Stocks Are Entering the Most Dangerous Stretch of the Year","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1142925544","media":"Barron's","summary":"“Yes, it’s summer, my time of year,”as the group War sangin that golden oldie “Summer” from the 1970","content":"
“Yes, it’s summer, my time of year,”as the group War sangin that golden oldie “Summer” from the 1970s, recalling pleasant times at the beach or by the barbecue. No need to remind anyone back then of droughts, wildfires, or Covid-19 surges that are unfortunate features of the steamy season this year.
\n
But the coming of August also means entering what historically has been the most treacherous stretch of the year for stocks, according to data going back to 1928 compiled by Bank of America analyst Stephen Suttmeier. He finds that theS&P 500index had a negative return averaging 0.03% in August, September, and October—the worst three-month span of the year for the big-cap benchmark. In fact, they constitute the only three-month period that averages in the red.
\n
August actually is bracketed by the best and worst months of the year, he adds in a research note. July averages a 1.58% return on the S&P 500, with positive results 59.1% of the time, while September averages a negative 1.03%, ending in the plus column less than half of the time, or 45%.
\n
This July did even better than the norm, with the S&P 500 gaining 2.27%. It also was the sixth consecutive up month for the index—the longest positive streak since September 2018, according to Dow Jones’ statistical mavens. During that period, its cumulative advance was 18.34%.
\n
August’s record is in between, with an average 0.70% S&P 500 return and positive results 58.1% of the time, marking a transition from the “summer rip” to the “fall dip.”
\n
Not surprisingly, the laggard returns of the August-October period are accompanied by an uptick in volatility, Suttmeier finds. Based on records going back to 1992, theCboe Volatility Index,or VIX, has often seen spikes during those months, following relatively subdued volatility in the April-July period.
\n
Past isn’t necessarily prologue, but if it is, the timing of the initial public offering byRobinhood Markets(ticker: HOOD) might prove propitious, if the stock market does have its typical seasonal rough patch. The online broker, whose putative mission is to open investing to novices supposedly ignored by established outfits, sold 55 million shares at $38 on Thursday. In the process, it provided a valuable lesson to all those who got in on the IPO: Buy low and sell high.
\n
The company evidently fulfilled the latter imperative, selling its shares high, even though they were priced at the low end of the expected $38-$42 range. Their price sank 8.4% on their first day of trading, although they recouped a bit on Friday. By week’s end, buyers of Robinhood’s IPO who held were down 7.5%.
\n
Among those who sold high were the company’s co-founders, CEO Vladimir Tenev and Chief Creative Officer Baiju Bhatt, who each offloaded 1.25 million shares in the IPO. As my illustrious predecessor, Alan Abelson, liked to observe, there are many good reasons to sell a stock, but expecting it to go up isn’t one of them. That has never been more true, given the ability of rich owners to monetize their assets by borrowing against them cheaply, and without incurring capital-gains taxes.
\n
To be sure, Tenev and Bhatt still have significant stakes in Robinhood. Asour colleague Avi Salzman reported, these were worth $2.5 billion at the initial offering price, and Tenev and Bhatt retain voting control. The two also could receive awards of shares worth as much as $6.7 billion for Tenev and $4 billion for Bhatt, if the stock hits $300, or nearly the proverbial ten-bagger from here.
\n
But in a blow against income inequality, the potential billionaire pair took symbolic pay cuts, to $34,248, the average annual wage of American workers. As the comedian Yakov Smirnoff likes to say, “What a country!”
\n
How those workers are faring will be a subject of the monthly employment report slated for release this coming Friday.
