market with its Apple Watch. As you can imagine, I assign a different likelihood of market penetration in each of these scenarios.</p>\n<p><b>Sensitivity Analysis</b></p>\n<p>Moreover, I also would like to provide the sensitivity analysis for the base case scenario.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/95f00eba768526d07d68fd846ecf998d\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"462\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Source:Author's estimates using data from the latest 10-K report</span></p>\n<p><b>Technical Analysis</b></p>\n<p>From the technical analysis point of view, I don't see any problem yet. The stock price is in a bullish mode, currently within an ascending triangle pattern. As of right now, the stock price is following its pattern and it is heading to the price target of $137/share or point D, where it is likely to bounce and head back to point E. If this scenario happens, point E is usually the point where stock price bounces once again and from that point, the stock goes higher (it is just a technical analysis assumption, take it as is).</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ecf3e5f45dcb5e30b092c02bbf94d6f9\" tg-width=\"640\" tg-height=\"317\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\"><span>Source:TradingView.com</span></p>\n<p><b>Final Thoughts</b></p>\n<p>Apple is a mature company that is able to see a problem and solve it years ahead. By looking at the fair value, computed under the base case scenario, we can argue that the stock is currently overvalued but not by that much. For what concern risks, the difference between the best-case and the worst-case scenario can be used as a proxy of risk. Taking this into consideration I don't see big reasoning to panic, however, it is also true that I see an upcoming correction for the market. Many indicators, technical and fundamental, are suggesting to me that the market is too heavy right now (even if the S&amp;P500 may go higher, perhaps in the 4400 area). Services\nServices include sales from the Company’s advertising, AppleCare, digital content, and other services. Under this scenario, I assume a Y1 growth rate of 12%, a CAGR Y2-Y5 of 7.1%, and a target operating margin in Y10 of 27%. The DCF fair value under this scenario is $105.68/share.\nBest Case Scenario: The business is booming! In the best-case scenario, I see again as the main drivers the one which I described for the base case scenario, however, in addition, I see a greater market penetration in China. Over the last 5 years, we can observe a falling pattern for sales in China, however, this year sales jumped 39.7% (with the iPhone segment rising substantially). Under this scenario, I assume a Y1 growth rate of 14%, a CAGR Y2-Y5 of 9.1%, and a target operating margin in Y10 of 30%. The DCF fair value under this scenario is $130.32/share.\nWorst Case Scenario: Well, this is a scenario that I would like to call like \"mature company scenario\". Under this scenario I see Apple growing a little above the growth rate of the economy and for this reason, I assume a Y1 growth rate of 10%, a CAGR Y2-Y5 of 3.1%, and a target operating margin in Y10 of 25%. The DCF fair value under this scenario is $81.03/share.\n\nFinally, for each scenario, I see Apple entering into the health care market with its Apple Watch. The stock price is in a bullish mode, currently within an ascending triangle pattern. As of right now, the stock price is following its pattern and it is heading to the price target of $137/share or point D, where it is likely to bounce and head back to point E. By looking at the fair value, computed under the base case scenario, we can argue that the stock is currently overvalued but not by that much. For what concern risks, the difference between the best-case and the worst-case scenario can be used as a proxy of risk. Taking this into consideration I don't see big reasoning to panic, however, it is also true that I see an upcoming correction for the market. Many indicators, technical and fundamental, are suggesting to me that the market is too heavy right now (even if the S&P500 may go higher, perhaps in the 4400 area). Mining harms the environment\nBitcoin mining refers to the energy-intensive process required to produce new coins and ensure the payment network is secure and verified.\nThe electricity used when transactions are validated on the bitcoin blockchain, as well as the mining process, is “certainly not good for the environment,” Prasad said.\nTesla CEO Elon Musk said last month that his electric car company will stop accepting bitcoin as a form of payment because of environmental concerns, causing the price of bitcoin to drop 5% in a matter of minutes.\nHe has since made an about-turn and said in a tweet on Sunday that Tesla will accept bitcoin in transactions if it can confirm “reasonable” and “clean energy usage by miners.”\nCrypto miners use purpose-built computers to solve complex mathematical equations that effectively enable a coin transaction to go through. The miners are rewarded for their efforts by being paid in the cryptocurrency.\nHowever, the entire process used to create a bitcoin requires a lot of energy and can consume more power than entire countries such as Finland and Switzerland, according to the Cambridge Bitcoin Electricity Consumption Index.\nOn the other hand,Ethereum— the second-largest cryptocurrency sometimes viewed as an alternative to bitcoin — is coming up with a different method of mining that requires less energy, Prasad pointed out.\nCalled“proof of stake,”it is the underlying mechanism for ethereum that activates so-called “validators” on the network, if they can prove that they hold ether, or a “stake.”