Equities like&nbsp;<b>Advanced Micro Devices</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>AMD</u></b>) stock are now miles higher than last year.</p>\n<p>This makes it difficult for those who are true fans of the stock.&nbsp;Under the leadership of Lisa Sue, the company has improved its financial situation tremendously.</p>\n<p>Investors have consequently rewarded AMD through buying its stock, but therein lies the problem. Today’s note carries a cautionary tone, but not against the company prospects. My concern is about the timing for those looking for new investments.</p>\n<p>I have no issues with their fundamental success, since demand for tech is increasing at an exponential rate. There is no doubt that chip company services have a long runway ahead. The pandemic sealed that deal, so there are no more holdouts. Everyone had to embrace tech and the internet.</p>\n<p>We now need more computer brains than ever. Just the switch into telecommuting alone is a big boost. This is not to mention all the electronic infrastructure to make it happen. Crypto and NFT are strong trends, and they too are driving demand for smart machines.</p>\n<p>Clearly the AMD fundamental thesis is as close to a slam dunk as it gets. The next bit will be evaluating its value.</p>\n<p><b>AMD Stock Is a Bit Too Hot</b></p>\n<p>Spending is not my concern here because they are delivering astonishing growth. They can’t do that while cinching their purses. Price-to-sales is an honest measure of value for growth stocks. AMD’s is now approaching 11, which is 30% more expensive than October. So investor expectations are perhaps growing too fast.</p>\n<p>I’m not recommending shorting the stock, because it’s not extravagantly expensive. Fast growers demand higher valuations. But it is getting rich relative to its own self. The stock price needs time to consolidate, so that the P/S metric normalizes a bit.</p>\n<p>Among its peers, AMD value is right in the middle of&nbsp;<b>Nvidia</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>NVDA</u></b>) and&nbsp;<b>Intel</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>INTC</u></b>). Its 45 P/E is less than half of NVDA and its P/S is one third. Clearly it’s not an outlier among the bunch. Intel is the cheapest of the three, but for now let’s leave it out of the conversation. INTC value is a low outlier, so we shouldn’t penalize AMD for it.</p>\n<p>Let’s put some perspective on how we got to these stratospheric levels. AMD stock went into the pandemic from an all-time high 75% higher than August 2019. Then, after a brief pandemic collapse, investors stepped into it with a vengeance. From the March 2020 low to this November high they rallied 354%. So the latest 20% correction was merely a scratch on the paint job.</p>\n<p><b>Patience Is Important Now</b></p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/1d5fb0908267e0d542e436e8cbbe132a\" tg-width=\"1524\" tg-height=\"805\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>Source: Charts by TradingView</span></p>\n<p>From an investment perspective, I would much rather get into the stock under $122 per share. I realize I may have to wait a bit, but there are plenty of stocks to trade meanwhile. Active traders can make use of the shorter-term trading opportunities within AMD too. Shorter-term profit potential is easy with such momentum stocks. There is support at $130 and resistance above. If it loses footing then I will get my chance.</p>\n<p>The small-caps have shown extreme weakness of late. Conversely the S&amp;P and the&nbsp;<b>Nasdaq</b>&nbsp;are ready to rally another 15% from here. This shouldn’t happen unless the small-caps also join the party. So, this week we should focus on that to determine the likelihood of another leg higher in the market. If so, then owning AMD stock now would make short-term sense.</p>\n<p>In reality, the markets should meander a bit sideways to consolidate. This would be healthy for AMD and other fast runners. There is no urgency to load up on a full-size positions, even in great stocks like this one.</p>\n<p>My intentions today were not to be negative about the company. I am merely trying to avoid the easy mistakes when possible. This year, that Santa Claus Rally window is set to start on Monday, Dec. 27 — or the latest a Santa Claus rally has started in 11 years, due to the timing of the holidays this year.</p>\n<p>According to data from LPL Financial, the Santa Claus Rally period encapsulates the seven days most likely to be higher in any given year. Since 1950, the Santa Claus Rally period has produced a positive return for the S&amp;P 500 78.9% of the time, with an average return of 1.33%.</p>\n<p>“Why are these seven days so strong?” wrote Ryan Detrick, LPL Financial chief market strategist, in a note. “Whether optimism over a coming new year, holiday spending, traders on vacation, institutions squaring up their books — or the holiday spirit — the bottom line is that bulls tend to believe in Santa.”