No need to remind anyone back then of droughts, wildfires, or Covid-19 surges that are unfortunate features of the steamy season this year.</p>\n<p>But the coming of August also means entering what historically has been the most treacherous stretch of the year for stocks, according to data going back to 1928 compiled by Bank of America analyst Stephen Suttmeier. He finds that theS&amp;P 500index had a negative return averaging 0.03% in August, September, and October—the worst three-month span of the year for the big-cap benchmark. In fact, they constitute the only three-month period that averages in the red.</p>\n<p>August actually is bracketed by the best and worst months of the year, he adds in a research note. July averages a 1.58% return on the S&amp;P 500, with positive results 59.1% of the time, while September averages a negative 1.03%, ending in the plus column less than half of the time, or 45%.</p>\n<p>This July did even better than the norm, with the S&amp;P 500 gaining 2.27%. It also was the sixth consecutive up month for the index—the longest positive streak since September 2018, according to Dow Jones’ statistical mavens. During that period, its cumulative advance was 18.34%.</p>\n<p>August’s record is in between, with an average 0.70% S&amp;P 500 return and positive results 58.1% of the time, marking a transition from the “summer rip” to the “fall dip.”</p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, the laggard returns of the August-October period are accompanied by an uptick in volatility, Suttmeier finds. Based on records going back to 1992, theCboe Volatility Index,or VIX, has often seen spikes during those months, following relatively subdued volatility in the April-July period.</p>\n<p>Past isn’t necessarily prologue, but if it is, the timing of the initial public offering byRobinhood Markets(ticker: HOOD) might prove propitious, if the stock market does have its typical seasonal rough patch. The online broker, whose putative mission is to open investing to novices supposedly ignored by established outfits, sold 55 million shares at $38 on Thursday. In the process, it provided a valuable lesson to all those who got in on the IPO: Buy low and sell high.</p>\n<p>The company evidently fulfilled the latter imperative, selling its shares high, even though they were priced at the low end of the expected $38-$42 range. Their price sank 8.4% on their first day of trading, although they recouped a bit on Friday. By week’s end, buyers of Robinhood’s IPO who held were down 7.5%.</p>\n<p>Among those who sold high were the company’s co-founders, CEO Vladimir Tenev and Chief Creative Officer Baiju Bhatt, who each offloaded 1.25 million shares in the IPO. As my illustrious predecessor, Alan Abelson, liked to observe, there are many good reasons to sell a stock, but expecting it to go up isn’t one of them. That has never been more true, given the ability of rich owners to monetize their assets by borrowing against them cheaply, and without incurring capital-gains taxes.</p>\n<p>To be sure, Tenev and Bhatt still have significant stakes in Robinhood. Asour colleague Avi Salzman reported, these were worth $2.5 billion at the initial offering price, and Tenev and Bhatt retain voting control. The two also could receive awards of shares worth as much as $6.7 billion for Tenev and $4 billion for Bhatt, if the stock hits $300, or nearly the proverbial ten-bagger from here.</p>\n<p>But in a blow against income inequality, the potential billionaire pair took symbolic pay cuts, to $34,248, the average annual wage of American workers. As the comedian Yakov Smirnoff likes to say, “What a country!”</p>\n<p>How those workers are faring will be a subject of the monthly employment report slated for release this coming Friday.</p>\n<p>Economists’ forecasts for nonfarm payrolls center around a gain of 900,000. Jefferies economists Aneta Markowska and Thomas Simons estimate that the increase could top the long-anticipated one million mark; they forecast 1.2 million.</p>\n<p>Markowska and Simons think the expiration of supplemental unemployment benefits in some states will boost the labor supply, although that is a matter of significant debate. No need to remind anyone back then of droughts, wildfires, or Covid-19 surges that are unfortunate features of the steamy season this year.\nBut the coming of August also means entering what historically has been the most treacherous stretch of the year for stocks, according to data going back to 1928 compiled by Bank of America analyst Stephen Suttmeier. He finds that theS&P 500index had a negative return averaging 0.03% in August, September, and October—the worst three-month span of the year for the big-cap benchmark. In fact, they constitute the only three-month period that averages in the red.