\nUltimately, it should remove the need for vast amounts of computing power needed to validate transactions and the Ethereum Foundation claims it will use 99.95% less energy than before.\n“That is going to be much less energy intensive, and it could deliver a lot of the benefits that bitcoin was supposed to deliver. It could also make transactions much cheaper and quicker,” said Prasad.\nHowever, it’s not there yet, he added.\n2. Not so anonymous after all\nEarlier this month, U.S. law enforcement officials said they were able to recover $2.3 million in bitcoin paid to a criminal cybergroup involved in the ransomware attack on Colonial Pipeline in May.\nThe FBI said its agents were able to identify a virtual currency wallet that the hackers used to collect payment from Colonial Pipeline.\n“The main idea of bitcoin… was to provide pseudonymity,” said Prasad. “But it turns out that if you use bitcoin a lot, and especially if you use Bitcoin to get any real goods and services, then it becomes possible eventually to link your address or your physical identity to your digital identity.”\nWhat’s interesting, he said, is that there are other cryptocurrencies trying to fix this and offer more anonymity. He highlighted Monero and Zcash as some examples.\n“So bitcoin really has set off something of a search for a better alternative and people seem to be on the lookout for a medium of exchange that does not require them to go through a trusted institution like the government or a commercial bank — but it’s not quite there yet,” Prasad said.\n3. Doesn’t work well as a currency\nIn theory, bitcoin was supposed to provide an anonymous and efficient medium of exchange but “it hasn’t worked in that respect,” said the economics professor.\nRather, it’s “slow and cumbersome” to use bitcoin to pay for goods and services, and the market is very volatile, Prasad said.\nBitcoin is prone to wide swings in volatility, as seen by its 30% plunge in a single day last month.\n“So you could take a bitcoin to a store and one day, get a cup of coffee and another day, with the same bitcoin, be able to treat yourself to a lavish meal. But the sooner and the higher interest rates start rising, the worse it is for TSLA stock.</p>\n<p><b>How Interest Rates Matter for TSLA Stock</b></p>\n<p>Barron’s writerAl Rootrecently penned a concise explanation of why higher interest rates are worse news for growth stocks than the rest of the market. In a nutshell, growth companies generate a higher percentage of their cash flow years into the future. Higher interest rates mean future cash is worth less in today’s dollars in part because investors have an opportunity to earn higher returns from assets paying interest and dividends today.</p>\n<p>As of March, analysts were projecting Tesla to generate $2 billion in cash flow in 2021 and $42 billion by 2030.</p>\n<p>By utilizing the discounted cash flow valuation method, Root calculated that each 1% rise in interest rates today would hurt Tesla’s valuation by about $200 billion. Based on Tesla’s current $601 billion market cap, a 1% rise in interest rates would correlate to about 33% downside for Tesla’s stock.</p>\n<p><b>Analyst Take</b></p>\n<p>InFebruary 2012, Tesla CEO ElonMuskmade a bold declaration about Tesla’s financial situation.</p>\n<p>“Tesla does not need to ever raise another funding round,” Musk said. “We may want to do so, but we are in a strong cash position, and we don’t need to.”</p>\n<p>Since then, Tesla has completed 14 capital raises, raising a total of more than$22 billion.</p>\n<p>Raising additional capital will be key to Tesla’s ability to grow, according to Bank of America analyst John Murphy:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “It remains to be seen if TSLA can capitalize on their first-mover advantage and stay dominant in the long term. Nevertheless, we continue to believe that as long as the company can fund outsized growth (new model introductions, capacity installation, etc.) with little to no cost of capital, as it has over the past decade plus, its high stock price will be justified.”\n</blockquote>\n<p>Cost of capital is a key concern, however. If Tesla continues to find investors to buy shares of stock, it can just continue to complete equity offerings. It’s easy enough to raise capital by diluting current shareholders. However, if it has to sell bonds to raise money, interest rates matter a lot. The interest paid on those bonds can get very costly if rates continue to rise.</p>\n<p>Like Murphy, I gave up a long time ago on predicting where TSLA stock is headed next. In August 2020, Murphy upgraded TSLA stock from “underperform” to “neutral.” At the time, Murphy said Tesla’s skyrocketing stock price essentially allows it to raise unlimited cheap funding via equity offerings.</p>\n<p>In other words, if there is no penalty for printing shares of stock out of thin air, Tesla and any other company can easily succeed.</p>\n<p><b>TSLA Stock and AMC</b></p>\n<p>Tesla a less extreme situation to what is currently happening with<b>AMC Entertainment</b>(NYSE:<b><u>AMC</u></b>). AMC’s business was on the brink of bankruptcy earlier this year. Then, its cult following of investors sent its share price soaring to “save AMC.”</p>\n<p>AMC immediately startedaggressively dumpingshares into the market to raise the cash it needed to survive. The advantage of a cult following is that investors are willing to buy no matter how many shares the company sells. Even when AMCexplicitly warnedits shareholders they could lose “all or a substantial portion” of their investments, they didn’t care. These investors are essentially ATMs for companies like AMC and Tesla.