Shopify</b></p><p>Shopify has become the retail operating system for over 1.7 million businesses. Its portfolio of software and services helps merchants manage sales across physical and digital storefronts, including websites, social platforms, and online marketplaces. Additionally, the Shopify App Store offers thousands of additional software solutions, such as tools for marketing and enterprise resource planning.</p><p>Of particular note, the company&#39;s business model differentiates it from rivals like <b>Amazon</b>. And the company is well-positioned to maintain that momentum, as its founder-led management team is executing on a robust growth strategy.</p><p>For instance, the Shopify Fulfillment Network leans on artificial intelligence and collaborative robots to help merchants ship orders more quickly and cost-effectively. And the Shop mobile app aims to drive buyer engagement and boost repeat purchases by making relevant product recommendations. In fact, despite launching in April 2020, the Shop app surpassed 118 million registered users in the second quarter of 2021, and that number continued to rise in the third quarter.</p><p>Shopify is currently the most popular e-commerce software platform on the market, powering 27% of all online storefronts. In short, the company has a strong competitive position, and management&#39;s ambitious vision should help Shopify capitalize on its $153 billion market opportunity. That&#39;s why I think this company could grow fourfold over the next 10 years, achieving a market cap of $550 billion.</p><p><b>2. Upstart Holdings</b></p><p>Upstart is a fintech company on a mission to modernize the consumer credit industry. Traditionally, banks have made lending decisions using relatively small data sets -- even the most sophisticated credit models incorporate just 30 variables. In turn, lenders frequently make the wrong decisions. That means some creditworthy borrowers are rejected, and those that are approved often pay too much in interest.</p><p>Upstart uses big data and artificial intelligence to make that system more efficient. Specifically, its platform captures over 1,600 data points per applicant and measures those variables against repayment events. Put another way, each time a borrower makes or misses a payment, Upstart&#39;s AI models get a little smarter, creating a flywheel effect: More data means better AI, and better AI means more lending partners (and more data).</p><p>Despite being a relatively young company, the early results are promising. Internal studies have shown that Upstart&#39;s AI models can reduce loss rates by 75%, while keeping approval rates constant. To that end, I wouldn&#39;t be surprised to see Upstart&#39;s market cap climb from $9 billion today to $36 billion in 10 years&#39; time. Or perhaps it’s because the electric vehicle maker faces extremely tough competition from the likes of <b>Xpeng</b>(NYSE:<b><u>XPEV</u></b>),<b>Li Auto</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>LI</u></b>) and <b>Tesla</b>(NASDAQ:<b><u>TSLA</u></b>). Nio also seems to be significantly behind a number of its rivals when it comes to autonomous driving.</p><p>High Prices and Tough Competition</p><p>One thing that could hinder Nio going forward is the relatively high prices of its vehicles. The base prices for Nio’s EV lineup ranges from about $50,000 to roughly $70,000. Add in extras and customization and they can run upward of $80,000.</p><p>NIO’s latest model, the ET7, will cost customers about$68,710 and $77,640depending on what battery pack they pick. And that’s after factoring in EV subsidies from the Chinese government.</p><p>For comparison, Xpeng’s after-subsidy base prices range from $23,000 to $36,000, while Tesla’s cheapest Model 3starts at around $40,000.</p><p>Nio also faces a great deal of competition at the higher end of the EV market from some famous and well-regarded brands including <b>BMW</b>(OTC:<b><u>BMWYY</u></b>), <b>Audi</b>, <b>Lincoln</b> and <b>Mercedes</b>.</p><p>In China, where incomes are generally lower than in the U.S. and Western Europe, less expensive EVs have a much better chance of becoming bestsellers than their more costly peers. In the end, selling millions of EVs with, say, a 20% gross margin will prove more profitable than selling a few hundred thousand vehicles with, say, a 40% gross margin.</p><p>Nio Appears To Be Falling Behind in Autonomous Driving</p><p>It seems that Nio is well behind Xpeng and Tesla when it comes to autonomous driving. Last month, <i>Barron’s</i> reported: “NIO Autonomous Driving or NAD, as the company calls it, will maintain driving speeds and do some steering, but drivers still need to pay attention to the road at all times.” Doesn’t sound all that “autonomous” to me.