\n
Economists’ forecasts for nonfarm payrolls center around a gain of 900,000. No need to remind anyone back then of droughts, wildfires, or Covid-19 surges that are unfortunate features of the steamy season this year.\nBut the coming of August also means entering what historically has been the most treacherous stretch of the year for stocks, according to data going back to 1928 compiled by Bank of America analyst Stephen Suttmeier. He finds that theS&P 500index had a negative return averaging 0.03% in August, September, and October—the worst three-month span of the year for the big-cap benchmark. In fact, they constitute the only three-month period that averages in the red.\nAugust actually is bracketed by the best and worst months of the year, he adds in a research note. July averages a 1.58% return on the S&P 500, with positive results 59.1% of the time, while September averages a negative 1.03%, ending in the plus column less than half of the time, or 45%.\nThis July did even better than the norm, with the S&P 500 gaining 2.27%. It also was the sixth consecutive up month for the index—the longest positive streak since September 2018, according to Dow Jones’ statistical mavens. During that period, its cumulative advance was 18.34%.\nAugust’s record is in between, with an average 0.70% S&P 500 return and positive results 58.1% of the time, marking a transition from the “summer rip” to the “fall dip.”\nNot surprisingly, the laggard returns of the August-October period are accompanied by an uptick in volatility, Suttmeier finds. Based on records going back to 1992, theCboe Volatility Index,or VIX, has often seen spikes during those months, following relatively subdued volatility in the April-July period.\nPast isn’t necessarily prologue, but if it is, the timing of the initial public offering byRobinhood Markets(ticker: HOOD) might prove propitious, if the stock market does have its typical seasonal rough patch. The online broker, whose putative mission is to open investing to novices supposedly ignored by established outfits, sold 55 million shares at $38 on Thursday. In the process, it provided a valuable lesson to all those who got in on the IPO: Buy low and sell high.\nThe company evidently fulfilled the latter imperative, selling its shares high, even though they were priced at the low end of the expected $38-$42 range. Their price sank 8.4% on their first day of trading, although they recouped a bit on Friday. By week’s end, buyers of Robinhood’s IPO who held were down 7.5%.\nAmong those who sold high were the company’s co-founders, CEO Vladimir Tenev and Chief Creative Officer Baiju Bhatt, who each offloaded 1.25 million shares in the IPO. As my illustrious predecessor, Alan Abelson, liked to observe, there are many good reasons to sell a stock, but expecting it to go up isn’t one of them. That has never been more true, given the ability of rich owners to monetize their assets by borrowing against them cheaply, and without incurring capital-gains taxes.\nTo be sure, Tenev and Bhatt still have significant stakes in Robinhood. Asour colleague Avi Salzman reported, these were worth $2.5 billion at the initial offering price, and Tenev and Bhatt retain voting control. The two also could receive awards of shares worth as much as $6.7 billion for Tenev and $4 billion for Bhatt, if the stock hits $300, or nearly the proverbial ten-bagger from here.\nBut in a blow against income inequality, the potential billionaire pair took symbolic pay cuts, to $34,248, the average annual wage of American workers. As the comedian Yakov Smirnoff likes to say, “What a country!”\nHow those workers are faring will be a subject of the monthly employment report slated for release this coming Friday.\nEconomists’ forecasts for nonfarm payrolls center around a gain of 900,000. Jefferies economists Aneta Markowska and Thomas Simons estimate that the increase could top the long-anticipated one million mark; they forecast 1.2 million.\nMarkowska and Simons think the expiration of supplemental unemployment benefits in some states will boost the labor supply, although that is a matter of significant debate. Other backers included Temasek Holdings, Visa, Vertex Ventures, Beacon Venture Capital and Rocket Capital. Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC also joined the round, according to a person familiar with the matter who asked not to be named.\nNium plans to use the funds to expand in the United States and Latin America before pursuing an initial public offering in the US in 18 to 24 months, Chief executive officer Prajit Nanu, 39, said in an interview. The company will remain on the lookout for acquisition targets in those markets as well as Australia, he said.\nNium's unicorn status marks a milestone in Singapore, an affluent island nation of 5.7 million people that's trying to position itself as a vibrant fintech hub. There are more than 1,000 fintech start-ups in the country, mainly focusing on payments, lending, investment and personal finance. Pine Labs, a payments platform for merchants in India and South-east Asia, is one of the most valuable fintech start-ups based in Singapore, valued at US$3 billion.\n\"There has been a glass ceiling for South-east Asian fintech start-ups\" with much investor focus placed on richly-funded consumer tech giants such as Singapore's Grab Holdings as well as Gojek and other Indonesian unicorns, Mr Nanu said. \"That ceiling has been broken and we're likely to see more unicorns, largely in fintech, coming out of Singapore.\"\nNium, which means \"rules\" in Sanskrit, was co-founded as a cross-border remittance service in 2014 by Mr Nanu, who was neither an engineer nor financier. After growing up in Mumbai, he got a taste of what it's like to build fast-growing businesses during his 12-year career at firms including Adventity and WNS Global Services.\nMr Nanu came up with the idea after trying to send money from India to Thailand to organise a bachelor's party for a friend in 2013. He ran into a problem as a Thai resort refused to take his credit card and insisted on a bank transfer, while his bank in India requested an extensive list of documents for transferring US$640.\nToday, Nium counts Thailand's Kasikornbank and Singapore Telecommunications among more than 200 clients. Similar to Stripe, Nium's software helps businesses to accept online payments. It also allows businesses to send money and issue physical and virtual credit cards.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":431,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":174260967,"gmtCreate":1627101855759,"gmtModify":1633767930438,"author":{"id":"3581669186334922","authorId":"3581669186334922","name":"Alicialai","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ee2492e1e30217ab640b6c6b67473ac8","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581669186334922","authorIdStr":"3581669186334922"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Please like","listText":"Please like","text":"Please like","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/174260967","repostId":"1109439356","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":459,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":175550532,"gmtCreate":1627043408226,"gmtModify":1633768533282,"author":{"id":"3581669186334922","authorId":"3581669186334922","name":"Alicialai","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ee2492e1e30217ab640b6c6b67473ac8","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581669186334922","authorIdStr":"3581669186334922"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good ","listText":"Good ","text":"Good","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/175550532","repostId":"1147980203","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1147980203","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1627040384,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1147980203?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-07-23 19:39","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Amazon Stock: This Is How Subscriptions Matter","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1147980203","media":"The Street","summary":"Amazon’s subscriptions do not amount to much revenue – probably even less so to profits. But the suc","content":"
\n Amazon’s subscriptions do not amount to much revenue – probably even less so to profits. But the success of the company and the upside to Amazon stock may depend greatly on this business.\n
\n
Amazon (AMZN) -Get Report is well known for its e-commerce and cloud services. But the company has been diversifying its business model in the past several years and gaining scale. For example, the 200 million Prime accountsmeanthat Amazon’s Prime Video has become one of the most widely available streaming services in the world.