</p>\n<p>Rising interest rates are very bad for Tesla’s valuation based on a discounted cash-flow model. Last week, he gave an interview to CNBC and further elaborated on his decision.</p>\n<p>The Apple Maven takes a closer look at this bear’s journey from highly skeptical to timidly optimistic about Apple shares.</p>\n<p><b>iPhone at the center of the bear case</b></p>\n<p>At the core of Goldman Sachs’ sell rating on Apple stock was the Cupertino company's challenges at meeting iPhone sales growth metrics going forward. Rod Hall explained it:</p>\n<blockquote>\n “Apple continues to show strong execution, but we see fundamentals more likely to disappoint in 2021 as the long-anticipated 5G iPhone fails to meet optimistic consensus expectations and services revenue growth slows.”\n</blockquote>\n<p>To be fair, Apple’s most recent financial results had been far from exhilarating ahead of Goldman’s stock rating upgrade. The Cupertino company's main revenue generator, the iPhone, had produced timid results in 2020, making some wonder if smartphone sales would disappoint&nbsp;at the start of the 5G cycle.</p>\n<p>The plateauing in smartphone sales preceded the pandemic year. Based on data from third party-research companies Gartner and Strategy Analytics, 187 million iPhones were sold in 2019, fewer than the 217 million of 2018. And from 2019 to 2020, there was an unprecedented decrease in iPhone revenues: from $142 billion to $138 billion last year.</p>\n<p>Therefore, and based on recent trends, Rod Hall’s bearishness towards the iPhone seemed reasonably justifiable. What had been missing to tip Apple stock over, in the analyst’s view, was a negative catalyst. He believed that the COVID-19 pandemic could be it.</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/89631d8083d43e0daee7828d45e7a67a\" tg-width=\"627\" tg-height=\"453\"><span>Figure 1: iPhone quarterly revenue ($bn).</span></p>\n<p><b>When Goldman Sachs fell off the horse</b></p>\n<p>Goldman’s rating change on AAPL came in April, after&nbsp;the Cupertino company crushed expectations&nbsp;and released a blowout earnings report. Fiscal second quarter 2021 marked a turning point in iPhone 12 sales, after Apple faced delays&nbsp;in the launch of the new device.</p>\n<p>Apple reported iPhone revenues of $47.9 billion versus Wall Street’s consensus $41.5 billion. Year-over-year, the top-line increase was a staggering $19 billion, representing growth of 65%.</p>\n<p>These numbers probably caught Goldman’s Rod Hall flat-footed.</p>\n<p><b>How Goldman Sachs sees Apple going forward</b></p>\n<p>According to Goldman, the neutral position on AAPL is justified by one key metric: revenues per user. The analyst believes that growth in this metric should be in line with U.S. GDP. He points out that Apple's revenues per user have remained static in recent years, only rising during the pandemic due to stay-at-home trends.</p>\n<p>On the bullish side of the argument, Rod Hall sees the importance of privacy, and thinks that Apple could benefit from increased demand for being an advocate of user data protection. Last week, he gave an interview to CNBC and further elaborated on his decision.\nThe Apple Maven takes a closer look at this bear’s journey from highly skeptical to timidly optimistic about Apple shares.\niPhone at the center of the bear case\nAt the core of Goldman Sachs’ sell rating on Apple stock was the Cupertino company's challenges at meeting iPhone sales growth metrics going forward. Rod Hall explained it:\n\n “Apple continues to show strong execution, but we see fundamentals more likely to disappoint in 2021 as the long-anticipated 5G iPhone fails to meet optimistic consensus expectations and services revenue growth slows.”\n\nTo be fair, Apple’s most recent financial results had been far from exhilarating ahead of Goldman’s stock rating upgrade. The Cupertino company's main revenue generator, the iPhone, had produced timid results in 2020, making some wonder if smartphone sales would disappoint at the start of the 5G cycle.\nThe plateauing in smartphone sales preceded the pandemic year. Based on data from third party-research companies Gartner and Strategy Analytics, 187 million iPhones were sold in 2019, fewer than the 217 million of 2018. And from 2019 to 2020, there was an unprecedented decrease in iPhone revenues: from $142 billion to $138 billion last year.\nTherefore, and based on recent trends, Rod Hall’s bearishness towards the iPhone seemed reasonably justifiable. What had been missing to tip Apple stock over, in the analyst’s view, was a negative catalyst. He believed that the COVID-19 pandemic could be it.\nFigure 1: iPhone quarterly revenue ($bn).\nWhen Goldman Sachs fell off the horse\nGoldman’s rating change on AAPL came in April, after the Cupertino company crushed expectations and released a blowout earnings report. Fiscal second quarter 2021 marked a turning point in iPhone 12 sales, after Apple faced delays in the launch of the new device.\nApple reported iPhone revenues of $47.9 billion versus Wall Street’s consensus $41.5 billion. Year-over-year, the top-line increase was a staggering $19 billion, representing growth of 65%.\nThese numbers probably caught Goldman’s Rod Hall flat-footed.\nHow Goldman Sachs sees Apple going forward\nAccording to Goldman, the neutral position on AAPL is justified by one key metric: revenues per user. The analyst believes that growth in this metric should be in line with U.S. GDP. He points out that Apple's revenues per user have remained static in recent years, only rising during the pandemic due to stay-at-home trends.\nOn the bullish side of the argument, Rod Hall sees the importance of privacy, and thinks that Apple could benefit from increased demand for being an advocate of user data protection.