</p><p>Meanwhile, in October, Xpeng released its Xpilot 3.5 version of its advanced driver-assistance system. “The system allows Xpeng’s cars to change lanes, speed up or slow down, or overtake cars and enter and exit highways,” according to <i>CNBC</i>.</p><p>And in November, Tesla started offering its Enhanced Autopilot system in China to some customers. According to <i>Inside EVs</i>, among the features offered by Tesla’s system are “Summon, Autopark, Auto Lane Change, and, most importantly, Navigate on Autopilot.”</p><p>You don’t have to be an expert on autonomous vehicles to see that Nio is trailing Xpeng and Tesla in this area by a significant margin.</p><p>Disappointing Sales Growth and Financial Results</p><p>For December, Nio reported that its deliveries had increased nearly 50%year over year to 10,489 EVs. That’s not terrible, but it was lower than the prior month’s 10,878 deliveries and a marked slowdown from November’s year-over-year growth of 106%.</p><p>It also paled in comparison to its competitors’ December growth. XPeng delivered 16,000 vehicles in December, up 181% from a year ago and 2.5% from November. And Li Auto saw its deliveries hit 14,087 in December, up 4.5% over November and 130% year over year.</p><p>Nio is expected to report fourth-quarter earnings next month. Management’s most recent guidance, released in November, of $1.46 billion to $1.56 billion fell short of analysts’ estimates of $1.75 billion. The consensus has since lowered its forecast, predicting Nio will earn $1.53 billion. That represents year-over-year growth of 49.5%, while full-year revenue is expected to increase 120% to $5.62 billion.</p><p>If the company fails to meet or beat these numbers, NIO stock could sell off sharply.</p><p>The Bottom Line on Nio Stock</p><p>Nio faces tough competition in the Chinese EV market and appears to be falling behind its competitors in terms of growth. The high price of Nio’s vehicles compared with some of its rivals’ and its relatively slow progress when it comes to self-driving technologies could cost the company its edge.</p><p>Shares are currently trading for five times analysts’ average 2022 revenue estimate, which could prove to be overly optimistic. NIO stock isn’t expensive for an EV name, but it isn’t cheap either. And that’s after factoring in EV subsidies from the Chinese government.For comparison, Xpeng’s after-subsidy base prices range from $23,000 to $36,000, while Tesla’s cheapest Model 3starts at around $40,000.Nio also faces a great deal of competition at the higher end of the EV market from some famous and well-regarded brands including BMW(OTC:BMWYY), Audi, Lincoln and Mercedes.In China, where incomes are generally lower than in the U.S. and Western Europe, less expensive EVs have a much better chance of becoming bestsellers than their more costly peers. In the end, selling millions of EVs with, say, a 20% gross margin will prove more profitable than selling a few hundred thousand vehicles with, say, a 40% gross margin.Nio Appears To Be Falling Behind in Autonomous DrivingIt seems that Nio is well behind Xpeng and Tesla when it comes to autonomous driving. Last month, Barron’s reported: “NIO Autonomous Driving or NAD, as the company calls it, will maintain driving speeds and do some steering, but drivers still need to pay attention to the road at all times.” Doesn’t sound all that “autonomous” to me.Meanwhile, in October, Xpeng released its Xpilot 3.5 version of its advanced driver-assistance system. “The system allows Xpeng’s cars to change lanes, speed up or slow down, or overtake cars and enter and exit highways,” according to CNBC.And in November, Tesla started offering its Enhanced Autopilot system in China to some customers. According to Inside EVs, among the features offered by Tesla’s system are “Summon, Autopark, Auto Lane Change, and, most importantly, Navigate on Autopilot.”You don’t have to be an expert on autonomous vehicles to see that Nio is trailing Xpeng and Tesla in this area by a significant margin.Disappointing Sales Growth and Financial ResultsFor December, Nio reported that its deliveries had increased nearly 50%year over year to 10,489 EVs. That’s not terrible, but it was lower than the prior month’s 10,878 deliveries and a marked slowdown from November’s year-over-year growth of 106%.It also paled in comparison to its competitors’ December growth. XPeng delivered 16,000 vehicles in December, up 181% from a year ago and 2.5% from November. And Li Auto saw its deliveries hit 14,087 in December, up 4.5% over November and 130% year over year.Nio is expected to report