And the stocks of EV-charging network company EVgo(NASDAQ:EVGO)and vehicle electrification company XL Fleet(NYSE:XL)are also on the rise. The stocks had moved as follows as today:

Nio shares up 14.76%

EVgo shares up 9.08%

XL Fleet shares up 7.9%

So what

The thing is, these stocks have very little in common, other than the glaring fact that they all are in the electric vehicle sector. And that tells the story of today's big moves. Though these businesses have not exactly been moving in the same direction, the stock prices have. They are all down significantly in 2021. XL Fleet shares have dropped 59% year to date, while EVgo and Nio stocks are down 37% and 35%, respectively. But the businesses aren't quite as synchronized. Nio's sales are growing quickly, and it announced some exciting plans for next year, including the introduction of its latest EV that it hopes will challenge the Tesla Model 3.

Nio told investors it expects to begin deliveries of the new ET5 in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Now what

Nio is clearly the largest of these stocks, and likely the closest to profitability. With today's move, Nio has a market capitalization of about $52 billion. Compare that to EVgo's valuation of $2.7 billion and XL Fleet at just over $500 million. There's a good reason for that, too.

In addition to Nio's new ET5 coming late next year, it will begin selling its new, larger luxury sedan in March 2022. And beyond the ET5 and larger ET7, Nio has said it plans a third new offering next year. That may come from a collaboration with the largest automotive company in China, but it has yet to be officially announced.

Nio is also continuing to move outside of China as it expands the growth it began in Europe in 2021. EVgo and XL Fleet also have plans to grow, but the results are coming much slower than with Nio. XL Fleet, for example, saw its third-quarter revenue nearly cut in half compared to the third quarter of 2020. XL Fleet converts internal combustion-powered vehicles to plug-in hybrid electric power. It also plans to have a fully electrical conversion solution soon. But as auto manufacturers have struggled to keep up with demand amid supply chain constraints this year, the company hasn't been able to drive the growth it had hoped for.

However, XL Fleet recently announced it has grown its relationship with utility-scale wind and solar power facilities operators for charging infrastructure to support the fleet vehicles it has already provided. It is also in a pilot program with the Department of Defense that it hopes could grow into a large opportunity.

So while Nio and EVgo are growing as EV demand and adoption grows, XL Fleet is struggling at this point. That partially explains the vast disparity in the valuations assigned by investors. But for today, they are all being lumped in the same boat as investors are pushing EV sector names higher moving into the final trading day of the year.

","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Why Nio, EVgo, and XL Fleet Stocks Jumped Today
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nWhy Nio, EVgo, and XL Fleet Stocks Jumped Today\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-12-31 10:07 GMT+8 Motley Fool\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
What happenedOne day after the American depositary shares of Chinese EV maker Nio(NYSE:NIO)hit their lowest level in over a year, the shares are jumping today. Whether it has a meaningful real-world impact within the next five years is still in the air, but companies have begun creating metaverse applications preparing for the inevitable and investors have shown increased interest in related stocks.

As no one knows what the metaverse will hold, the investment opportunities are wide. Selecting metaverse-centric companies can be risky, as most do not have another revenue-producing vertical. The better option right now might be to find stocks like Unity Software(NYSE:U),Match Group(NASDAQ:MTCH), and Autodesk(NASDAQ:ADSK)that have metaverse use cases as well as real-world applications to generate needed revenue to fund their expansions. Let's take a closer look at these three stocks.

1. Unity Software

Without realistic graphics, the metaverse will likely never catch on. Unity Software's 3D animation software creates lifelike representations that have use cases in multiple industries. Its main focus is video games, and it has the tools developers need to monetize and grow the games. Augmented and virtual reality represent huge potential for Unity, and it is already integrated with architectural design software like Autocad's Revit.

In November, Unity acquired Weta Digital, a media company specializing in 3D creation, simulation, and rendering. During Unity's third-quarter conference call, CEO John Riccitiello said, "We plan to offer a cloud-based version of Weta for the millions of consumers who generate content every day on social and gaming platforms and on the web or to use the current vernacular, the metaverse." Unity sees opportunity in the metaverse and is acting to capture significant market share.

