Among other topics, investors are on the hunt for info on how iPhone 13 sales are going so far, how the company is handling the ongoing component crunch and whether Apple can continue to produce robust growth in its services business.</p>\n<p>As it happens, Apple (ticker: AAPL) analysts have cranked out notes on all three topics.</p>\n<p>J.P. Morgan analyst Samik Chatterjee offered some thoughts on supply chain issues. He writes in a research note that the Street’s focus in recent weeks has been on iPhone 13 supply constraints, citing both disruptions related to a resurgence of Covid-19 cases and the impact on industrial production in China from a shortage of electric power.</p>\n<p>Chatterjee reports that initial iPhone 13 production was delayed by manufacturing related issues with the phone’s camera module, an issue he says implies Apple had more limited inventory heading into the launch compared with past years. And he says the camera module continues to be a primary bottleneck in producing the phones, due largely to headwinds from a Covid outbreak in Vietnam, where the parts are sourced.</p>\n<p>On the China power issue, he says most large assembly companies have seen limited impact from the problem, but that it could affect some smaller component companies. Both issues, he says, bear watching.</p>\n<p>Meanwhile,Morgan Stanley‘s Katy Huberty provides an update on the App Store. She writes in a research note that data from the research firm Sensor Tower suggests that App Store revenue in September grew16.1% from a year ago, the best level in five months, and ahead of her forecast for 12% growth.</p>\n<p>Huberty writes that both App Store revenue specifically and services revenue overall now appear to be running ahead of her forecast model. And she notes that her services estimates for the quarter were already above Street consensus levels. Huberty points out that China gaming revenue accelerated in September despite recent curbs on game play by children under age 18.</p>\n<p>Evercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani observes that lead times for the iPhone 13 remain elevated in most countries, with lead times stretching out for most models. He says lead times in the U.S. for the Pro and Pro Max are running 31 days in the U.S. and 35 days in China, up from a previou estimate of 29 days here and 28 days in China. (As an aside, I would also note that I recently ordered a Pro Max via <a href=\"https://www.marketwatch.com/investing/stock/T?mod=MW_story_quote\" target=\"_blank\">AT&amp;T</a> and received it in well under a week.) In other countries, he says, delivery times are averaging 28 days.</p>\n<p>Daryanani notes that lead times are shorter for the base iPhone 13 and for the iPhone 13 Mini, which he thinks could mean a strong product mix skewed to the higher end models, driving higher margins for the company overall.</p>\n<p>Baird analyst William Power says his checks find that iPhone 13 demand remains strong, supported by a combination of growing consumer interest in 5G and record carrier subsidies – up to $1,000 in trade-in value from&nbsp;AT&amp;T&nbsp;(T),Verizon&nbsp;(VZ), and&nbsp;T-Mobile&nbsp;(TMUS). He sees multiple reasons for the carriers’ aggressive promotions on the new phones.</p>\n<p>He says competition for customers is part of the equation, but also notes that a shift to 5G “should improve customer experience,” while opening up new revenue opportunities. Among other topics, investors are on the hunt for info on how iPhone 13 sales are going so far, how the company is handling the ongoing component crunch and whether Apple can continue to produce robust growth in its services business.\nAs it happens, Apple (ticker: AAPL) analysts have cranked out notes on all three topics.\nJ.P. Morgan analyst Samik Chatterjee offered some thoughts on supply chain issues. He writes in a research note that the Street’s focus in recent weeks has been on iPhone 13 supply constraints, citing both disruptions related to a resurgence of Covid-19 cases and the impact on industrial production in China from a shortage of electric power.\nChatterjee reports that initial iPhone 13 production was delayed by manufacturing related issues with the phone’s camera module, an issue he says implies Apple had more limited inventory heading into the launch compared with past years. And he says the camera module continues to be a primary bottleneck in producing the phones, due largely to headwinds from a Covid outbreak in Vietnam, where the parts are sourced.