forecast as pandemic and manufacturing issues persist

The launch of the latest iPhone brought customers to Apple Inc.’s store on Fifth Ave. in New York in September 2021, and the smartphone manufacturer is expected to report record holiday sales Thursday.

Apple Inc. powered through a pandemic to deliver record holiday and annual sales in 2020, and is expected to push through a supply-chain crisis to beat those records in 2021.

The smartphone giant wasn't immune from a global supply crunch in the December quarter, but executives at Apple $(AAPL)$ said three months ago that they expected sales to grow from last year's record despite those issues, despite not issuing a formal forecast. Analysts also generally aren't sweating the manufacturing issues that drove Apple to its first revenue miss in 12 quarters during the September period.

When the company reports fiscal first-quarter earnings Thursday afternoon, analysts expect Apple's operational strength and buying power as the largest U.S. company will help it hit new sales records for a holiday season and calendar year. Those surveyed by FactSet are calling for $118.9 billion in December-quarter revenue, ahead of the $111.4 billion that Apple recorded a year earlier, which would lead to a record $373.3 billion in sales for the full calendar year, up from $294.1 billion in 2020.

While Apple is expected to survive supply-chain issues, investors will be looking for signs that Apple executives expect to see some relief in 2022, though few expect a formal forecast.

"We expect a focus on any commentary supportive of a belief that the supply chain is improving, continued confidence in strong end-user demand across the portfolio, as well as services/subscriptions momentum," Wells Fargo analyst Aaron Rakers wrote.

It remains to be seen how much good news on earnings could help Apple's stock, though. Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty thinks that the company wasn't as negatively impacted by manufacturing issues as expected, which could allow it to deliver upbeat results and offer guidance for a "relatively in-line March quarter," but she believes that prospect is largely baked into Apple's stock price.

As Apple chases its quarterly-sales record, it remains shy of a market-capitalization milestone. Its stock briefly touched the level required for a $3 trillion valuation in intraday trading earlier this month, but it failed to close at the necessary threshold and has been headed in the wrong direction since.

Shares closed Monday at $161.62; they need to finish above $182.86 for Apple to become the first U.S. company to close with a $3 trillion valuation. That threshold will likely get higher after the earnings report, when Apple will show an updated share count reflective of recent buyback activity.

What to watch for

Earnings: Analysts tracked by FactSet expect that Apple earned $1.89 a share in its fiscal first quarter, higher than the $1.68 a share that it recorded a year earlier. According to Estimize, which crowdsources projections from hedge funds, academics, and others, the average estimate was for $1.96 a share.

Revenue: The FactSet consensus models $118.9 billion in revenue for Apple's December quarter, up from $111.4 billion a year before. The average projection on Estimize is $120.4 billion.

Analysts surveyed by FactSet are looking for $67.6 billion in iPhone revenue, $8.2 billion in iPad revenue, $9.9 billion in Mac revenue, $18.7 billion in services revenue and $14.3 billion in revenue for the wearables, home, and accessories category.

Stock movement: Shares of Apple have declined in the session following each of the company's past five earnings reports. While shares are off about 12% from their intraday high of $182.94 notched earlier in January, they're still up roughly 9% on a three-month basis, outperforming the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500.

Of the 44 analysts tracked by FactSet who cover Apple's stock, 34 have buy-equivalent ratings, eight have hold ratings and two have sell ratings, with an average price target of $178.57.

What analysts are saying

Apple's iPhone story is about more than just the company's supply-chain issues. Just a few months after the company's iPhone 13 launch, analysts are curious about demand for the phones, especially at higher price points and in China.

Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives said that average selling prices for the iPhone are still "very positive," one reason he's upbeat about the current product cycle.

CFRA Research's Angelo Zino is particularly excited about dynamics in China. He expects that the company has been taking share at the high end of the market due to sanction-related pressures on rival Huawei. Apple could also be benefiting in China as smaller players struggle to deal with supply crunches of their own.

"We estimate in China alone there were roughly 15 million iPhone 13 upgrades in the December quarter," Ives added.

Success in the iPhone business might come with some trade-offs, however, according to Zino. He predicts that the company gave priority to the iPhone over the iPad when it came to chip production, since the iPhone represents a more lucrative business.

Apple Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri projected during the last earnings call that the company would notch year-over-year revenue growth in every product category except for iPads in the holiday quarter.

Morgan Stanley's Huberty sees room for Apple to come in ahead of consensus estimates for the services business, fueled in part by a stronger-than-expected performance for the App Store. Overall, she thinks services will show "relative strength" this fiscal year in a positive signal for Apple's margins.

Meanwhile, those expecting a true quarterly outlook from Apple may have to keep waiting. The company hasn't given a traditional financial forecast since the start of the pandemic, and Huberty thinks that the company will once again hold off on providing a numerical range for revenue guidance, instead opting for statements on expected performance relative to recent quarters.