Q3 results were solid; revenue increased 43% year over year, and Unity increased the number of customers spending more than $100,000 by 32% to 973. Additionally, it maintained a strong 142% net retention rate, showcasing how much customers are expanding their usage of Unity's offerings.

Management's full-year guidance includes breaking the $1 billion revenue mark. If Unity's metaverse role becomes as big as it thinks, revenue will far surpass this level.

2. Match Group

Online dating has become ingrained in modern society. When someone introduces a significant other or spouse, proclaiming that they met online is far less likely to be derided. While Match Group has improved its dating platforms like Tinder and Hinge by adding video communication and voice samples on a profile, it is still an app with a matching feature, not a real-life simulation.

Shar Dubey, Match's CEO, spoke about a new product called Singletown during Match's Q3 conference call. She described one area as a piano bar setting where people gathered virtually, but an individual played the piano in real life. Instead of yelling over bar noises to get someone's attention, users could click on the profile, adjust the ambient noises, and have a meaningful conversation. This is just one metaverse application Match has tested, but it could become the ultimate dating app if successful.

While new ideas are on the horizon, Match Group reports excellent results. Revenue eclipsed $800 million during Q3, growing at a 25% clip. Its most profitable region, Asia-Pacific (APAC), increased its paying users by 36%. It still has a large capturable demographic located there, as total payers in the Americas were 8.3 million versus 3.3 million in APAC.

After being spun out from IAC/InterActiveCorp(NASDAQ:IAC), its balance sheet was loaded with debt. Match Group is reducing its debt and has proved it by reducing its net leverage ratio from 4.6 times (June 30, 2020) to 3.3 times (Sept. 31, 2021). It does this by channeling its free cash flow generated with a 28% margin to repurchase exchangeable notes.

Match Group is improving its balance sheet, growing rapidly, and displaying exceptional optionality. It is a strong stock pick that will succeed regardless of the metaverse's success.

3. Autodesk

Engineers and architects use Autodesk's flagship products to design buildings and other manufacturable goods. Revit, a building information modeling (BIM) program, allows architects to visualize their designs and showcase them to customers. These creations can be transformed into a virtual reality setting with plugins like Autodesk Rendering. It doesn't take much imagination to understand how these products could be utilized in the metaverse.

A few years ago, Autodesk switched to a subscription pricing model. Since then, revenue has gone straight up.

ADSK REVENUE (TTM) DATA BY YCHARTS.

Companies can no longer buy Autodesk's software and use it until it upgrades. Instead, Autodesk requires an annual license, creating a recurring revenue stream.

This business model has delivered strong results. During Q3, which ended Oct. 31, Autodesk's revenue rose 18% to $1.12 billion, with subscription revenue making up 95% of the total. Margins were also strong, with operating margins of 17% (GAAP) and 32% (non-GAAP). Autodesk also gives investors international exposure.

SOURCE: AUTODESK.

The stock price took a dive after reporting earnings, cratering 15%. The sell-off can be attributed more to what analysts expected than to management guidance, even though Autodesk still projected 15% growth. After the sell-off, Autodesk trades at a 47 price-to-earnings ratio. While it has recovered from its lows, Autodesk is still a strong buy with more growth on the horizon.