fourth-quarter earnings next month. Management’s most recent guidance, released in November, of $1.46 billion to $1.56 billion fell short of analysts’ estimates of $1.75 billion. The consensus has since lowered its forecast, predicting Nio will earn $1.53 billion. That represents year-over-year growth of 49.5%, while full-year revenue is expected to increase 120% to $5.62 billion.If the company fails to meet or beat these numbers, NIO stock could sell off sharply.The Bottom Line on Nio StockNio faces tough competition in the Chinese EV market and appears to be falling behind its competitors in terms of growth. The high price of Nio’s vehicles compared with some of its rivals’ and its relatively slow progress when it comes to self-driving technologies could cost the company its edge.Shares are currently trading for five times analysts’ average 2022 revenue estimate, which could prove to be overly optimistic. NIO stock isn’t expensive for an EV name, but it isn’t cheap either. Macroeconomic shifts have induced traders to sell off growth stocks in favor of value, and the green energy space specifically was hit particularly hard hit as the Build Back Better billstalled in Congress. But the industry is still growing quickly, and has always adapted to changing political conditions.</p>\n<p>As 2022 approaches, we asked three Fool.com contributors to offer their picks for top renewable energy stocks to buy for next year. They found&nbsp;<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/SPWR\"><b>SunPower</b></a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/AY\"><b>Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure</b></a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https://laohu8.com/S/CHPT\"><b>ChargePoint Holdings</b></a>&nbsp;to be a cut above the rest.</p>\n<p><b>Travis Hoium(SunPower):</b>In 2021, I think we saw a shift in how consumers see electricity markets and their own energy independence. Not only are residential solar installations in the U.S. at record highs, an increasing percentage of customers are also adding energy storage and EV charging to their installations. This plays to SunPower's strengths as an energy solutions company.</p>\n<p>SunPower has shed its solar module manufacturing business, its utility-scale solar business, and is in the process of finding strategic alternatives for its commercial solar business. That leaves its focus squarely on residential solar, and it shows. Its non-GAAP gross margin per watt for residential projects jumped from $0.46 to $0.69 over the past year. At the same time, its net recourse debt declined from $428 million to $154 million.</p>\n<p>Fewer subsidies may be bad newsfor solar energy companies, but that won't halt the industry's growth nor will it eliminate people's desire to buy rooftop solar systems or EV chargers. I think SunPower is well-positioned to ride the coming wave of growth, and that's why I think 2022 will be a great year for the stock.</p>\n<p><b>Howard Smith(Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure)</b>: Nations and businesses around the world are increasingly investing in renewable energy infrastructure. As that infrastructure grows, so too do the power purchase agreements that companies are signing with owners of those assets to bolster sustainability initiatives. The majority of Atlantica Sustainable's power generation comes from renewable energy, but it also has efficient natural gas plants and owns electricity transmission lines and water desalination facilities.</p>\n<p>Most of its renewable energy comes from solar assets, and all of those are generating revenues under long-term contracts. For investors, that means the company's dividend, which at current share prices yields around 4.8%, should be reliable. In fact, over the first nine months of 2021, its cash available for distribution increased 12.9% year over year. Its revenues grew 8.4% in the same period, excluding foreign currency impacts and a non-recurring project.</p>\n<p>Renewables contributed 77% of Atlantica's revenue through Sept. 30. In addition to North America, the company has assets in South America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. But the vast majority of its 2021 new investments have been in North America. Thanks to the recently enacted infrastructure bill and the potential passage of legislation routing additional funds to U.S. renewable energy development, there should be no lack of assets with which to grow in coming years.</p>\n<p>Atlantica Sustainable also looks like a good value compared to its peers right now. The charts below show itsdividend yieldexceeds that of two other renewable energy asset owners, and it trades at a more favorable valuation.