\nAugust actually is bracketed by the best and worst months of the year, he adds in a research note. July averages a 1.58% return on the S&P 500, with positive results 59.1% of the time, while September averages a negative 1.03%, ending in the plus column less than half of the time, or 45%.\nThis July did even better than the norm, with the S&P 500 gaining 2.27%. It also was the sixth consecutive up month for the index—the longest positive streak since September 2018, according to Dow Jones’ statistical mavens. During that period, its cumulative advance was 18.34%.\nAugust’s record is in between, with an average 0.70% S&P 500 return and positive results 58.1% of the time, marking a transition from the “summer rip” to the “fall dip.”\nNot surprisingly, the laggard returns of the August-October period are accompanied by an uptick in volatility, Suttmeier finds. Based on records going back to 1992, theCboe Volatility Index,or VIX, has often seen spikes during those months, following relatively subdued volatility in the April-July period.\nPast isn’t necessarily prologue, but if it is, the timing of the initial public offering byRobinhood Markets(ticker: HOOD) might prove propitious, if the stock market does have its typical seasonal rough patch. The online broker, whose putative mission is to open investing to novices supposedly ignored by established outfits, sold 55 million shares at $38 on Thursday. In the process, it provided a valuable lesson to all those who got in on the IPO: Buy low and sell high.\nThe company evidently fulfilled the latter imperative, selling its shares high, even though they were priced at the low end of the expected $38-$42 range. Their price sank 8.4% on their first day of trading, although they recouped a bit on Friday. By week’s end, buyers of Robinhood’s IPO who held were down 7.5%.\nAmong those who sold high were the company’s co-founders, CEO Vladimir Tenev and Chief Creative Officer Baiju Bhatt, who each offloaded 1.25 million shares in the IPO. Asour colleague Avi Salzman reported, these were worth $2.5 billion at the initial offering price, and Tenev and Bhatt retain voting control. The two also could receive awards of shares worth as much as $6.7 billion for Tenev and $4 billion for Bhatt, if the stock hits $300, or nearly the proverbial ten-bagger from here.\nBut in a blow against income inequality, the potential billionaire pair took symbolic pay cuts, to $34,248, the average annual wage of American workers. Other backers included Temasek Holdings, Visa, Vertex Ventures, Beacon Venture Capital and Rocket Capital. For example, the 200 million Prime accountsmeanthat Amazon’s Prime Video has become one of the most widely available streaming services in the world.</p>\n<p>But if potential investors were to consider buying Amazon stock today, should they focus their due diligence on Amazon’s “side gigs”, particularly subscriptions? Amazon Prime, Prime Video and others: could they be an important piece of the investment thesis?</p>\n<p><b>A snapshot of Amazon’s businesses</b></p>\n<p>Around 70% of Amazon’s revenues come from e-commerce, broken into two major categories: 1P and 3P. The first consists of sales made by Amazon itself, while the latter pertains to thirty-party vendors that sell their products through Amazon’s marketplace.</p>\n<p>Another 12% of Amazon’s revenues come from AWS, the acronym for Amazon Web Service. The segment provides cloud infrastructure services primarily to enterprises and competes with the likes of Microsoft’s Azure.</p>\n<p>Aside from physical stores and other minor activities, subscriptions account for only around 7% of Amazon’s total revenues – a drop in the bucket.</p>\n<p><b>Does it matter?</b></p>\n<p>At first glance, even if all of Amazon’s sub revenues were to vanish overnight (not practical, only a thought exercise), the company would still be left with a giant retail and cloud business that grew sales ata dizzying rate of around 40% last quarter. Without subscriptions, Amazon’s Q1 sales would have still increased by a respectable 34% year-over-year -- more so than in any quarter of 2019.</p>\n<p>From a number’s perspective, Amazon would probably be fine deemphasizing its subscription businesses to become a pure-play e-commerce and cloud giant. US e-commerce isforecastedto grow 20% by 2025, and Amazon is likely to control a large piece of this expanding market. Worldwide, e-commerce is expected to grow an even better 30%, and Amazon’s footprint expansion opportunities outside North America are substantial.</p>\n<p><b>Think bigger picture</b></p>\n<p>The catch is that subscriptions serve as a hook to attract and retain Amazon customers into its retail ecosystem.</p>\n<p>For instance, a Prime subscription brings in no more than $120 per year to Amazon’s coffers. Considering the costly benefits of a Prime account (i.e. fast delivery, access to audio and video content that is expensive to produce), the Seattle-based company probably sees little of the revenue trickling down to earnings.