Investor takeaway

How large and what the metaverse becomes is only limited by the creator's imagination. Let's take a closer look at these three stocks.IMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.1. Unity SoftwareWithout realistic graphics, the metaverse will likely never catch on. During Unity's third-quarter conference call, CEO John Riccitiello said, \"We plan to offer a cloud-based version of Weta for the millions of consumers who generate content every day on social and gaming platforms and on the web or to use the current vernacular, the metaverse.\" Unity sees opportunity in the metaverse and is acting to capture significant market share.Q3 results were solid; revenue increased 43% year over year, and Unity increased the number of customers spending more than $100,000 by 32% to 973. Additionally, it maintained a strong 142% net retention rate, showcasing how much customers are expanding their usage of Unity's offerings.Management's full-year guidance includes breaking the $1 billion revenue mark. If Unity's metaverse role becomes as big as it thinks, revenue will far surpass this level.2. Match GroupOnline dating has become ingrained in modern society. When someone introduces a significant other or spouse, proclaiming that they met online is far less likely to be derided. While Match Group has improved its dating platforms like Tinder and Hinge by adding video communication and voice samples on a profile, it is still an app with a matching feature, not a real-life simulation.Shar Dubey, Match's CEO, spoke about a new product called Singletown during Match's Q3 conference call. It still has a large capturable demographic located there, as total payers in the Americas were 8.3 million versus 3.3 million in APAC.After being spun out from IAC/InterActiveCorp(NASDAQ:IAC), its balance sheet was loaded with debt. Match Group is reducing its debt and has proved it by reducing its net leverage ratio from 4.6 times (June 30, 2020) to 3.3 times (Sept. 31, 2021). It does this by channeling its free cash flow generated with a 28% margin to repurchase exchangeable notes.Match Group is improving its balance sheet, growing rapidly, and displaying exceptional optionality. It is a strong stock pick that will succeed regardless of the metaverse's success.3. AutodeskEngineers and architects use Autodesk's flagship products to design buildings and other manufacturable goods. Revit, a building information modeling (BIM) program, allows architects to visualize their designs and showcase them to customers. These creations can be transformed into a virtual reality setting with plugins like Autodesk Rendering. It doesn't take much imagination to understand how these products could be utilized in the metaverse.A few years ago, Autodesk switched to a subscription pricing model. Since then, revenue has gone straight up.ADSK REVENUE (TTM) DATA BY YCHARTS.Companies can no longer buy Autodesk's software and use it until it upgrades. Autodesk also gives investors international exposure.SOURCE: AUTODESK.The stock price took a dive after reporting earnings, cratering 15%. The sell-off can be attributed more to what analysts expected than to management guidance, even though Autodesk still projected 15% growth. After the sell-off, Autodesk trades at a 47 price-to-earnings ratio. While it has recovered from its lows, Autodesk is still a strong buy with more growth on the horizon.Investor takeawayHow large and what the metaverse becomes is only limited by the creator's imagination. Fortunately, companies like Unity Software and Autodesk are designing the building blocks needed to enable businesses like Match Group to build their metaverse vision. Even if the metaverse flops, each company will still have a thriving business underneath. Growth investors should consider each stock moving into 2022 and beyond.","news_type":1},"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1158,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":696822151,"gmtCreate":1640666757281,"gmtModify":1640666757448,"author":{"id":"4091976027440070","authorId":"4091976027440070","name":"NeM0ooo","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fc945b6e362666c4cb11d3c9b09018e8","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4091976027440070","authorIdStr":"4091976027440070"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"[Spurting] ","listText":"[Spurting] ","text":"[Spurting]","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":0,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/696822151","repostId":"2194770109","repostType":4,"isVote":1,"tweetType":1,"viewCount":1343,"authorTweetTopStatus":1,"verified":2,"comments":[],"imageCount":0,"langContent":"CN","totalScore":0},{"id":696924156,"gmtCreate":1640605309210,"gmtModify":1640605309379,"author":{"id":"4091976027440070","authorId":"4091976027440070","name":"NeM0ooo","avatar":"https://static.tigerbbs.com/fc945b6e362666c4cb11d3c9b09018e8","crmLevel":1,"crmLevelSwitch":0,"followedFlag":false,"idStr":"4091976027440070","authorIdStr":"4091976027440070"},"themes":[],"htmlText":"Like","listText":"Like","text":"Like","images":[],"top":1,"highlighted":1,"essential":1,"paper":1,"likeSize":2,"commentSize":1,"repostSize":0,"link":"https://laohu8.com/post/696924156","repostId":"1124361710","repostType":4,"repost":{"id":"1124361710","kind":"news","pubTimestamp":1640604546,"share":"https://www.laohunote.com/m/news/1124361710?lang=&edition=full","pubTime":"2021-12-27 19:29","market":"us","language":"en","title":"Blink Charging Has Caught Lightning In A Bottle","url":"https://stock-news.laohu8.com/highlight/detail?id=1124361710","media":"Seeking Alpha","summary":"Summary\n\n2021 was a year EV charging bulls would like to forget.\nBlink continues to make positive op","content":"