","source":"lsy1603348471595","collect":0,"html":"\n
\n
\n<meta http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" content=\"text/html; After a 27% increase in 2","content":"

The new year looks like it's starting off on the wrong foot for investors. After a 27% increase in 2021, theS&P 500stumbled in January. Tech stocks continue to fall as the world copes with the relentless economic woes of the pandemic. But that doesn't mean there aren't any great investing opportunities. If you have $500 available to invest after paying off any debt and saving for emergencies, there are great options that offer different benefits when the market may not look like it's in growth mode. Consider Costco Wholesale , Realty Income, and PayPal Holdings .

1. Costco Wholesale

Costco stock didn't make a lot of waves last year, but it stillgained more than 50%. That's a lot more than many growth stocks, and once again, it demonstrates the retail behemoth's market power.

Costco's sales have been rising since the pandemic started, but unlike other retailers whose comparable store sales -- or sales at stores open at least a year -- have begun to decelerate as people go back to other kinds of spending, Costco's continue to stay robust.

Costco is among a small number of companies that release monthly reports, and in December, revenue increased 16% while comparable sales rose 14.5%. In the 2022 first fiscal quarter, which ended Nov. 21, revenue increased 17%, and comps increased 15%.

There might be several reasons for Cosco's superior performance. One important and probably temporary catalyst is inflation. As prices rise, consumers tend to shop where they can get the most for their money, and Costco's low prices attract more customers. Costco has also had to raise some prices to account for rising costs due to both inflation and supply chain issues. But there are many reasons to be confident that Costco will keep growing even in a regular economic atmosphere or in any kind of market.

Costco ended fiscal 2021 with an 18% revenue increase to $192 billion. Customers love shopping there because of its low prices, and it typically boasts around a 90% membership retention rate.

Executive memberships are increasing, which cost double the standard membership fee, and the company still has a relatively low store count -- 828 worldwide, with only 572 in the U.S. It opened 20 stores in fiscal 2020 and plans for 27 new stores in 2022.

Wherever the economy turns this year, Costco is likely to be a winner. Shares cost almost $500 these days, but one share can get you far.

2. Realty Income

When the stock market is volatile, there's one thing that can help you get through: dividends. Although, as we saw in 2020, even dividends can stop when the situation calls for it. That's a highly unlikely scenario, though -- most companies have continued their dividends throughout this difficult time. Even if you're not counting on dividends to fund retirement, they can be a great source of income to hedge against unstable market prices for any portfolio.

Realty Income is one of the best dividend stocks on the market. It pays a monthly, growing dividend with a high yield -- 4.3% at the current share price.

The company has increased its dividend 112 times since it went public in 1994 and has paid out 618 consecutive monthly dividends since its founding in 1969. That continued throughout the 2008 crash and all of the smaller corrections over decades.

Realty Income is structured as a real estate investment trust (REIT). It owns properties all over the world, and it's increased its property count from 630 when it went public to more than 10,000 today, including its merger with VEREIT at the end of 2021. It has 650 tenant clients in 60 industries, but its focus on essentials makes it stand out. Its top three clients are7-Eleven,Walgreens, and Dollar General.

Shares cost less than $70, so even if you don't have a lot to invest, you can benefit from owning Realty Income stock.

3. PayPal Holdings

PayPal stock has been on the receiving end of the backlash against tech stocks, and its value has fallen 29% over the past year. It's one of the major companies powering digital payments, and with the shift to online shopping and other forms of cashless payments, PayPal continues to grow in importance and sales.

In 2020, PayPal posted some of its best quarters ever, but it began to slow toward the end of 2021. That was due to tough comps to beat from 2020, its split with eBay,and the general macroeconomic environment. it still posted a 26% year-over-year increase in total payment volume to $310 billion and a 13% revenue increase to $6.8 billion in the third quarter; it's expecting an 18% year-over-year revenue increase for all of 2021.