\n
But if potential investors were to consider buying Amazon stock today, should they focus their due diligence on Amazon’s “side gigs”, particularly subscriptions? Amazon Prime, Prime Video and others: could they be an important piece of the investment thesis?
\n
A snapshot of Amazon’s businesses
\n
Around 70% of Amazon’s revenues come from e-commerce, broken into two major categories: 1P and 3P. The first consists of sales made by Amazon itself, while the latter pertains to thirty-party vendors that sell their products through Amazon’s marketplace.
\n
Another 12% of Amazon’s revenues come from AWS, the acronym for Amazon Web Service. The segment provides cloud infrastructure services primarily to enterprises and competes with the likes of Microsoft’s Azure.
\n
Aside from physical stores and other minor activities, subscriptions account for only around 7% of Amazon’s total revenues – a drop in the bucket.
\n
Does it matter?
\n
At first glance, even if all of Amazon’s sub revenues were to vanish overnight (not practical, only a thought exercise), the company would still be left with a giant retail and cloud business that grew sales ata dizzying rate of around 40% last quarter. Without subscriptions, Amazon’s Q1 sales would have still increased by a respectable 34% year-over-year -- more so than in any quarter of 2019.
\n
From a number’s perspective, Amazon would probably be fine deemphasizing its subscription businesses to become a pure-play e-commerce and cloud giant. US e-commerce isforecastedto grow 20% by 2025, and Amazon is likely to control a large piece of this expanding market. Worldwide, e-commerce is expected to grow an even better 30%, and Amazon’s footprint expansion opportunities outside North America are substantial.
\n
Think bigger picture
\n
The catch is that subscriptions serve as a hook to attract and retain Amazon customers into its retail ecosystem.
\n
For instance, a Prime subscription brings in no more than $120 per year to Amazon’s coffers. Considering the costly benefits of a Prime account (i.e. fast delivery, access to audio and video content that is expensive to produce), the Seattle-based company probably sees little of the revenue trickling down to earnings.
\n
However, a Prime member is a much better Amazon customer compared to those who do not have a membership. But the success of the company and the upside to Amazon stock may depend greatly on this business.\n\nAmazon (AMZN) -Get Report is well known for its e-commerce and cloud services. But the company has been diversifying its business model in the past several years and gaining scale. For example, the 200 million Prime accountsmeanthat Amazon’s Prime Video has become one of the most widely available streaming services in the world.\nBut if potential investors were to consider buying Amazon stock today, should they focus their due diligence on Amazon’s “side gigs”, particularly subscriptions? Amazon Prime, Prime Video and others: could they be an important piece of the investment thesis?\nA snapshot of Amazon’s businesses\nAround 70% of Amazon’s revenues come from e-commerce, broken into two major categories: 1P and 3P. The first consists of sales made by Amazon itself, while the latter pertains to thirty-party vendors that sell their products through Amazon’s marketplace.\nAnother 12% of Amazon’s revenues come from AWS, the acronym for Amazon Web Service. The segment provides cloud infrastructure services primarily to enterprises and competes with the likes of Microsoft’s Azure.\nAside from physical stores and other minor activities, subscriptions account for only around 7% of Amazon’s total revenues – a drop in the bucket.\nDoes it matter?\nAt first glance, even if all of Amazon’s sub revenues were to vanish overnight (not practical, only a thought exercise), the company would still be left with a giant retail and cloud business that grew sales ata dizzying rate of around 40% last quarter. Without subscriptions, Amazon’s Q1 sales would have still increased by a respectable 34% year-over-year -- more so than in any quarter of 2019.\nFrom a number’s perspective, Amazon would probably be fine deemphasizing its subscription businesses to become a pure-play e-commerce and cloud giant. US e-commerce isforecastedto grow 20% by 2025, and Amazon is likely to control a large piece of this expanding market. Worldwide, e-commerce is expected to grow an even better 30%, and Amazon’s footprint expansion opportunities outside North America are substantial.\nThink bigger picture\nThe catch is that subscriptions serve as a hook to attract and retain Amazon customers into its retail ecosystem.\nFor instance, a Prime subscription brings in no more than $120 per year to Amazon’s coffers. Considering the costly benefits of a Prime account (i.e. fast delivery, access to audio and video content that is expensive to produce), the Seattle-based company probably sees little of the revenue trickling down to earnings.\nHowever, a Prime member is a much better Amazon customer compared to those who do not have a membership. According toForbes, a staggering 96% of all Prime members agree that they are more likely to buy from Amazon than from other e-commerce vendors. See below.