Summary
\n
\n
2021 was a year EV charging bulls would like to forget.
\n
Blink continues to make positive operational developments in its business model.
\n
The valuation still seems stretched even after the pullback this year.
\n
\n
Serenethos/iStock Editorial via Getty Images
\n
Blink Charging (BLNK) caught lightning in a bottle in 2021 by maintaining its relatively high market cap despite a collapse of its common shares and against trailing 12-month revenue that stood at just $15.4 million as at the end of its last reported quarter. The company has been able to catch the wave of strong investor enthusiasm over the growing EV economy, leading to a market cap that still stands substantially higher than its pre-pandemic averages even while down more than 50% from its 52-week high.
\n
Data by YCharts
\n
EV charging bulls are spoilt for choice as the now collapsed SPAC explosion saw a plethora of EV charging companies from ChargePoint (CHPT) to Volta (VLTA) and EVgo (EVGO) all go public in 2021. And like Blink, 2021 has turned out to be a relatively uneventful year for these companies as capital heavily moved away from somewhat speculative industries and small-caps to value.
\n
The question of what 2022 now holds lingers. Is it more of the same capital destruction that characterized much of this year as bears would like to believe? This is especially as the FED accelerates the tapering of its bond-buying program to position itself to start raising interest rates as early as March to contain inflation. While the market should be pricing this in already, it could see the capital flight away from companies like Blink continue. This risk is especially heightened with recent financials that fail to justify the current $1.20 billion market cap.
\n
Operational Progress Continues But Revenue Multiple Looks Stretched
\n
Blink last reported quarterly earnings for its fiscal 2021 third quarter which saw revenue come in at $6.4 million. This was a year-over-year increase of 611% and a beat of $1.68 million on consensus estimates. This hypergrowth was partly driven by a rapid increase in charging stations contacted or sold to 3,016, an increase of 351% from its year-ago figure. Services revenues, which consists of charging service revenues, network fees and ride-sharing service revenues, also jumped by 425% year-over-year to $1.38 million. Blink's bulls have justified the company's high valuation on the back of the pace of this growth. The company's management has been seizing the opportunities of the transition to EVs.
\n
This momentum is likely to ramp up next year as demand for EVs continues to grow. This is a long-term structural shift in transportation that will create a substantial tailwind over the next decade. Not often does a company stand to ride such a healthy macro environment, one set to be boosted by both rising consumer sentiment and increasingly positive government action. The latter will see $7.5 billion allocated as part of the infrastructure bill toward building out the US electric vehicle charging network.
\n
Blink has also maintained operational momentum, recently unveiling seven new products including new EV charging equipment. The company will also launch a new network and accompanying mobile app to enhance the charging experience for its customers. And while cash flows from operations were negative at $9 million, the company still ended the quarter with cash and equivalents of $186.7 million. This provides a strong buffer for operational flexibility and expansion in the years ahead as the EV charging space heats up. This is especially as another facet of the bear case has centered around just how competitive and crowded the space is. The has created a dash for prime space as EV chargers in the best locations are likely to perform the best.
\n
However, in spite of the fall of Blink's common shares this year, the company still trades on a price to trailing twelve months revenue multiple of 80x. Bulls would be rights to state that the company will very quickly grow into its multiple if revenue growth in the quarters ahead continues to reflect the rate of growth in the third quarter.
\n
EVs, Charging, And The Future Of Transportation
\n
EVs are undeniably going to play a dominant role in the future of transport and chargers will be required to keep them going. Hence, while 2021 was a terrible year for Blink, the broader long-term macro environment is positive and its conditions are conducive to the prerequisites for shareholder value creation.
\n