PayPal isn't anywhere near slowing down. It recently signed a new deal with Amazon for users of it Venmo service to be able to use the app at checkout, and many companies are signing up for QR code checkout. Consider Costco Wholesale , Realty Income, and PayPal Holdings .1. Costco WholesaleCostco stock didn't make a lot of waves last year, but it stillgained more than 50%. That's a lot more than many growth stocks, and once again, it demonstrates the retail behemoth's market power.Costco's sales have been rising since the pandemic started, but unlike other retailers whose comparable store sales -- or sales at stores open at least a year -- have begun to decelerate as people go back to other kinds of spending, Costco's continue to stay robust.Costco is among a small number of companies that release monthly reports, and in December, revenue increased 16% while comparable sales rose 14.5%. In the 2022 first fiscal quarter, which ended Nov. 21, revenue increased 17%, and comps increased 15%.There might be several reasons for Cosco's superior performance. One important and probably temporary catalyst is inflation. As prices rise, consumers tend to shop where they can get the most for their money, and Costco's low prices attract more customers. Costco has also had to raise some prices to account for rising costs due to both inflation and supply chain issues. But there are many reasons to be confident that Costco will keep growing even in a regular economic atmosphere or in any kind of market.Costco ended fiscal 2021 with an 18% revenue increase to $192 billion. Customers love shopping there because of its low prices, and it typically boasts around a 90% membership retention rate.Executive memberships are increasing, which cost double the standard membership fee, and the company still has a relatively low store count -- 828 worldwide, with only 572 in the U.S. It opened 20 stores in fiscal 2020 and plans for 27 new stores in 2022.Wherever the economy turns this year, Costco is likely to be a winner. Shares cost almost $500 these days, but one share can get you far.2. Realty IncomeWhen the stock market is volatile, there's one thing that can help you get through: dividends. Although, as we saw in 2020, even dividends can stop when the situation calls for it. That's a highly unlikely scenario, though -- most companies have continued their dividends throughout this difficult time. Even if you're not counting on dividends to fund retirement, they can be a great source of income to hedge against unstable market prices for any portfolio.Realty Income is one of the best dividend stocks on the market. It pays a monthly, growing dividend with a high yield -- 4.3% at the current share price. The company has increased its dividend 112 times since it went public in 1994 and has paid out 618 consecutive monthly dividends since its founding in 1969. That continued throughout the 2008 crash and all of the smaller corrections over decades.Realty Income is structured as a real estate investment trust (REIT). It owns properties all over the world, and it's increased its property count from 630 when it went public to more than 10,000 today, including its merger with VEREIT at the end of 2021. It has 650 tenant clients in 60 industries, but its focus on essentials makes it stand out. Its top three clients are7-Eleven,Walgreens, and Dollar General.Shares cost less than $70, so even if you don't have a lot to invest, you can benefit from owning Realty Income stock.3. PayPal HoldingsPayPal stock has been on the receiving end of the backlash against tech stocks, and its value has fallen 29% over the past year. It's one of the major companies powering digital payments, and with the shift to online shopping and other forms of cashless payments, PayPal continues to grow in importance and sales. In 2020, PayPal posted some of its best quarters ever, but it began to slow toward the end of 2021. That was due to tough comps to beat from 2020, its split with eBay,and the general macroeconomic environment. it still posted a 26% year-over-year increase in total payment volume to $310 billion and a 13% revenue increase to $6.8 billion in the third quarter; it's expecting an 18% year-over-year revenue increase for all of 2021.PayPal isn't anywhere near slowing down. It recently signed a new deal with Amazon for users of it Venmo service to be able to use the app at checkout, and many companies are signing up for QR code checkout. Digital payments are only going to get stronger, and PayPal has an edge in its size and innovative culture. At the current price of about $170, the shares are trading at 42 times trailing 12-month earnings.

Digital payments are only going to get stronger, and PayPal has an edge in its size and innovative culture.

At the current price of about $170, the shares are trading at 42 times trailing 12-month earnings. Shares took the down escalator after the company reiterated its 2022 revenue guidance of $900-925 million. While investors might have been showing their disappointment the company did not boost its forecast, Oppenheimer’s Colin Rusch sees plenty to back the bull case.“We believe PLUG's strategic update clearly signals the company's maturation,” the 5-star analyst said. “With a balance sheet that still boasts ~$4.5B in cash, a talented management team, a material advantage in hands-on experience, and leading technology, we believe PLUG is executing capably against a large opportunity.”Rusch is particularly pleased with the recent $30 million acquisition of natural gas conversion specialist Joule, which via the savings on the electricity costs for operating its hydrogen liquifiers, appears to pay for itself. It also presents the company with an opportunity to generate $250 million in incremental revenue over the long-term.In fact, by as early as 2023, PLUG expects the “pipeline for electrolyzer capacity” to overtake its traditional material handling business. With the company set on producing 70 tons/day of green hydrogen by the year’s end, in-sourcing H2 procurement is “expected to drive a step-change in fueling margins,” which the Joule acquisition further supports. Not that PLUG is resting on its laurels where the core material handling business is concerned. The company is continuing to grow its core business with the revenue guidance of $600 million for FY22 factoring in three new “pedestal” customers. The figure forms the basis for 2025’s outlook of $1 billion in material handling revenue, amounting to ~4.5% market share.Like other growth-minded names, the stock has had a rough start to 2022 – shares are down 23% so far – but while Rusch concedes that “pressure on high growth names remains in the markets,” the analyst believes PLUG is “continuing to de-risk its business while driving toward sustainable FCF.”Rusch, therefore, stays “bullish,” reiterating an Outperform (i.e., Buy) rating and $63 price target. At current valuation, he sees ~195% one-year upside for the shares. (To watch Rusch’s track record, click here)What does the rest of the Street think? Most tend to agree. Based on 12 Buys vs. 3 Holds, the stock boasts a Strong Buy consensus rating. Going by the $47.8 average price target, shares will appreciate by 107% in the year ahead.