</p>\n<p>However, a Prime member is a much better Amazon customer compared to those who do not have a membership. According toForbes, a staggering 96% of all Prime members agree that they are more likely to buy from Amazon than from other e-commerce vendors. See below.</p>\n<p><img src=\"https://static.tigerbbs.com/348e859b0c882c8e45d3edc9324f8351\" tg-width=\"700\" tg-height=\"314\" width=\"100%\" height=\"auto\">“Ecosystem” may be an overused term, but it seems to be the path to success that Big Tech companies like Amazon have been carving. But the company has been diversifying its business model in the past several years and gaining scale. For example, the 200 million Prime accountsmeanthat Amazon’s Prime Video has become one of the most widely available streaming services in the world.\nBut if potential investors were to consider buying Amazon stock today, should they focus their due diligence on Amazon’s “side gigs”, particularly subscriptions? Amazon Prime, Prime Video and others: could they be an important piece of the investment thesis?\nA snapshot of Amazon’s businesses\nAround 70% of Amazon’s revenues come from e-commerce, broken into two major categories: 1P and 3P. The first consists of sales made by Amazon itself, while the latter pertains to thirty-party vendors that sell their products through Amazon’s marketplace.\nAnother 12% of Amazon’s revenues come from AWS, the acronym for Amazon Web Service. The segment provides cloud infrastructure services primarily to enterprises and competes with the likes of Microsoft’s Azure.\nAside from physical stores and other minor activities, subscriptions account for only around 7% of Amazon’s total revenues – a drop in the bucket.\nDoes it matter?\nAt first glance, even if all of Amazon’s sub revenues were to vanish overnight (not practical, only a thought exercise), the company would still be left with a giant retail and cloud business that grew sales ata dizzying rate of around 40% last quarter. Without subscriptions, Amazon’s Q1 sales would have still increased by a respectable 34% year-over-year -- more so than in any quarter of 2019.\nFrom a number’s perspective, Amazon would probably be fine deemphasizing its subscription businesses to become a pure-play e-commerce and cloud giant. US e-commerce isforecastedto grow 20% by 2025, and Amazon is likely to control a large piece of this expanding market. Worldwide, e-commerce is expected to grow an even better 30%, and Amazon’s footprint expansion opportunities outside North America are substantial.\nThink bigger picture\nThe catch is that subscriptions serve as a hook to attract and retain Amazon customers into its retail ecosystem.\nFor instance, a Prime subscription brings in no more than $120 per year to Amazon’s coffers. That's roughly in-line with history. Typically it happens eight times annually, and we'reroughly halfway through the year.</p>\n<p>But here's the interesting part that shows how \"buying the dip\" is in vogue. In just one week following the S&amp;P 500 falling below its 50-day moving average each time this year, it gained 3.95% on average.</p>\n<p>That's an astounding level of bounce back. Historically, the S&amp;P 500 only inched up 0.06% in the week after dropping to the 50-day moving average since 1945. And this year's average one-week bounce back ranks No. 1 for any year since at least World War II, Bespoke says.</p>\n<p>And it's not just a short bounce either. Following its drops below the 50-day moving average this year, the S&amp;P 500 was 5.7% higher, on average, a month later. That's much higher than the S&amp;P 500's typical 0.54% rise following drops to below the 50-week moving average going back to 1945.</p>\n<p>But what kinds ofstocks bounce back?</p>\n<p>Looking At This Week's S&amp;P 500 Sell-Off</p>\n<p>Monday's sell-off didn't quite knock the S&amp;P 500 below its 50-day moving average at the close. The S&amp;P 500 hit the 50-day and bounced intraday.</p>\n<p>But a look at how some individual stocks behaved gives a taste of what buy-the-dip investors are doing now. Take Dover, a maker of a variety of industrial parts and supplies. Shares were up more than 20% this year up until the sell-off on Monday. The stock then slid to just 1% above its 50-day line. But thatlured in the dip buyers, who pushed shares up 7.7% from the 50-day moving average.</p>\n<p>Investors also like to think of S&amp;P 500 tech stocks as buy-the-dip plays. But this week's example isn't a household name. PTC, a tech firm that helps companies upgrade their operations, Monday dropped to just 1% above its 50-day moving average, but since then it's blasted nearly 6% from that key support level.</p>\n<p>Even some S&amp;P 500 stocks that closed below their 50-day lines bounced in a big way. Teledyne Technologies actually ended Monday 0.4% below its 50-day moving average.