There is definitely a race amongst EV charging companies to build out their network as fast as possible to gain scale and seize the leases for the best locations. Hence, I do not expect Blink to chase or even be able to attain cash flow breakeven in the near term. That said, it is hard to recommend Blink as a buy. Yes, the company is growing quickly and has a substantial cash balance to continue to ride the ever-growing EV wave. But the valuation is still steep, and a slowdown would see the common shares experience an even more brutal downward re-rating.
","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n\n\n\n
Blink Charging Has Caught Lightning In A Bottle
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
\nBlink Charging Has Caught Lightning In A Bottle\n
\n\n
\n\n\n2021-12-27 19:29 GMT+8 Seeking Alpha\n\n\n
\n\n
\n
\n
\n
Summary\n\n2021 was a year EV charging bulls would like to forget.\nBlink continues to make positive operational developments in its business model.\nThe valuation still seems stretched even after the ...
\n\nWeb Link\n\n
\n\n\n
\n
\n
\n
\n","type":0,"thumbnail":"","relate_stocks":{"BLNK":"Blink Charging"},"source_url":"https://seekingalpha.com/article/4476811-blink-charging-has-caught-lightning-in-a-bottle","is_english":true,"share_image_url":"https://static.laohu8.com/e9f99090a1c2ed51c021029395664489","article_id":"1124361710","content_text":"Summary\n\n2021 was a year EV charging bulls would like to forget.\nBlink continues to make positive operational developments in its business model.\nThe valuation still seems stretched even after the pullback this year.\n\nSerenethos/iStock Editorial via Getty Images\nBlink Charging (BLNK) caught lightning in a bottle in 2021 by maintaining its relatively high market cap despite a collapse of its common shares and against trailing 12-month revenue that stood at just $15.4 million as at the end of its last reported quarter. Santiago/Getty Images News
\n
Investment Thesis
\n
Rivian Automotive, Inc. (RIVN) recently released its first earnings reports for FQ3'21 as a public company. Notably, the company missed its 1,200 vehicle production target by \"a few hundred vehicles.\" However, we weren't surprised, given the current supply chain bottlenecks and the challenges in ramping production. Moreover, we don't think investors should be unduly concerned about its short-term production goal. Management was clear as it emphasized that its long-term production targets remain unaffected.
\n
Nevertheless, we believe that ramping production successfully will continue to be a key hurdle facing CEO RJ Scaringe & Co. Investors sent the stock tumbling after its earnings report, which we believe the market took the opportunity to pare down risk. After all, RIVN stock had traded at an incredible market cap of $112.8B when we wrote our previous article. Following the recent sell-off, Rivian's market cap has dropped to $88B. Therefore, we believe it's an appropriate time to revisit our thesis on RIVN stock post-FQ3 earnings.
\n
We also discuss why we think the stock seems fairly valued now.
\n
Rivian Market Cap Trend
\n
RIVN market cap analysis (as of 17 December'21).
\n
Readers can quickly glean that Rivian's market cap has dropped dramatically back to where it started life as a public company. It last registered a market cap of $88B, while it began trading with a market cap of $83.6B in early November.
\n
Nevertheless, Rivian's market cap still exceeded Ford (F) and General Motors (GM) market cap even as it just started making deliveries in September. Some investors find it incredulous that a company that hasn't even ramped production could be worth more than both the US auto leaders.
\n
Why We Think Rivian Investors Remain Optimistic Post-FQ3
\n
Rivian's report card wasn't a disaster, even if the company missed its production guidance for 2021. CEO RJ Scaringe offered assurances as he emphasized (edited):
\n
\n For 2021, \n we expect to produce a few hundred vehicles short of our initial 1,200 vehicle production target. We do not believe any of our supply chain challenges represent long-term systemic issues. However, we don't think investors should be overly worried.\nWe discuss why we think RIVN stock is a Buy now.\n\nMichael M. Santiago/Getty Images News\nInvestment Thesis\nRivian Automotive, Inc. Management was clear as it emphasized that its long-term production targets remain unaffected.\nNevertheless, we believe that ramping production successfully will continue to be a key hurdle facing CEO RJ Scaringe & Co. Therefore, we believe it's an appropriate time to revisit our thesis on RIVN stock post-FQ3 earnings.\nWe also discuss why we think the stock seems fairly valued now.\nRivian Market Cap Trend\nRIVN market cap analysis (as of 17 December'21).\nReaders can quickly glean that Rivian's market cap has dropped dramatically back to where it started life as a public company. It last registered a market cap of $88B, while it began trading with a market cap of $83.6B in early November.\nNevertheless, Rivian's market cap still exceeded Ford (F) and General Motors (GM) market cap even as it just started making deliveries in September. Some investors find it incredulous that a company that hasn't even ramped production could be worth more than both the US auto leaders.