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/36f6c35975406c560a29e97949abff9e\" tg-width=\"720\" tg-height=\"387\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\">DATA BYYCHARTS</p>\n<p>Through 2025, the company expects 73% of its cash available for distribution to come from renewable assets, and geographically, almost half will come from North America. Given the company's assets and investments in a region that has committed to growing its renewable energy sources, this is a good time to own Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure.</p>\n<p><b>Daniel Foelber&nbsp;(ChargePoint Holdings):</b>If you step back and think about the ongoing national transition from vehicles powered by internal combustion to those powered by electricity, it quickly becomes clear the U.S. is going to need far more electric vehicle (EV) chargers. That's why $7.5 billion of President Biden's Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Actis earmarked for expanding the nation's EV chargingcapabilities. Like many industries dependent on hardware and high costs, the risk for businesses in this space is that EV chargers will become commoditized, and that businesses and consumers will simply choose the providers that offer the lowest-cost solutions.</p>\n<p>ChargePoint can't bypass this risk, but it has done a great job building a vertically integrated, capital-light business, and it's nowthe U.S. leaderin its niche. In the case of ChargePoint, \"capital-light\" means that it doesn't need to spend heavily to grow its revenue because it sells its hardware upfront. Over time, its growing charging network should generate greater recurring revenue through software subscriptions. But for now, subscriptions account for less than 30% of total revenue.</p>\n<p>ChargePoint expects its business to grow in lockstep with U.S. EV sales. Despite their growth, so far, EVs are only on course to account for 4% of U.S. car sales in 2021, compared to 9% in China and 14% in Europe. That leaves plenty of room for ChargePoint's business to scale and reach profitability.</p>\n<p>As ChargePoint waits for EV adoption to accelerate, it has built a larger and more sophisticated network of charging ports. As of Oct. 31, it had 163,000 activated ports around the world, roughly 7% of which are DC fast-charging ports.&nbsp;For comparison, consider that the&nbsp;<b>Tesla</b>&nbsp;Supercharger network consists of just over 30,000 fast-charging ports.</p>\n<p>Management has forecast that ChargePoint will finish its fiscal 2022 (which ends on Jan. 31) with annual revenues of between $235 million and $240 million -- up more than 60% from fiscal 2021. Also impressive is the company's non-GAAP gross margin, which was 27% in the fiscal third quarter compared to 20% in the prior-year period. ChargePoint stands out as a fast-growing business that willflex its industry-leading position to pull away from the competition.</p>\n<p>Renewable energy stocksmay not be ending 2021 on a high note, but that doesn't mean the long-term trends aren't heading in the right direction. Macroeconomic shifts have induced traders to sell off growth stocks in favor of value, and the green energy space specifically was hit particularly hard hit as the Build Back Better billstalled in Congress. But the industry is still growing quickly, and has always adapted to changing political conditions.\nAs 2022 approaches, we asked three Fool.com contributors to offer their picks for top renewable energy stocks to buy for next year. They found SunPower, Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure, and ChargePoint Holdings to be a cut above the rest.\nTravis Hoium(SunPower):In 2021, I think we saw a shift in how consumers see electricity markets and their own energy independence. Not only are residential solar installations in the U.S. at record highs, an increasing percentage of customers are also adding energy storage and EV charging to their installations. This plays to SunPower's strengths as an energy solutions company.\nSunPower has shed its solar module manufacturing business, its utility-scale solar business, and is in the process of finding strategic alternatives for its commercial solar business. That leaves its focus squarely on residential solar, and it shows. Its non-GAAP gross margin per watt for residential projects jumped from $0.46 to $0.69 over the past year. At the same time, its net recourse debt declined from $428 million to $154 million.\nFewer subsidies may be bad newsfor solar energy companies, but that won't halt the industry's growth nor will it eliminate people's desire to buy rooftop solar systems or EV chargers. I think SunPower is well-positioned to ride the coming wave of growth, and that's why I think 2022 will be a great year for the stock.