\nOn the China power issue, he says most large assembly companies have seen limited impact from the problem, but that it could affect some smaller component companies. Both issues, he says, bear watching.\nMeanwhile,Morgan Stanley‘s Katy Huberty provides an update on the App Store. She writes in a research note that data from the research firm Sensor Tower suggests that App Store revenue in September grew16.1% from a year ago, the best level in five months, and ahead of her forecast for 12% growth.\nHuberty writes that both App Store revenue specifically and services revenue overall now appear to be running ahead of her forecast model. And she notes that her services estimates for the quarter were already above Street consensus levels. Huberty points out that China gaming revenue accelerated in September despite recent curbs on game play by children under age 18.\nEvercore ISI analyst Amit Daryanani observes that lead times for the iPhone 13 remain elevated in most countries, with lead times stretching out for most models. He says lead times in the U.S. for the Pro and Pro Max are running 31 days in the U.S. and 35 days in China, up from a previou estimate of 29 days here and 28 days in China. (As an aside, I would also note that I recently ordered a Pro Max via AT&T and received it in well under a week.) In other countries, he says, delivery times are averaging 28 days.\nDaryanani notes that lead times are shorter for the base iPhone 13 and for the iPhone 13 Mini, which he thinks could mean a strong product mix skewed to the higher end models, driving higher margins for the company overall.\nBaird analyst William Power says his checks find that iPhone 13 demand remains strong, supported by a combination of growing consumer interest in 5G and record carrier subsidies – up to $1,000 in trade-in value from AT&T (T),Verizon (VZ), and T-Mobile (TMUS). But its fiscal&nbsp;Q1 showed a loss of $35 million in FCF. This didn’t do anything to help BB stock. If fell from a near-term peak of $15.88 on June 3 (before the June 24 Q1 results) to $9.56 on Aug. 19. The stock could be near a trough now.</p>\n<p>I still believe that&nbsp;as I wrote on June 4, BB stock could be worth $20.91 per share, assuming its FCF turns positive this year. All eyes will therefore be on its upcoming Sept. 22 fiscal Q2 earnings release. Investors will want to see if revenue is growing and the company achieves positive FCF.</p>\n<p>For example, last quarter ending May 31 revenue fell by 15.5% year-over-year (YOY) from $206 million last year to $174 million this quarter. In fact, it was also down by 17.1% from the prior quarter as well.</p>\n<p>That is almost like a curse for a stock like Blackberry. Investors and analysts want to see positive growth on a steady YoY and quarter-over-quarter (QOQ) basis. This probably explains why the stock fell so much.</p>\n<p><b>Where This Leaves BlackBerry</b></p>\n<p>Last year BlackBerry produced $893 million in revenue, but for this fiscal year ending May 2022 analysts still see lower sales at $781.6 million. However, they also expect a recovery by May 2023 to $954.1 million. But is the market willing to wait until then? That is why the upcoming fiscal Q2 2022 earnings release will be so important. Investors want to see if the company is back on a growth track.</p>\n<p>If it is, then the likelihood that it can produce positive free cash flow for the year will increase, and this will help BB stock recover.</p>\n<p>For example, as I pointed out in my last article, BlackBerry reported FCF during Q4 of $49 million. This was a huge 23.33% of its $210 million in revenue during the quarter. Assuming it can pull off the same thing next year the company could make $222.3 million in FCF that year. That is based on 23.33% of sales of $954.1 million.</p>\n<p>However, to be more conservative let’s assume that it can only make half of that or an 11.5% FCF margin. That lowers its forecast FCF to $109.7 million. Moreover, its present value using a 10% discount rate and a year and a half in the future is 86.68% times this FCF number. That lowers it to $95.1 million.</p>\n<p><b>What BlackBerry Stock Could Be Worth</b></p>\n<p>If we use an FCF yield of between 1% we can calculate the company’s ongoing value. This is calculated by dividing the free cash flow estimates by its FCF yield ratio.</p>\n<p>For example, using $95.1 million in FCF forecast for Blackberry in 2023 brings its value to $9.51 billion. This is 55.7% over today’s market value for Blackberry of $6.109 billion.