</p>\n<p>And if history is any indication, the absence of a Santa Claus Rally has also typically served as a harbinger of lower near-term returns.</p>\n<p>\"Going back to the mid-1990s, there have been only six times Santa failed to show in December. January was lower five of those six times, and the full year had a solid gain only once (in 2016, but a mini-bear market early in the year),\" Detrick added.</p>\n<p>“Considering the bear markets of 2000 and 2008 both took place after <a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AONE.U\">one</a> of the rare instances that Santa failed to show makes believers out of us,\" he said. If you're interested in diving in now, the three charts below will provide a look at some data worth considering before you make an investment.</p>\n<p><b>Returns have been unpredictable</b></p>\n<p>Many have bought into the EV sector looking for large, market-beating returns. While shares of EV leader<b>Tesla</b>(NASDAQ:TSLA)skyrocketed last year, as the field of publicly traded names has grown, returns have been inconsistent. And investors need to be prepared for plenty of volatility along the way. The chart below shows the most recent six-month returns from a mix of U.S.- and China-based EV makers:</p>\n<p class=\"t-img-caption\"><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/628cf15ff39a9f1a896ba56a7db9020d\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"387\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\"><span>DATA BYYCHARTS.</span></p>\n<p>Even the strong returns from Tesla and&nbsp;<b>Lucid Group</b>(NASDAQ:LCID)stocks have included big swings in just the past two months. And though Chinese EV makers&nbsp;<b>Nio</b>(NYSE:NIO)&nbsp;and&nbsp;<b>XPeng</b>(NYSE:XPEV)have been growing sales quickly, their stocks have backtracked since June 2021.<b>Lordstown Motors</b>(NASDAQ:RIDE), maker of the Endurance all-electric work truck, has struggled, and shareholders have paid the price this year. The lesson is that there will be winners and losers, and EV stock moves can be quick and extreme.</p>\n<p><b>There's plenty of demand</b></p>\n<p>Just looking at share-price movement doesn't tell the full story, of course. But XPeng andNio deliveries are growing much faster, though the two Chinese companies are growing off of a much smaller base. And as both are already richly valued, with recent&nbsp;market capitalizations&nbsp;of around $36 billion and $48 billion, respectively, investors have sold off shares in recent months. Global demand is strong and growing, but that won't automatically result in growing share prices.</p>\n<p><b>Profitability will take time</b></p>\n<p>Investors in any business need to focus on the bottom line. Early stage growth companies aren't necessarily expected to become profitable quickly, however. Especially with a high-fixed-cost business like automotive manufacturing, profits will only come with scale. CHART BY AUTHOR.</span></p>\n<p>Tesla led the industry with a reported profit of more than $1.6 billion in the third quarter of 2021 .</p>\n<p>BYD is perhaps a less well-known Chinese EV company, and it sells more than just&nbsp;electric cars; it also makes batteries, electric buses, and traditional internal combustion vehicles. But its \"new energy vehicles\" -- which include plug-in hybrid electrics -- made up more than 90% of the nearly 100,000 new energy passenger vehicles it delivered in November.</p>\n<p>Lucid and&nbsp;<b>Rivian Automotive</b>(NASDAQ:RIVN)are getting a lot of attention recently, but they've barely started shipping product; the losses there will continue for some time until those companies reach scale. Investors hope that Nio and XPeng reach profitability soon, as both are growing sales and expanding product offerings. If you're interested in diving in now, the three charts below will provide a look at some data worth considering before you make an investment.\nReturns have been unpredictable\nMany have bought into the EV sector looking for large, market-beating returns. While shares of EV leaderTesla(NASDAQ:TSLA)skyrocketed last year, as the field of publicly traded names has grown, returns have been inconsistent. And investors need to be prepared for plenty of volatility along the way. And as both are already richly valued, with recent market capitalizations of around $36 billion and $48 billion, respectively, investors have sold off shares in recent months. Global demand is strong and growing, but that won't automatically result in growing share prices.\nProfitability will take time\nInvestors in any business need to focus on the bottom line. Early stage growth companies aren't necessarily expected to become profitable quickly, however.