\n“Ecosystem” may be an overused term, but it seems to be the path to success that Big Tech companies like Amazon have been carving. While the company’s subscription business is far from being a large revenue generator, it probably contributes greatly, although mostly indirectly, to Amazon’s dominance in e-commerce.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":236,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":176685580,"gmtCreate":1626880236340,"gmtModify":1633770127929,"author":{"id":"3581669186334922","authorId":"3581669186334922","name":"Alicialai","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ee2492e1e30217ab640b6c6b67473ac8","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581669186334922","authorIdStr":"3581669186334922"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good ","listText":"Good ","text":"Good","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":5,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/176685580","repostId":"1107219983","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":392,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":176682174,"gmtCreate":1626880188598,"gmtModify":1633770129439,"author":{"id":"3581669186334922","authorId":"3581669186334922","name":"Alicialai","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ee2492e1e30217ab640b6c6b67473ac8","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581669186334922","authorIdStr":"3581669186334922"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Good","listText":"Good","text":"Good","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/176682174","repostId":"1161684365","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":421,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":176686346,"gmtCreate":1626880140485,"gmtModify":1633770130276,"author":{"id":"3581669186334922","authorId":"3581669186334922","name":"Alicialai","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ee2492e1e30217ab640b6c6b67473ac8","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581669186334922","authorIdStr":"3581669186334922"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Great","listText":"Great","text":"Great","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":1,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/176686346","repostId":"1109369259","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1109369259","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1626876045,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1109369259?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-07-21 22:00","market":"us","language":"en","title":"'Buy The Dip' Investors Pile Into These 6 Stocks For Fast Gains","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1109369259","media":"investors","summary":"S&P 500 investors are bravely buying dipsfollowing sell-offs like never before. Take Dover, a maker of a variety of industrial parts and supplies. Shares were up more than 20% this year up until the sell-off on Monday. The stock then slid to just 1% above its 50-day line. But on Tuesday, it already sprung up more than 3% from the 50-day.\nJust don't assume this buy-the-dip mentality will last forever.Savvy investors know to monitor other key market indicators, too.\n\"While the S&P 500's ability to repeatedly bounce at its 50-day moving average this year has been impressive and even historic, enjoy it while it lasts,\" Bespoke says. \"We can guarantee that it won't last forever.\"\nS&P 500's Bounceback Kids\nAll jumped 3% or more from 50-day moving averages after falling to 1% or less of the support level on Monday","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":359,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"EN","totalScore":0},{"id":176686967,"gmtCreate":1626880116059,"gmtModify":1633770130398,"author":{"id":"3581669186334922","authorId":"3581669186334922","name":"Alicialai","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/ee2492e1e30217ab640b6c6b67473ac8","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"3581669186334922","authorIdStr":"3581669186334922"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Ok","listText":"Ok","text":"Ok","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/176686967","repostId":"1151816705","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1151816705","kind":"news","weMediaInfo":{"introduction":"Providing stock market headlines, business news, financials and earnings ","home_visible":1,"media_name":"Tiger Newspress","id":"1079075236","head_image":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/8274c5b9d4c2852bfb1c4d6ce16c68ba"},"pubTimestamp":1626875217,"share":"https://www.laohu8.com/m/news/1151816705?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-07-21 21:46","market":"fut","language":"en","title":"Energy stocks gain in morning trading","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1151816705","media":"Tiger Newspress","summary":"(July 21) Energy stocks gain in morning trading, Futures of Brent crude oil climbed over 2% to $68.9","content":"
(July 21) Energy stocks gain in morning trading, Futures of Brent crude oil climbed over 2% to $68.98 a barrel.
\n

\n

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html;