</p>\n<p>And if we use a 1.5% FCF yield, the target market value falls to $6.34 billion (i.e., $95.1/0.015=$6.34b). That is just 3.78% over today’s price.</p>\n<p>Therefore, BB stock has a target value between 3.78% and 55.7% over today’s price. The average is 29.74%, or basically 30% over today’s price of $10.73. That puts its value at $13.95 per share (estimate rounded to $14).</p>\n<p><b>What to do With BB Stock</b></p>\n<p>Analysts are not very positive about BB stock. For example, seven analysts surveyed by Refinitiv (reported by&nbsp;<i>Yahoo! Finance</i>) have an average target price of $8.36. That implies a potential drop of 22% from today’s price.</p>\n<p>Another survey by&nbsp;<i>TipRanks.com</i>&nbsp;says that four analysts have an&nbsp;average price of $9.50or 11.5% below today’s price. However, nine Wall Street analysts surveyed by&nbsp;<i>Seeking Alpha</i>&nbsp;have an&nbsp;average target of $8.19, or 23.7% below today.</p>\n<p>So the average of all three of these surveys is a price of $8.68, or 19% lower. I would not be too bothered by this though. But its fiscal Q1 showed a loss of $35 million in FCF. This didn’t do anything to help BB stock. If fell from a near-term peak of $15.88 on June 3 (before the June 24 Q1 results) to $9.56 on Aug. 19. The stock could be near a trough now.\nI still believe that as I wrote on June 4, BB stock could be worth $20.91 per share, assuming its FCF turns positive this year. All eyes will therefore be on its upcoming Sept. 22 fiscal Q2 earnings release. Investors will want to see if revenue is growing and the company achieves positive FCF.\nFor example, last quarter ending May 31 revenue fell by 15.5% year-over-year (YOY) from $206 million last year to $174 million this quarter. In fact, it was also down by 17.1% from the prior quarter as well.\nThat is almost like a curse for a stock like Blackberry. Investors and analysts want to see positive growth on a steady YoY and quarter-over-quarter (QOQ) basis. This probably explains why the stock fell so much.\nWhere This Leaves BlackBerry\nLast year BlackBerry produced $893 million in revenue, but for this fiscal year ending May 2022 analysts still see lower sales at $781.6 million. However, they also expect a recovery by May 2023 to $954.1 million. But is the market willing to wait until then? That is why the upcoming fiscal Q2 2022 earnings release will be so important. Investors want to see if the company is back on a growth track.\nIf it is, then the likelihood that it can produce positive free cash flow for the year will increase, and this will help BB stock recover.\nFor example, as I pointed out in my last article, BlackBerry reported FCF during Q4 of $49 million. This was a huge 23.33% of its $210 million in revenue during the quarter. Assuming it can pull off the same thing next year the company could make $222.3 million in FCF that year. That is based on 23.33% of sales of $954.1 million.\nHowever, to be more conservative let’s assume that it can only make half of that or an 11.5% FCF margin. That lowers its forecast FCF to $109.7 million. Moreover, its present value using a 10% discount rate and a year and a half in the future is 86.68% times this FCF number. That lowers it to $95.1 million.\nWhat BlackBerry Stock Could Be Worth\nIf we use an FCF yield of between 1% we can calculate the company’s ongoing value. This is calculated by dividing the free cash flow estimates by its FCF yield ratio.\nFor example, using $95.1 million in FCF forecast for Blackberry in 2023 brings its value to $9.51 billion. This is 55.7% over today’s market value for Blackberry of $6.109 billion.\nAnd if we use a 1.5% FCF yield, the target market value falls to $6.34 billion (i.e., $95.1/0.015=$6.34b). That is just 3.78% over today’s price.\nTherefore, BB stock has a target value between 3.78% and 55.7% over today’s price. The average is 29.74%, or basically 30% over today’s price of $10.73. That puts its value at $13.95 per share (estimate rounded to $14).\nWhat to do With BB Stock\nAnalysts are not very positive about BB stock. For example, seven analysts surveyed by Refinitiv (reported by Yahoo! Finance) have an average target price of $8.36. That implies a potential drop of 22% from today’s price.\nAnother survey by TipRanks.com says that four analysts have an average price of $9.50or 11.5% below today’s price. However, nine Wall Street analysts surveyed by Seeking Alpha have an average target of $8.19, or 23.7% below today.\nSo the average of all three of these surveys is a price of $8.68, or 19% lower. I would not be too bothered by this though.