\nHoward Smith(Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure): Nations and businesses around the world are increasingly investing in renewable energy infrastructure. As that infrastructure grows, so too do the power purchase agreements that companies are signing with owners of those assets to bolster sustainability initiatives. The majority of Atlantica Sustainable's power generation comes from renewable energy, but it also has efficient natural gas plants and owns electricity transmission lines and water desalination facilities.\nMost of its renewable energy comes from solar assets, and all of those are generating revenues under long-term contracts. For investors, that means the company's dividend, which at current share prices yields around 4.8%, should be reliable. In fact, over the first nine months of 2021, its cash available for distribution increased 12.9% year over year. Its revenues grew 8.4% in the same period, excluding foreign currency impacts and a non-recurring project.\nRenewables contributed 77% of Atlantica's revenue through Sept. 30. In addition to North America, the company has assets in South America, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. But the vast majority of its 2021 new investments have been in North America. Thanks to the recently enacted infrastructure bill and the potential passage of legislation routing additional funds to U.S. renewable energy development, there should be no lack of assets with which to grow in coming years.\nAtlantica Sustainable also looks like a good value compared to its peers right now. The charts below show itsdividend yieldexceeds that of two other renewable energy asset owners, and it trades at a more favorable valuation.\nDATA BYYCHARTS\nThrough 2025, the company expects 73% of its cash available for distribution to come from renewable assets, and geographically, almost half will come from North America. Given the company's assets and investments in a region that has committed to growing its renewable energy sources, this is a good time to own Atlantica Sustainable Infrastructure.\nDaniel Foelber (ChargePoint Holdings):If you step back and think about the ongoing national transition from vehicles powered by internal combustion to those powered by electricity, it quickly becomes clear the U.S. is going to need far more electric vehicle (EV) chargers. That's why $7.5 billion of President Biden's Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Actis earmarked for expanding the nation's EV chargingcapabilities. Like many industries dependent on hardware and high costs, the risk for businesses in this space is that EV chargers will become commoditized, and that businesses and consumers will simply choose the providers that offer the lowest-cost solutions.\nChargePoint can't bypass this risk, but it has done a great job building a vertically integrated, capital-light business, and it's nowthe U.S. leaderin its niche. In the case of ChargePoint, \"capital-light\" means that it doesn't need to spend heavily to grow its revenue because it sells its hardware upfront. Over time, its growing charging network should generate greater recurring revenue through software subscriptions. But for now, subscriptions account for less than 30% of total revenue.\nChargePoint expects its business to grow in lockstep with U.S. EV sales. Despite their growth, so far, EVs are only on course to account for 4% of U.S. car sales in 2021, compared to 9% in China and 14% in Europe. That leaves plenty of room for ChargePoint's business to scale and reach profitability.\nAs ChargePoint waits for EV adoption to accelerate, it has built a larger and more sophisticated network of charging ports. As of Oct. 31, it had 163,000 activated ports around the world, roughly 7% of which are DC fast-charging ports. For comparison, consider that the Tesla Supercharger network consists of just over 30,000 fast-charging ports.\nManagement has forecast that ChargePoint will finish its fiscal 2022 (which ends on Jan. 31) with annual revenues of between $235 million and $240 million -- up more than 60% from fiscal 2021. Also impressive is the company's non-GAAP gross margin, which was 27% in the fiscal third quarter compared to 20% in the prior-year period. ChargePoint stands out as a fast-growing business that willflex its industry-leading position to pull away from the competition.\nRenewable energy stocksmay not be ending 2021 on a high note, but that doesn't mean the long-term trends aren't heading in the right direction.