\nWhy We Think Rivian Investors Remain Optimistic Post-FQ3\nRivian's report card wasn't a disaster, even if the company missed its production guidance for 2021. CEO RJ Scaringe offered assurances as he emphasized (edited):\n\n For 2021, \n we expect to produce a few hundred vehicles short of our initial 1,200 vehicle production target. We do not believe any of our supply chain challenges represent long-term systemic issues. We remain well-positioned to capture and drive the accelerated large-scale adoption of sustainable transportation. However, a small number of suppliers or small number of components may be ramping a little slower, creating constraints or bottlenecks. Those challenges have been really a focal point for us over the last two and a half, three months. \n But, these issues are short-term in nature and they are solvable problems. So, we don't see any long-term systemic challenges associated with ramping the supply chain. (Rivian's FQ3'21 earnings call)\n\nRivian planned production capacity and delivery consensus estimates. After all, penny stocks have prices under $5 per share, so even if you have only a little bit of cash, you should be able to purchase just about any penny stock you're interested in.
\n
The reality, though, is that these stocks are almost always a high-risk investment with a very small chance of a generous return. And there's a better solution now for those without big investment account balances, so there's every reason to swear off penny stocks forever in 2022.
\n
\n
Why you should steer clear of penny stocks
\n
Penny stocks may seem like an affordable way to get started investing in stocks. But the reality is that shares of these companies often cost so little for a good reason.
\n
While some penny stocks are simply unproven companies that haven't yet had a chance to grow, others are used as part of pump and dump schemes by unscrupulous individuals who build up hype around untested companies to drive up the share price. They then sell their shares at a quick profit while leaving later investors holding the bag.
\n
It can be difficult to tell which penny stocks are the diamonds in the rough and which aren't even worth their meager share price, because these low-value stocks aren't sold on stock exchanges and thus aren't as tightly regulated as companies that trade on the New York Stock Exchange or the Nasdaq. After all, penny stocks have prices under $5 per share, so even if you have only a little bit of cash, you should be able to purchase just about any penny stock you're interested in.\nThe reality, though, is that these stocks are almost always a high-risk investment with a very small chance of a generous return. And there's a better solution now for those without big investment account balances, so there's every reason to swear off penny stocks forever in 2022.\nIMAGE SOURCE: GETTY IMAGES.\nWhy you should steer clear of penny stocks\nPenny stocks may seem like an affordable way to get started investing in stocks. But the reality is that shares of these companies often cost so little for a good reason.\nWhile some penny stocks are simply unproven companies that haven't yet had a chance to grow, others are used as part of pump and dump schemes by unscrupulous individuals who build up hype around untested companies to drive up the share price. They then sell their shares at a quick profit while leaving later investors holding the bag.\nIt can be difficult to tell which penny stocks are the diamonds in the rough and which aren't even worth their meager share price, because these low-value stocks aren't sold on stock exchanges and thus aren't as tightly regulated as companies that trade on the New York Stock Exchange or the Nasdaq. They don't have to follow the same reporting requirements, and information about the companies may not be widely available or 100% accurate.\nAnd even in the best-case scenario, when you think you've found a high-quality penny stock, trading it can be difficult because these companies aren't listed on major stock exchanges and there's not as much buyer demand for them.\nThe challenges in researching penny stocks, and buying and selling them, all combine to mean that trading in these assets simply isn't worth it.\nWhat you should invest in instead\nIf you don't have a lot of money to invest, it may be frustrating to hear you should swear off penny stocks, because they may be some of the few shares that seem affordable to you. After all, if you have $10 or $20 that you want to put in the market and most publicly trading companies have a share price that's well above that amount, you may feel closed out of trading equities entirely.\nThe good news is that a small account balance is no longer a reason to invest in penny stocks, because you can buy fractional shares instead.\nFractional shares are available from a growing number of brokerage firms, many of which allow you to buy partial shares of stock regardless of the share price as long as you meet their low minimum purchase requirements.
